Hi, I am searching for a record of my grandfather arriving in the US from somewhere in Poland. I have searched for his name on ship manifests as I did for my grandmother but no luck. They were not acquainted when they immigrated. My grandfather was George Wojciech Szymaszek, b. 29 Sept. 1857 or 1858 in Poland (Austria). Immig. 1882 to 1885, could not read or write.I'm told there was a brother traveling with him and they were separated after leaving Chicago on the way to Texas. Any ideas on where to look? Hi Becky Your statement, "They were not acquainted when they immigrated", indicates that your grandparents met and married here in North America. You need a copy of their marriage entry in the marriage records of the church at which they married. That entry will contain certain background information including your grandfather's home village or parish back in Poland. Catholic priests were and are required to determine that there are no outstanding impediments to a marriage. Part of the process is contacting the previous parishes of folks intending to marry. Thus, church marriage records can be a treasure trove of information. And while you're at church, how about lighting a candle for our ancestors? Becky, I also had trouble finding my grandfather's town of birth. I sent to the Social Security for a copy of his original application and also sent for his brother's original SS application. On both was the town they were born in and on the brother's was the names of their parents. Very good info on some of them. It should be easy to locate their SS information on rootsweb or ancestry.
