Hi everyone, I hope you can point me in the right direction. Bear with me, I am very new at this! My grandfather's family (Wosachlo) is from Olchowiec, as I found from ship manifests, and I was able to narrow it down to six Olchowiec villages. The family is also listed as being from Galicia so after some research I was able to narrow it down to two. The first is in the administrative district of Gmina Czarna in Bieszczady county in the Subcarpathian voivodeship and the other is Gmina Dukla in Krosno county, same voivodeship. I have absloutely nothing to go on from my family, everyone is deceased that would have any knowledge at all. I was able to locate some churches in the Dukla area but that is where my trouble lies. I found the archdioscese for Liblin which says it includes Dukla, but that voivodeship is for another village called Olchowiec. I assume there were no churches in the village since my reasearch shows anywhere from 400 people to 10 people in each village. Can anyone out there point me in the right direction? Hi All, It has been a while since I updated my findings, but here is where I am at now. It appears as if the correct spelling of my grandmother’s maiden name was “Winnicki” if the majority rules. I found many mid-1830-1870 records for Hladki and most had that spelling. Her mother’s family name, Halian, was pretty much consistent. Having found these records, I was encouraged, but the Hladki records end in 1866. Czerniechów records don’t go any further. Since Plotycz records show only a couple people with one of the family name, so it looks as if she was Greek Catholic. My problem now is finding any records from 1866 through 1910. Using the Austrian army topographical maps, I checked Family History Center films for other churches in the area, but haven’t found anything with later records. My grandmother was born May 7, 1900, but I can’t find anything close to that time. LDS has Czerniechów Hariachs’ka Church and Hospital’s’ka Church, are these worth looking into? Any other suggestions? I still have hopes of identifying her uncle who was a bishop put to death by the Nazis; he was either a Winnicki or Halian. Thanks, John

Thank you Kolya, The translation site you forwarded was helpful. I was able to copy/ paste the information I found on Wanda Majrzycka regarding some of the roles she played in Krakow and Teatr Narodowy Warsaw. I also found some information at www.indeks.karta.org.pl/represje sowieckie that reads: This goes on to list many names including Wanda Majchrzycka. However the translation of that document left me puzzling because the English translation read: "In the years 1988-2002 with the "index of repressed" - cooperated: KARTA: . . ." I am still puzzling over whether this means she cooperated in compiling the index OR did she cooperate with the repression?? Big difference in meaning, here, the translation missed the mark for me. My Polish is not good enough to make out the meaning and the translation left me puzzled too. If you, Kolya, or anyone on the list has a better command of the Polish language than I do, I'd be grateful for any help you can offer. Hi Don Dobrzechow? That's one tough request. Can't I send you a picture of the old wooden parish church in Dobrkow instead? The reason why your request is a tough one is that Dobrzechow Parish is in Powiat Strzyzow (Strzyzow County) and the Strzyzow area has always been served by "the road less travelled". I can't find a historical society or regional museum serving Strzyzow County. This means that, although such a photo may indeed exist, it is likely still in the hands of a private individual. Your best shot at finding such a photo is to send an inquiry directly to Dobrzechow Parish. The parish would have a great interest in preserving such a photo. Sw. In the case of my ancestral parish 20+ miles to the north, our family preserved five photos of our second wooden parish church which was destroyed in 1945. (The first wooden church was built around 1275 and the second replaced it in 1511 AD). Our pastor always kept in mind who had such photos and would request that he be allowed to display them at events from time to time. The same is probably true of the pastor at Dobrzechow Parish. Hi Ludwik Since my answers are seldom brief, there's no way that I can follow the old proverb "Brevity is the soul of wit". So, instead, I try to follow the equally old adage "Always leave them laughing" when I compose my responses. It's become a personal habit that I try to inject a little humor into the end of all my posts. I hadn't considered the possibility that anyone would take offense to my remark and if I have offended you or anyone else on this mailing list, I sincerely apologize. In defense of my attempt at humor, I should like to point out that it has been written that the reputation of Galicians was "tarnished by... the often nasty habit of drunkenness". So wrote Bronislaw Gustawicz in his book "Galicya" (Krakow, 1880). So, I am not the first person to make such an observation. Speaking of personal habits: Intemperance? I've been there, done that, and not likely to do it again. Just wanted to add to Dennis' excellent explanation of telephone directories in Poland. Most people - even very small children - use cell phones there. Quite often people own multiple handsets (multiple numbers) and change cell phones frequently. Residential phones are used mainly as an emergency - quite opposite to us here - at least in the cases of private homes, because of prohibitive costs. In Poland, in addition to a monthly subscription fee every phone call is charged additionally - even the local calls. Mobile phones come out much cheaper, plus they offer much more options for free or almost-free -like text messages and email, not to mention convenience. Plus they never charge you for incoming calls/SMS! In Europe generally, the cell phones are much, much more accessible cost wise to an average person than they are in North America. And lastly, there are hundreds of competing mobile providers to choose from who just want your business and offer fantastic bargains. Just one example - 1000 text messages/month free. That's 30 messages a day! Doing a small math here - handset free to $10, SIM card with number $2.00 - and for next to nothing you can keep in touch with the world using just SMS (and believe me many do just that). And, if you are bored with you cell or just spotted a new bargain, you toss your handset into a garbage bin and get a new one. I'm always perplexed how often my cousins change their cell phone numbers - no point for me to even write them down - they are never current. And, as Dennis has explained - all directories - of any kind - that involve people's personal info are always opt-ins by default. That's not too difficult if you are really knowledgeable regarding the geography of a particular area and are familiar with its backroads and villages, but not very many people on this list are. Polish telephone directories are not structured the same as directories in North America. Here is Chicago, you can grab a Northwest Suburban Directory and look up a surname across scores of different towns and villages because we structure our directories alphabetically by surname only. Not so in Poland. There the directories are structured alphabetically by village then by surname. The second "clinker" is that, because of Polish privacy laws (which are patterned pretty much on German privacy laws), Polish telephone directories provide only street names (no house numbers) for subscribers in cities and no addresses at all for subscribers in rural villages. So, this second "clinker" really limits the utility of Polish directories as a research tool for contacting possible relatives by mail. The third inherent problem is that, unlike the practice in North America where everyone is in the telephone directory unless they "opt out" and get an unlisted number, in Poland it is just the opposite - telephone subscribers must "opt in" to be included in the directory. Not everyone with a telephone will be found in Polish directories. Plus, cell phones are extremely popular and you won't find any listings of cell phone users at all. Here's are examples of listings for a portion of Debica County taken from the 2002 Rzeszow Regional Telephone Directory. Please take note of how we had to rearrange the directory by old parishes to make it a more useful tool for North American researchers. See: http://spuscizna.org/spuscizna/telephone.html . In our telephones pages, Debica and Pilzno are the only towns large enough to qualify for having a street name follow the given name of a subscriber. (I can't believe that it's been six or seven years since we posted that stuff on the internet. How quickly time flies.) Just this morning I checked the Polish residential telephone directories via "Ksiaska Telefoniczna" (another online residential directory probably using the same database) for the presence of a surname in a parish north of Rzeszow. This was at the request of a researcher associated with the State Trustees in Melbourne who were searching for a late estate owner's next of kin. Luckily, I knew exactly in which villages to look but I didn't have any luck. So, in my opinion, it is a research tool of very limited applications. It works for native Poles because they know the local geography. For the most part, we don't. By the way, does anybody still heat with coal and get a "clinker" now and then? Cheers! Dennis
