Hello Clarence, We are not ignoring you. It's just the great weather outside that keeps everyone off the computer until dark. There are 3 Galloway related pages that I know and probably many more (I'm kinda new too) Sherry Osburn, Linda Raxter, and Shawna Hall Judy, do you have a page anywhere? All of these are accessible through Sherry's Galloway page. AND I found many, many more that on other lines of Galloway families that could help you out. I know that some people probably have responded to you personally but, all of us would like to have the chance to dust of our records and look for your people. So, go ahead and post what you have to the list so we can all check and see if have a new cousin.... Include names, dates, and places(if you have them) and we will be more than happy to help out. Let me know if I can help with those other Galloway families. Donny A. in Dallas,GA
Found a great Galloway site and forgot to bookmark it: a two-part coverage of the 7 brothers and their descendants, settling near Boone in Kentucky, wheeling and dealing with the Cherokees, etc. Probably, this was a link from Shawna, Sherry, or Linda's sites, yet I can''t find it. Can anybody point me to it? Thanks in advance, Gordon Owen
Was wondering if there are other GALLOWAY webpages out there besides Sherry Osborn's?? Would like to check them out for possible connections to the GALLOWAY line I am researching. Clarence Lott

Does anyone know which particular J.A. Galloway was serving as Justice of the Peace for Wolf Mountain in Jackson County, NC around 1873? He married my gg grandparents, James Hoxit & Evaline Owen at her Father's House on Wolf Mountain June 5, 1873. -- Linda Hoxit Raxter lraxter@citcom.net See Indexed Western North Carolina Cemetery Surveys http://www.geocities.com/~alextreehouse related to at least half the county - at least once ; )
Elizabeth Barton has been so helpful to me in my research I hate to zap some of her findings but.... She once came to the conclusion that 2 of William Galloway's Sons (the first NC/SC problem William born about 1764), John C & James, were among the first graduating class at Carson College. Judy Ballard had sent me a note once suggesting a college education didn't match the literacy level of their children. Well a simple check of the college web site revealed: "Local citizens invested their own labor and money to found this college. On December 5, 1851, Mossy Creek Baptist Seminary was chartered to offer educational opportunities to the Baptists of this region." 1851 is pretty late for the brothers to go to college. Elizabeth gets her information from somewhere, and John C. , a Baptist minister, did also have sons named John & James so maybe they were the college grads. Of course John & James are not exactly uncommon names in the Galloway, or any other family, and KY is close to Carson Newmann College in TN as well. Any thoughts???? -- Linda Hoxit Raxter lraxter@citcom.net See Indexed Western North Carolina Cemetery Surveys http://www.geocities.com/~alextreehouse related to at least half the county - at least once ; )
This came over the Mauldin list and I've written to the submitter to see if there is more information, someone had prepared a genealogy for a niece's graduation from high school and this was included in it: "I find in upper South Carolina 4 different families of Mauldins. They are all kin, and yet I haven't found the common ancestor. the furtherest back authentic ancestor I find is : Joab Mauldin and wife Sarah (Me: I think they ment John here) who lived near Carswell Institute on a branch of Rocky River. In 1785 William Moultrie deeded to John 320 acres on Governors Creek, a branch of Rocky River, and in 1787, 100 more acres. John was a blacksmith and made swords for the Revolutionary soldiers. We do not know his wife's maiden name nor how many children they had. There was an Able, a John Jr, and Joab, and there were three daughters, Winifred, Frances and Keziah. Winifred married Robert Norris Frances married Burgess Reeves Keziah married a Galloway and moved to Buncomb Co NC" -- Sherry in Georgia osburn@bellsouth.net Genealogy - a search for the greatest treasures - our ancestors Sherry's Genealogy Home Page - Our Georgia Families: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/6370/index.html Gilmer County, Georgia USGENWEBPage: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/6370/gilmer.html Seminole County, Georgia USGENWEB Page: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/6370/seminole.html Walker County, Georgia USGENWEB Page: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/6370/walker.html Webster County, Georgia USGENWEB Page: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/6370/webster.html
