Thank Dennis for the information about the marriage entry in the marriage records. I have a copy of their marriagae certificate from the church but never thought to ask about the entry in the record. The church is nearby so I can pay them a visit and light that candle . You need a copy of their marriage entry in the marriage records of the church at which they married. That entry will contain certain background information including your grandfather's home village or parish back in Poland. Catholic priests were and are required to determine that there are no outstanding impediments to a marriage. Part of the process is contacting the previous parishes of folks intending to marry. Thus, church marriage records can be a treasure trove of information. And while you're at church, how about lighting a candle for our ancestors? Hi Becky An often overlooked part of the "treasure trove" of information which can be found among the old parish marriage records is the wedding banns record. In many cases, it is simply a checklist with dates ensuring the banns were actually read at three Holy Masses (usually across the span of three weeks' time) as required. But in other cases, testimonials can sometimes be found among them and those can be very enlightening. I recall happening upon one such testimonial among the banns of Zurowa Parish in SE Poland which was 4-5 sentences long and detailed the occupation and immediate family of one of the intended parties. And there were other testimonials among the banns as well. So, if you can procure a copy of your grandparents' wedding banns record, it might be a big plus for your research. (Then again, it might be a dud and might not.) Because wedding bann records were not frequently microfilmed by the crews of the Church of Latter Day Saints in Poland and the USA, many folks researching their genealogy are unaware of their existence. And even those of us who married in the Catholic Church and experienced firsthand the entire process are frequently unaware because, being young and in love, we were likely to be oblivious to most things happening around us. The fires of Spring. Ahhh, to be young and in love again. Hurry. Go light the candle.
