Hi Tom Six million Polish citizens were killed during World War II. There is no single website or online database that provides the names, places, dates, and circumstances of death for all the victims. This online database might be the best currently available, but it contains only about 1.5 million names. It is affiliated with Poland's Institute of National Remembrance. http://www.straty.pl/ Roughly 1 out of 6 Polish citizens did not survive the war. Victims are mourned in every Polish village and in every Polish family. On 27 August 1944, my Great Aunt Stefania and second cousin Aniela together with her infant daughter, along with four women from the neighboring Paprock family, were killed by a German "air burst" shell exploding in a hazelnut tree as they huddled together in a shallow creek bed. They were trying to flee from their burning farms. The Germans knew they were non-combatants. Was it an atrocity? Yes. Was it recorded anywhere? Only in the parish records and they, in turn, were burned by the Soviet Red Army in January 1945. Hi Ken Sadly, the toll of 41 Roma executed in your ancestral village of Bielcza was eclipsed by the execution of 93 Roma in nearby Szczurowa. These were merely two events of the "Porajmos" or Gypsy Holocaust conducted under the direction of Adolph Hitler. But please be comforted by the fact that these victims of Nazi criminals are not forgotten. See: http://spuscizna.org/spuscizna/roma.html Poles in western Galicia, historic Malopolska, can hold their heads up high. They followed their consciences and moral convictions with regards to their neighbors. They generally refused to obey the German occupations laws regarding Jews although the penalty was death. And thus they appear in large numbers in Yad Vashem's "Righteous Among the Nations". See: http://spuscizna.org/spuscizna/righteous-poles.html This topic is quite depressing. Tis the season to be jolly.
