Yes, I am still here, but I have no new information except if I have not previously posted about access to the Augusta, GA newspaper online. I believe we could safely assume that Lincoln was one of the very early "pass through" counties in Georgia. As the land further south and west in GA and then AL was taken from the Indians, the hearty ones removed to these places. The Augusta Chronicle has online newspapers for a fee back to 1792. It is slow going but wonderful reading. I am in no way associated with this paper. But I do read some of their current news via a paid-for program that does newspaper highlights for the state of GA that comes to your computer five days a week for a fee of $60 per year. The Augusta Chronicle has great editorials. How great to have a newspaper that is still publishing since 1792. If it was ever called anything else I am not aware of it. The old newspapers make wonderful reading. If you know the approximate date of i.e. the death of an ancestor, you may not find it until months later so be careful and not put too much credence in a weekly date. But I promise you will enjoy your search. Lincoln County has excellent court house records. How fortunate we are that it has never burned, however I am aware that some loose papers, etc. were trashed during a renovation a few years ago. It is so sad that everyone in our country does not realize the importance of loose papers but they don't. "The Augusta Chronicle" in it's earlier days was "The Augusta Sentinel" and, Betty, you are so right about it being a wonderful resource for those of us who have ancestors who were Georgia in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Since this newspaper was the "legal" newspaper it published legal notices from not only Richmond County (Augusta) but from surrounding counties as well. I've found many ads and legal notices for Lincoln County. Anyone who hasn't visited the genealogy room at the Lincoln County Library should if they get a chance, it's an invaluable source of information and very user friendly. -----Original Message----- From: galincol-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:galincol-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Betty Bivins Sent: Monday, April 05, 2010 9:20 AM To: galincol@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [GALINCOL] Test-reply Yes, I am still here, but I have no new information except if I have not previously posted about access to the Augusta, GA newspaper online.
