A member of my family married into the HAWANCHAK family. The 1920 census image for John HAWANCHUK [sic] showed he was born in Galicia ca. 1875 or so. His wife, Catherine R., was also born in Galicia, 28 Nov. 1881. The first known child was born in 1905 in Westmoreland Co., PA. .A nephew, Charles, was also on the 1920 census, born in Galicia about 1898. . Alex HAWANCHAK was on the 1930 census for Westmoreland Co., PA, with his wife, Blanche, and children with similar names that John used in 1920, plus additional ones who should have been with John in 1920 if they were his children.. Alex and his wife were born in Poland, ca 1891. John and Catherine were not found on the 1930 census under Hawanchuk or Hawanchek. Since this isn't a direct line, I wondered if someone knew a general area in Galicia where this surname may have been prominent?
