Hello Dennis and Bobbi, All four of the places with name Wysocko had a Rusyn/Ukrainian population and each village had a Greek Catholic church: 1. There is a Wysocko near Brody, Ukraine. 2. There is a Wysocko near Jaroslaw, Poland. 3/4. There is Wysocko Wyzne and Wysocko Nizne near Borynia, Ukraine. All four were in Galicia and then in Poland. All four places had Rusyns/Ukrainians. I suppose only candidates 1 and 3/4 would be characterized as being in "Ukraine-Poland". However, some nationalist Ukrainians will insist that candidate 2. was also in "Ukraine". ______ Lavrentiy Krupniak Dennis Benarz wrote: > > Hi Bobbi > > WYSOCKO is about 6 miles SE of Jaroslaw Miasto (Jaroslaw City). > > While there are other villages named Wysocko in contemporary Poland, this > one fits your criteria of having been in the former Crownland of Galicia and > having had Greek Catholic residents. > > I cannot offer any guess as to which Wysocko is your best bet to research > first. Hi Bobbi WYSOCKO is about 6 miles SE of Jaroslaw Miasto (Jaroslaw City). While there are other villages named Wysocko in contemporary Poland, this one fits your criteria of having been in the former Crownland of Galicia and having had Greek Catholic residents. I cannot offer any guess as to which Wysocko is your best bet to research first. Wysocko near Brody, Wysocko near Jaroslaw, Wysocko Wizne and Wysocko Nizne near Turka all fit your criteria. I can only add that the surname SZELEST can still be found today in the Rzeszow and Przemysl areas which would include Jaroslaw, but the surname ZOMMER cannot. And both surnames can be found in the "new" western Polish provinces where folks forcibly removed from SE Poland were likely to have been resettled because of "Akcja Wisla" in 1947. Is that a tie-breaker for your decision? I'm not sure. So, when it comes to choosing an LDS microfilm, it's largely a case of "you pays your money and you takes your chances". Hi Terry In 1900, KRYSTYNOPOL and DOBRACZYN were in the Sokol administrative district and Sokol township (gmina). Roman Catholic and Jewish residents worshipped at Krystynopol while Greek Catholics worshipped at Krystynopol and Dobraczyn respectively. Since you posed your question to a mailing list focused on Galicia, I think the villages you have identified as "Zamosc" and "Gliminy" are really ZAMOSCIE and GLINIANY which, in 1900, were in the Przemyslany administrative district and Gliniany township (gmina). If I have guessed wrong, then I must sadly inform you that there are at least 13 villages and towns named ZAMOSC elsewhere in today's Poland and no village named GLIMINY anywhere in Poland or central Europe. Thus, my official response would have to be "The crystal ball is dark. Please try again." You might want to add to your list the WYSOCKO near Jaroslaw (Poland) which had its own Greek Catholic church. You want the LDS FHL Wysocko (Borynia) records. Wysocko is Polish place name for Vysits'ko which was comprised of mostly Rusyn/Ukrainian people. _______ Lavrentiy Krupniak Raven Fan wrote: > > Hi All, > > I have need of your expertise and hope that you are willing to help educate > me. Shtetlseeker has all the towns in its database: http://www.jewishgen.org/Communities/LocTown.asp The LDS FHL has some of the old vital records for the places. Are the families Poles or Ukrainians or mixture? _______ Lavrentiy Krupniak Terry Sawzak wrote: > > Could anyone help me find these towns listed in my husband's grandparents' various records? > Krystynopol, Dobroczyn, Zamosc, Gliminy > Does anyone have any connection to these names? > Sawczak, Pelka, Ozechowska, Prochyza. > > Thanks, > Terry
Listers: http://tinyurl.com/35y89h is now showing 2809 villages that have been filmed, this is an increase of 25 new names. Unfortunately I know of no other way to tell which are the newest listed and there are approximately 29 pages to roll through. However it is worth checking the list. Helen Ginn
