After the Revolution Augusta became the temporary capital of the new state of Georgia between 1786 and 1795, and many of the leaders of the government moved to the town. One of the most notable was George Walton, a Signer of the Declaration of Independence, who built his home, Meadow Garden <http://www.nps.gov/nr//travel/Augusta/meadowgarden.html>, on what was then the outskirts of town. Walton held many important offices, including Governor and Judge. Walton Way, named in his honor, is the main artery through the Summerville Historic District <http://www.nps.gov/nr//travel/Augusta/summervillehd.html>, a suburban village originally laid out by Walton in the 1790s. --- Antivirus: Outbound message clean. Trying to look at Wilkes before there was Lincoln County, I came upon a man named McGinty that had information about tax lists. I had found a drawn image of plats that shows John Querns in the middle of many prosperous land owners that were in Wilkes on a website called "hiddenancestors" Mr. McGinty suggested I try to find Paul Graham and said that Mr. Graham had drawn something out about plats for Lincoln County. So, I am looking for Mr. Graham to see if he has detail on Soap Creek families 1794-1800 on plats. Walter L. Cullars --- Antivirus: Outbound message clean. She testified that she knew they were married when Achsah applied for a pension on John's RS service. I think Mary and Achsah had several sibs but have never been able to prove them. Mary was living with one of her children in Autauga Co AL when she died but I have no death date or burial for her. The Lewis family in Fauquier Co VA are hard to sort out because there were huge numbers of Lewis families in that area. Father James Lewis apparently married twice - once a Mary and then a Rachel. http://www.lincolnjournalonline.com/news/2008/1211/Front_Page/003.html McCrimmon publishes second book John Cullars McCrimmon is shown presenting a copy of his latest book, "Memoirs and Records of John Cullars McCrimmon," to Shirley Dawkins, director of the Lincoln County Library. "This book will be a great asset to the library's genealogy department," said Dawkins. Copies of the book cost $25 each, with all proceeds going to the library. One of the newest additions to the Lincoln County Library is a book titled "Memoirs and Records of John Cullars McCrimmon," published recently by the author. Another chapter is devoted to McCrimmon's ancestry. All of his maternal ancestors settled in Lincoln County in the 1700s; whereas, his paternal ancestors, who were of Scottish descent, came to North Carolina in the 1700s and later migrated to Georgia around 1800. The author is the great-great-great grandson of Matthew Cullars, Sr. and Thomas Glaze, Sr. The two Revolutionary War veterans, who came to Lincolnton following the war, were farmers and large landowners. In fact, when Cullars died in 1841, he owned land in six Georgia counties. Also in the genealogy chapter, McCrimmon included the marriage announcement of his great-greatgrandparents, George W. McCrimmon and Katherine McLeod, whose wedding took place on September 8, 1841. In addition, the book features a copy of the death certificate of McCrimmon's great grandfather, John Angus McCrimmon, who died in 1927 of "old age." He was 87. J.A. McCrimmon fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War. He was captured in 1864 and held prisoner until the end of the war. Other McCrimmon men serving in the Confederate Army included Angus McCrimmon, who was wounded at Fredericksburg in 1862; Duncan W. McCrimmon, who was among those who laid down their arms and surrendered to the Union Forces at Appomattox; and Furquhard McCrimmon, who was killed at Gettysburg. All of these men were natives of Montgomery County or Telfair County in Georgia; whereas, Houston Glaze, another of the author's great-grandfathers, enlisted in the army in Lincoln County on July 14, 1861. McCrimmon's book of memoirs also contains a chapter dealing with the killings of his uncles, Frank Cullars and Wayne Cullars, on July 4, 1923, by the sheriff of Lincoln County. Eight pages are devoted to this incident, which many citizens have described as one of the most deplorable and tragic events to ever occur in the county. The last chapter of the book is titled "Odds and Ends" and includes a photograph of McCrimmon and his sister, Margueritte McCrimmon Coffield, taken in the 1920s at the home of their grandmother, Fannie Glaze Cullars; a letter from Senator Herman Talmadge, dated July 5, 1968, regarding gun control; obituaries of family members; and so forth. In all, the book contains 35 pages of photographs. It features photographs of various family members; of the dedication of the McCrimmon- Cullars Computer Lab and the John Cullars McCrimmon Genealogy Room at the library; and of the housewarming for the new Cullars House, which burned in 2003 and was rebuilt in 2005. Located in the Goshen Community, the historic home was built in the 1700s by Stern Simmons, Sr., a Revolutionary War veteran. It has been owned by John B. Cullars and his descendants since 1900. Photographs from the three wars that McCrimmon served in are likewise reproduced in the book. On the introductory page, the master sergeant wrote: "In closing, I would like to borrow a line from the 5th Regimental Combat Team (RCT) that I served with during the Korean War. The motto of the 5th RCT was 'I'll try, sir.' "Some 55 years after the end of the Korean War, I would like to say, 'I tried, sir,' not only in war but in all other endeavors that I took part in." Copies of McCrimmon's memoirs may be purchased at the library for $25 each. All proceeds from the sale of the books will be donated to the library. --- Antivirus: Outbound message clean. I live in Foresthill, CA. I recently discovered a copy of a 25 page, hand written document that details the history of the Miles family, starting with Joshua Ballard Miles, my great-great-great-grand father. I found the document (copy) in a file of my mother's after she passed away in May of this year. The document starts out saying "Joshua Ballard Miles & a brother came to the States but we don't know when they landed or where. Joshua Ballard Miles was born in Ireland Nov. 11, 1794. Married Elizabeth Prier 11/27/1816, they had several children then she died. He then married Elizabeth Hale and they had a host of children", and it goes on for 24 more pages detailing who married who, and dates and children born. My mother was Opal Carolyn Rial, born to Leonard C. Rial & L. Bertie Rial (Miles) in 1931 in McArthur, Ark. Bertie Miles was daughter of Oliver "Jack" Miles & Melissa Miles(Phillips)born in Monticello, Ark. in 1909. Jack was born in 1878 to Harv! ey Roger Miles & McCloe Miles(Jones). Harvey Roger Miles was born Oct. 2, 1836 to Joshua B. Miles & either Elizabeth Prier or Elizabeth Hale, don't know as there is no record of Elizabeth Prier's death. I'd love to find out more about the Miles family. As I staed my grand mother, Bertie Miles was born in Monticello, Ark. in 1909, and my mother in McArthur, Ark. in 1931. And, the Glaze home is there.. in a bad state, but there... that if Mary Jane remarried.. look for that other name. It might be "Hawes" or "House" ? Not certain, but the county has a cemetary book, and I can dig that out here. No further info on Military for Houston Glaze.. after He was substituted in CSA. So, if he went back, and later had all the kids, then there may have been reason, or not.. about Mary Jane being missing in one census..then appearing in 1870. Perhaps she was with her relatives, or being helped out by staying with another family? Or, may have been missed in the census 1860? My research on these is limited, but thanks to Liz Nash, Diane Poteet, and Lonnie Deaton.. a more complete picture of the Glaze family can be found! Thanks~ Walter L. I know Cullars has figured somewhere in my family, but I haven't been able to get the exact connection. My mother's Uncle George Gresham used to speak about "Mrs. Cullars", but I don't remember the context. I know that Uncle George Gresham, along with his two brothers (Fred, my grandfather, and Quinn) were shipped back to GA from TX, sometime after 1890. George stayed with the Billington Florence family, as per the 1900 Census, and they were a relative of some kind; the two younger boys (Fred & Quinn) stayed with their paternal grandmother, Nancy Sanders Quinn.
