Thought I would pass this along to let you know the high level of dedication and/or insanity the folks at rootsweb have in keeping their service up. Don't you wish the folks at your local ISP were this committed to service? The friendly folks at Rootsweb have warned us that they may soon be going down. High winds and snow have knocked out their power and they are running out of battery life. This list, all other rootsweb lists, and their site may be going down for awhile. Please be patient - it will all melt eventually. Shouldn't effect me too much. Here in Western NC we are due for a minor blizzard any time now, so I should be without power, too. Maybe I can catch up on some old fashioned filing. -- Linda Hoxit Raxter lraxter@citcom.net See Indexed Western North Carolina Cemetery Surveys http://www.geocities.com/~alextreehouse related to at least half the county - at least once ; )
Since I don't feel like I spend enough quality time with my computer, I have started a companion project to my cemetery research - Extracting the Transylvania County, NC Death Certificates. In the first batch I actaully found that about 50% don't have a listing in the Monteith Cemetery Survey of the County (10-20 years out of date). Anyway - found a couple of Galloway descendents: Infant TINSLEY b. 26APR1914 d. 26APR1914 male Father: Oliver TINSLEY b. Brevard; Mother: Lora GALLOWAY b. Lk Toxaway cause - premature infant no burial place listed Vol 1 pg 12 (they messed up the form - looks like Dad was a logger w/ common school education) Sarah Jane BAGWELL b. 17AUG1863 Trans. Sophia was born ca 1801 and died 1892 was was the dtr of John & Kizza Galloway She married Enoch Rees Surprise - Sophia was Enoch's SECOND wife. Today I visited Elizabeth Barton (oral history source) and she just happened to mention Enoch had a first wife like everyone knew it (well I didn't). She has never been able to find any documentation about the first wife. But considering the time period and the fact that they lived on the NC/SC line that is not surprising. -- Linda Hoxit Raxter lraxter@citcom.net See Indexed Western North Carolina Cemetery Surveys http://www.geocities.com/~alextreehouse related to at least half the county - at least once ; )

Marty Grant's super web page busted one of my Brick Walls (PATTERSON). Hooray! Per Sherry Osburne --- I believe there are two William Henry Galloways. My great grandfather was probably the second William Henry, born about 1849. Sherry has a wonderful site which lists this line and the sources she used ! At: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/6370/index.html Thanks for the information ! Confirmation is important ! William Frazier Galloway was listed various Census records as being in Habersham; then in Gilmer; then in Fannin Co. It is possible he moved very little as Habersham was created in 1818 out of Cherokee lands; Gilmer was created in 1832 out of Cherokee; Fannin was created in 1854 out of Gilmer and Union. Galloway, GA is not a town or a post office any more. But, Galloway Cemetery is located off Galloway Road in Fannin County, GA where William Fraizer and Levise are buried. Hope this helps someone. Looking for the father of William Henry Galloway. His father may have been William Frazier Galloway from Translyvania Co NC. William Henry settled in Fannin Co GA and later Union Co GA. Any information on the William Frazier line would be greatly appreciated. Michelle Mason
A friend who has this cd sent me this information, from the index: Family Tree Maker's Family History - Virginia Genealogies #2 1600's-1800's: DAVID & MARGARET GALLOWAY were two of the sponsors of MARGARET BLAIR ASHTON who was born 23 September 1779. GOERGE & MARY MAINES had son LEVI MAINS about 1829, and one of their children was a VINA who married JOHN GALLOWAY and had the following children: George, William, Daniel, Jasper and others (GALLOWAY children), it did not mention who the others were. JOSEPH & SAMUEL GALLOWAY were witnesses to a land transaction (stated in will) of BENJAMIN TASKER, Benjamin's will was dated February 1766 and proven in 1768 - the will indicated some sort of land transaction to be made and Joseph and Samuel were witness to this. DAVID & MARGARET GALLOWAY were two of the sponsors of SARAH KEENE ASHTON who was born 23 Sept 1779. -- Sherry in Georgia osburn@bellsouth.net Genealogy - a search for the greatest treasures - our ancestors Sherry's Genealogy Home Page - Our Georgia Families: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/6370/index.html Dryman Family Page: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/6370/dryman.html Gilmer County USGENWEBPage: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/6370/gilmer.html Seminole County USGENWEB Page: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/6370/seminole.html Webster County USGENWEB Page: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/6370/webster.html
According to Ron Dean Galloway; on his Familytreemaker web page; the parents of William Galloway was John And Mary Harrison Galloway of Northumberland, PA. Harriett Essary was from Orange Co., VA and they married abt. 1783. I personally have not heard from Ron Galloway so I do not know his sources nor the accuracy of this information, but every clue helps. Something to contemplate. William Galloway (b ca 1763) had wives Sarah USSARY and Hannah POWELL. Where did Sarah come from - genetically and geographically? There is a Thomas Ussary listed as having 9 white folks in his household in the 1804 Walton County, GS census (Current Transylvania/Henderson County NC). Since William settled here in about 1796 (according to Bible records), and he was having children by 1790: 1. Did he come here with his in-laws? 2. Did he have an earlier wife who died and then met Sarah here? 3. Is Thomas Ussary completely unrelated to Sarah and simply moved here to confuse me? Any thoughts? -- Linda Hoxit Raxter lraxter@citcom.net See Indexed Western North Carolina Cemetery Surveys http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Forum/7150 related to at least half the county - at least once ; )
