    3. Perhaps she misread it?Please do not tell me they are revising his history also. Or is it a fact that has been previously not know and Wikipedia has not picked it up yet?? Can your cousin call them to verify this fact? >From Wikipedia: Jefferson Davis: Davis was the youngest of the 10 children of Samuel Emory Davis (Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, 1756 - July 4, 1824) and wife (married 1783) Jane Cook (Christian County, (later Todd County), Kentucky, 1759 - October 3, 1845), daughter of William Cook and wife Sarah Simpson, daughter of Samuel Simpson (1706 - 1791) and wife Hannah (b. 1710). The younger Davis's grandfather, Evan Davis (Cardiff, County Glamorgan, 1729 - 1758), emigrated from Wales and had once lived in Virginia and Maryland, marrying Lydia Emory. His father, along with his uncles, had served in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War; three of his older brothers served during the War of 1812. During Davis's youth, the family moved twice; in 1811 to St. Mary Parish, Louisiana and in 1812 to Wilkinson County, Mississippi. In 1813 Davis began his education at the Wilkinson Academy, near the family plantation in the small town of Woodville. Two years later, Davis entered the Catholic school of Saint Thomas at St. Rose Priory, a school operated by the Dominican Order in Washington County, Kentucky. At the time, he was the only Protestant student. Davis went on to Jefferson College at Washington, Mississippi, in 1818, and to Transylvania University at Lexington, Kentucky, in 1821. In 1824 Davis entered the United States Military Academy (West Point).[5] From: galincol-bounces@rootsweb.com <http://us.mc1803.mail.yahoo.com/mc/compose?to=galincol-bounces@rootsweb.com > [mailto:galincol-bounces@rootsweb.com <http://us.mc1803.mail.yahoo.com/mc/compose?to=galincol-bounces@rootsweb.com > ] On Behalf Of gc-gateway@rootsweb.com <http://us.mc1803.mail.yahoo.com/mc/compose?to=gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, July 30, 2010 7:31 PM To: GALINCOL-L@rootsweb.com <http://us.mc1803.mail.yahoo.com/mc/compose?to=GALINCOL-L@rootsweb.com> Subject: [GALINCOL] Jefferson Davis family This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. I found a Samuel Davis who paid taxes in lincoln County in 1800, 1801 and 1802 but a biography of Jefferson Davis I found on the Internet stated that Samuel moved to KY about 1797??? Thanks.

    3. OK, I'm really confused now. Evidently, there was a Samuel Davis who lived in Wilkes County in the late 1700's and one who lived in Lincoln Count in the same time period. I found the following in "Roster of Revolutionary Soldiers in Georgia": Evan Davis of Georgia. Evan Davis, b. Wales, emigrated from Wales to American (Philadelphia, Penn.) and then settled in Va., but came later to the new lands in Ga., and settled near Savannah. He resided there until the close of the Rev. War, in which he took an active part, serving in the Ga. Cavalry, under County Pulaski.---Evan Davis mar. in S.C. Mary (Emory) Williams. Their son, Samuel Davis, b. Ga., was a Rev. Sol. Of Ga. He mar. Jane Cook in Ga., and they were the parents of Jefferson Davis (10th child), b. in Christian (now Todd) Co., Ky., June 3, 1808" etc. There was a Samuel Davis and wife Jane living in Wilkes County in 1788 according to "Early Records of Georgia" Wilkes County: Page 169--"DAVIS, SAMUEL and wife Jane to Stephen Gafford 200 acres on Little river. Jan. 2, 1788. John Pinkston, John Black, Benjamin Thompson, Test." The 1850 and 1860 census records for Warren County, Mississippi state that Joseph Davis (Joseph was the first born son of Samuel and Jane Davis) was born in Georgia in 1785. There is a Samuel Davis who paid taxes as stated before and also a Mary Davis who paid taxes beginning in 1786 in Wilkes County in an area which was later Lincoln County. I have other information on this Davis family of Wilkes/Lincoln County if anyone is interested. Who knows where Jefferson Davis' parents were from in GA, but I think it's an interesting tid bit of history.