Hello, In going through my Galloway folder, I found several pages that seem to have come from a personal/privately published genealogy of the Galloway family that a fellow researcher had shared with me. I **believe** it is the basis for the story about the 7 Galloway brothers included in the Fannin County articles. But there is not a definite connection shown between these brothers or William or John in NC. Because I don't know who the author of the work was or if it was copy righted and because of the length, I will not send it to the list, but have put it on my Galloway page (linked from first url in my signature) as a private page. In other words without this url, you won't be able to find it. It was long enough to be broken down into two parts. So for your reading pleasure visit: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/6370/article.html the second part is linked from the first. Be sure and visit my Galloway page, when you have the time, I have information about the families of John and Kizzia Galloway online with seperate pages for Judy Ballard's Sophia Galloway and for Elisabeth Spicer's Caroline Galloway. But there is hope. I have seen an article in "Heritage of Transylvania County" based on oral tradition which says "The Galloways were some of the first settlers on the upper French Broad. Some were there at least fifty years before the Revolutionary War." So you're not the only one who has heard early NC/SC Galloway rumors. But oral history can sometimes be a little foggy on the details. It more likely that Galloways were just here for hunting trips. The earliest formal attempt to settle this are was a group from SC in the 1780's or so. And SC revoked their land grants the next year and turned the whole are over to the Federal government since it was so uncivilized. His participation in this attempt is possible, but I can't find any sort of a list of the folks who moved in. They formed a development corporation, so I assume legal papers were created somewhere. This was very much "Indian territory" at that time - even says so on the old maps. There is a John Galloway listed as Head of House in the 1779 Old 96th Dist. of SC census. Does anyone know anything about this John? If I run into any braided Galloways I'll grab them for you. -- Linda Hoxit Raxter lraxter@citcom.net See Indexed Western North Carolina Cemetery Surveys http://www.geocities.com/~alextreehouse related to at least half the county - at least once ; )
I received this on the Virginia list. Though it interesting since there might be some Indian ancestry in a line or two here and there... Somewhere in the minutes of East Fork Baptist Church, there was a church "discussion" on the marital status of William Galloway and Hannah Powell. There is also a court case in Henderson County on same. Several years ago I searched the basement of the Henderson Co. Courthouse and obtained a copy of what little records that remained. The final verdict was that Hannah and William were not guilty because they were married. According to my research, Robert Galloway was their only child. The 3 other children listed were Powell children who belonged to Hannah. Was Hannah married to a Powell? Or was she a poor Miss Powell who couldn't afford a husband all her own? Well, they're expecting 4 inches of rain before noon tomorrow, so I guess I won't be finishing up that cemetery. Back to the Galloways. In my previous post, I suggested that Williams was polite enough to wait until the departure of his first wife, Sarah, to marry his second wife, Hannah. Found a little Galloway notebook by one of Robert's descendents (Bill Galloway in Mt Holly) He says that William Galloway's father was a William Galloway b. in Scotland bef 1746. No sources listed - I'm going to write him and ask for more details. He also has some more kids for second wife Hannah Powell: 1. Arch Galloway b. 1832 2. Thomas Galloway b. 1839 3. Sally Galloway b. 1840 4. Robert Galloway b. Hi Everyone, OK, I'm certainly confused, I thought Sarah Essary/Ussary didn't die until about 1845 and that he married Hannah Powell abt 1846. Could she have been married before and those where children by her first marriage? And they just took the Galloway name? What about those 7 Galloway brothers mentioned in the Fannin County articles? One of them was William and they were to have supposed to have come here from Scotland abt 1777 (I think that's the right yr) which would have made him mid 30's or so. Both articles never quite made the connection between William Frazier Galloway or William Galloway and those brothers but it was implied. I for one would certainly like to attach them to someone. Well, gotta get back to adding size demensions to the graphics on my web pages, I didn't they were so important or that I had so many! Talk with all of you later!
