H, 14TH GA. INFANTRY Born in 1841 in Laurens County, son of Josiah and Sarah Bedingfield Gay. . Married Cinderella Gilder( born in 1842). Enlisted on May 3, 1862. Wounded on Dec. 13, 1862 at Fredericksburg, Va.. Wounded at Wilderness, Va. on May 6, 1864. Captured at Richmond, Va. on April 3, 1865 and taken to Newport News, where he was released on June 26, 1865. RCS 2-391, Mid 1800 People, p. 17, Burch/ Harrell II, p. 148. The Laurens Co Cemetery Records book shows that a Henry Gay was buried at Gilder Cemetery just off Pine Hill Rd which is near Interstate 16 and 441 S. No dates of birth or death are listed. However, an inscription says "Co. H, 14th Ga. Inf., CSA /23/1817 - Legatees Elizabeth Beddingfield, James Beddingfield, Salley Beddingfield, William Beddingfield, and Needom Beddingfield. Executors were James H. McCullers and Elizabeth Beddingfield. Witnesses: Charles D McCullers, Josiah Gay and Eli Clark. 11/13/1817 - Josiah Gay marries Sally Bedingfield. 3/8/1819 - Needham Benefield is shown eligible Capt. Sion Smith district. comment states he was a orphan of S. Benefield. 5/00/1822 - Archibald Griffen appointed gaurdian of William and Needham, both idiots. 3/00/1824 - Corth allows $10 to Mrs. Bedingfield for William and Needham. William dies on 7/7/1824 7/7/1828 - Court allowed Josiah Gay $50 for taking care of Needham Benefield, an idiot. 4/11/1829 - Court allowed Josiah Gay $37.5 for taking care od Needham Benefield from march 1826 - 7/7/1828. Bernice 6/1/1829 - State allowed Archibald Griffen $72.75 for furnishing provisions for Elizabeth Bennefield and her 2 idiot children.
