"In deciding upon a name for their county, these early settlers went outside of their own State and elected to choose Lowndes, in honor of William Jones Lowndes, one of the distinguished sons of South Carolina. William Jones Lowndes was the son of Rawlings Lowndes, who was a leader in the affairs of South Carolina during and after the Revolutionary War. The man for whom Lowndes County was named was noted as a learned scholar and for his mildness of disposition. He was not vigorous in health and was forced to decline the honor of having his name placed before the people as a candidate for the presidency of the United States at the time of the election of James Monroe for the second term." Hi Lowndes Co Researchers I am new to the list ... just found (possibly) my Hightower ancestors there. I would appreciate any information on the early Hightowers in Lowndes 1790-1850 or their descendants. Here is the theory I am working with .... John B Hightower b 1774, son of Thomas Hightower, migrated to Tattnall Co GA about 1800. His brother Henry did the same. They moved to Lowndes Co 1828. John B. Hightower's first wife may have been Mary Guess and he had four children with her. My theory is that some time between 1810 and 1818 he remarried (wifes name unknown), and with this wife he had the following family: Descendants of Unknown Hightower [possibly John B. Hightower b 1774] 1 Unknown Hightower b: Bet. 1759 - 1803 VA . +UnknownF Unknown b: Bet. 1789 - 1803 GA .... 2 Nancy Hightower b: May 11, 1818 d: March 20, 1891 ........ +Unknown Robinson b: Bet. 1788 - 1838 .... 2 James M. W. Hightower b: November 01, 1819 d: September 1860 ........ +M. P. Unknown m: March 03, 1859 .... 2 Susannah Hightower b: November 17, 1821 .... 2 Mary Hightower b: August 22, 1823 d: July 12, 1847 .... 2 Martha Hightower b: August 22, 1825 GA d: March 18, 1881 ........ +George Washington Payne b: August 18, 1834 Talbotton?, Talbot Co, GA d: April 24, 1906 Columbus Co?, GA m: December 17, 1857 Talbot Co, GA .... 2 Wilmouth Hightower b: July 04, 1827 d: December 1834 .... 2 Elizabeth Jane Hightower b: January 14, 1830 .... 2 John W. Hightower b: July 18, 1832 d: May 13, 1835 .... 2 Green A. Hightower b: November 15, 1834 This is the family of my ancestor Martha Hightower and is from a family bible. What I am trying to do is find her parents .... and John B. Hightower b 1774 looks very likely. His census records in 1830 and 1840 in Lowndes match this family very well. I have more information that I will be glad to share but this is the basics. If anyone has any information or ideas about these people I would greatly appreciate hearing from them. Thanks David Hamill Durham, NC
