    1. [GALICIA] REMAK SURNAME
    2. LOUIS MICHAEL BARSI
    3. Good Afternoon, List Members, Has anyone heard of the REMAK surname anywhere in Galicia? My Great Grandfather was born somewhere in Galicia about 1870, but I have no idea where. I would appreciate any clues or suggestions. Thank you. Lou Barsi

    3. Hi Lou No, but you will find REMAX signs in front yards and in business windows in SE Poland. REMAX is now a global real estate firm with offices in Krakow, Bielsko-Biala, and Zakopane in the former Austrian Crownland of Galicia. I think the surname REMAK has been Americanized. The best way to determine its original form would be to visit or contact the rectory of the parish in which he married in North America and obtain a copy of his marriage record. That marriage record will contain a whole bunch of interesting information including his parents' names, his home village and home diocese plus the same information regarding his bride. It is certainly worth the price of the donation that you'll make to the parish in exchange for it. (If he didn't marry in North America, then obtain of their children's baptismal records or a marriage record copy of your earliest ancestor who did marry in North America. Keep in mind that you want a copy of the actual entry, not a certificate of any kind.) We could speculate on what the surname was, but that really wouldn't get you any closer to the real truth. It could have been any one of a number of surnames, including REMDZIAK (in 1990, 3 resided around Tarnobrzeg), REMIEC (in 1990, there were 8 around Krosno) and REMSAK (in 1990, 60 around Bielsko-Bialy and 2 around Rzeszow). Now, if you decide not to follow my suggestion about securing that parish marriage record, then you might begin your search around Bielsko-Biala where there's both a REMAX office and 60 folks named REMSAK. You just might get lucky. But, then again, maybe not. Cheers and good luck in your endeavor! 3. Hi Lou I am troubled by this. It would appear that our list member Mary Snow provided you with the information found on the 1900 and 1910 US Census entries for the Remoch/Remock/Remak of Woodbridge Township NJ on 28 December 2008. This very same information was provided to you by Kathy Stevenson of the Rootsweb New York List on 20 December 2008. Which one of them didn't you believe? I've known and collaborated with Mary Snow for a long, long time and I will certainly vouch for her. No matter how many times nor on how many lists you ask the question, the answer is likely to always be same. Your great grandparents came from somewhere in the Kingdom of Hungary, not the Kingdom of Austria. Galicia (SE Poland and W Ukraine) was for a time a crownland of the Kingdom of Austria. Your search should focus on Slovakia and Hungary. There are no magical Polish elves eagerly waiting to jump out from behind your display screen and do your work for you. Sorry, but you need to roll up your sleeves and start to do some research yourself. Dennis Benarz http://spuscizna.org/ p.s. Thanks for the tip, Lavrentiy! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dennis Benarz" <benarz@hotmail.com> To: <galicia@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, June 18, 2009 4:16 PM Subject: Re: [GALICIA] REMAK SURNAME > Hi Lou > > No, but you will find REMAX signs in front yards and in business windows > in > SE Poland. 3. Hello Lou and Dennis, Lou, using the Steve Morse search engine for Ellis Island, looks like you will find 38 surname Remak from Hungary. http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/EIDB/ellis.html Mary Dennis Benarz wrote: > Hi Lou > > I am troubled by this. 3. I'm sorry, Dennis. I would be delighted to do as you suggest. However, two strokes have left me disabled, so I have to depend on the help of others. This is a task complicated by the fact that this family did not want to be discovered and were probably illiterate. My neurologist suggested that genealogy was good mental exercise; she was right.
