"Halloween", as we've come to know it, is pretty much an American creation based on the fears and superstitions of its early British colonists. If you examine the word "Halloween" closely, you'll discover that it really started out as "Hallows' Eve", i.e., the Eve of All Hallows or today the Eve of All Saints Day. This is not a scary or frightful time of the year in Poland. On the contrary, this is the time when Poles stop whatever they are doing to remember and honor their departed family members. My ancestors came from a place in Poland whose name can be colorfully translated as "Creepy Hollow", but our old parish cemetery will be anything but creepy on 1 November. It will be almost festive, with flowers everywhere and illuminated by thousands of candles. Cheers!