Hi All, I have need of your expertise and hope that you are willing to help educate me. I have been trying to pay attention to the discussions about this southeastern portion of Poland, and I have read a good bit of history on various web pages. I want to find out more about where I should be looking for families that state they are from Wysocko, Ukraine-Poland, or Wysocko, Galicia on their ship manifests. I understand how the borders have changed over time due to wars, etc. I am trying to search for the ancestors of my 2nd cousins. Our 3 grandmothers were sisters. These women came from Parchanie, Inowroclaw, Poland and went to Crompton, RI. One sister married a man named Havrylo/Gabryl Szelest. Another sister married a man named Tadej/Tadeusz Zommer. I have been researching my own grandmother and grandfather for the past 4 years and have traced back to ~1700 on their ancestors in towns in northern Poland. Now I want to help my cousins research their grandfathers. I want to be sure I am looking in the correct place. Havrylo Szelest was born 13 Dec 1878 in Wysocko. He was the first husband of Pelagia. This branch of the family reports that Havrylo/Gabryl Szelest died ~1919 and Pelagia married the brother, Stefan Szelest. Stefan Szelest was born in Wysocko ~ 1895 according to his ship manifest, but the family is not sure of this, nor do they have any papers from Stefan Szelest. These brother list their parents' names as Thomas and Mary Szelest from Wysocko, Austria. On various documents the brothers report: Ukraine, or Galicia, or Austria. I do understand why. Somehow I suspect these brothers are also related to Mikolaj Szelest and Paraska Szelest (who are brother & sister) found on ship manifests, who came from Wysocko and who lived in Crompton, RI. The other sister married Tadej/Tadeusz Zommer. He was born 18 Sep 1881 in Wysocko. This branch of the family reports that they always had to celebrate Greek Catholic Christmas for their grandfather at his insistence. Tadej had brothers Prokop/Reler, Benjamin, and another one. On the LDS site I find microfilms for Wysocko (Brody), Wysocko Wyzne (Borynia), and Wysocko Nizne (Borynia). If I am lucky, I may only be able to find the birth record for Havrylo/Gabryl Szelest in 1878 on LDS film 2010583 Item 4 or maybe Item 6. Do you think I will find him there? Am I looking in the right place? How and where can we write to request the birth records for the grandfathers in 1881 and 1895? Thank you in advance for any help you can be. Bobbi McCaffrey (100% Polish, just hiding behind this Irish name :)
Could anyone help me find these towns listed in my husband's grandparents' various records? Krystynopol, Dobroczyn, Zamosc, Gliminy Does anyone have any connection to these names? Sawczak, Pelka, Ozechowska, Prochyza. Thanks, Terry
The address might work because 38-450 is the postal code for all of Dukla, but the correct parish is Sw. Marii Magdaleny (Saint Mary Magdalene) and the current church was built in the 1770. (Reference: Slownik Geograficzny Krolewsta Polskiego, Volume 2, page 211.) This address will work much better: Sw. Marii Magdaleny Trakt Wegierski 18 38-450 Dukla Woj. Podkarpackie POLAND One has to be careful in determining the correct 19th Century parish used by our ancestors because monasteries and cloisters dot the Polish countryside and many became parish churches only in the second half of the 20th Century. By the way, in the late 19th Century Iwla had 775 residents (all Roman Catholics at the time) and the local noble estate was owned by Cezar Mecinski. (Reference: SGKP, Volume 3, page 325.) Hi Mary and Roman According to the 1900 Austrian census, Iwla was in the Krosno administrative district and Dukla township (gmina). Both its Roman Catholic and Jewish residents worshipped at Dukla; no Greek Catholics were enumerated as residents. Unfortunately, I can't give you the name and address of the parish in Dukla because the Archdiocese of Przemysl's website is down at this moment. It's southwest of Krosno and about 5 KM west of Dukla. -Marie

Hello everyone. I am hoping to "decipher" the name of a town listed on an Passenger List from 1913. It lists the gentleman's name as Piotr Szwast coming from Iwla?? in Galicia. Does this name sound familiar to anyone? I have tried looking it up on the internet to no avail. I may be reading it incorrectly, but that's was it looks like. Hope to hear from someone.
