    3. Whatever happened to those two prime Polish virtues - patience and > intemperance? > > I need a drink. > > Dennis Dennis-- Patience and intemperance do not mix well. Seldom have I run into a situation where the heavy drinker was fill of patience. Maybe you are being playful. Ja teraz chcem 100 gram Wyborowei , i ja nie chcem czekac. Ludwik

    3. Hi Ludwik Since my answers are seldom brief, there's no way that I can follow the old proverb "Brevity is the soul of wit". So, instead, I try to follow the equally old adage "Always leave them laughing" when I compose my responses. It's become a personal habit that I try to inject a little humor into the end of all my posts. I hadn't considered the possibility that anyone would take offense to my remark and if I have offended you or anyone else on this mailing list, I sincerely apologize. In defense of my attempt at humor, I should like to point out that it has been written that the reputation of Galicians was "tarnished by... the often nasty habit of drunkenness". So wrote Bronislaw Gustawicz in his book "Galicya" (Krakow, 1880). So, I am not the first person to make such an observation. Speaking of personal habits: Intemperance? I've been there, done that, and not likely to do it again. I thought I'd earned the right to joke about it since I've been sober for nearly a decade now, but I'm not about to proselytize anyone who enjoys a drink. Na zdrowie, Pan! Dennis p.s. In direct response to your closing comment in Polish: In my opinion, all good things are worth waiting for - including Wyborowa. I have an unopened bottle of Krolewska that was given to me as a gift from a Polish colleague about seven years ago. I'm saving it to share with the priest who gives me the Last Rites. I want to be well lubricated for that final trip. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lou" <loumarchuk@yahoo.com> To: <galicia@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, August 09, 2009 6:48 PM Subject: [GALICIA] patience and intemperance?
