    3. Scott has said it is OK for me to post the following information. This next weekend, Jan. 14 and 15, 2005, there will be a gathering of CLARK researchers with families from this area of GA. Anyone who is researching the Clark or allied families are welcome. On Friday night we will have dinner together at Anne's Cottage in Dublin at 6:30 PM and Alan Thomas, Clerk of Court, is joining us. He will talk about the migration into Laurens County and answer questions. The meal is $9.50 plus gratuity and you need to let Pat Mercer know by Wed. if you plan to attend. You can reach her via email at gmercer@nlamerica.com or by phone at (478)875-3328. She, also, needs to know if you want pork or chicken. Then on Sat. we are meeting at the Presbyterian Church in Dublin in their education building. We will start at 9:30 AM and "do" genealogy until about 3:30. We may have another speaker that morning. This is very informal. Some of us know each other and some don't so feel free ! to join us. Allied families are many but to name a few -- Currie, McLendon, Gillis, Branch, Brown, Browning, Burch, Daniel, Dixon, Gay, Harrelson, Hudson, Joiner, Lindsey, Livingston, Locke, Lowery, Miller, Towns, Woodard and Woodward. I know I left out some key names so if in doubt contact me. Sandy

They were married and owned land in Washington Co. It took me a while then the 1850 census records were put into search and then I found them in the Laurens Co. census records...All that searching and they were there all the time I just didn't at that time about part of Washington Co. was used to form another county. Now I check everywhere. Happy New Year Betty McMillan _videomiss@aol.com_ (mailto:videomiss@aol.com)

She and Frederick Faircloth were married in Laurens in 1823 when it was a bonified county. How would I find out where the Hall Family live prior to the formation of Laurens? One clue could be that they lived in the part of Wilkinson that became Laurens and I guess that therer are other possibilities also - I cannot find ANY INFO on who her parents were and where they came from - i.e. North Carolina, Virginia etc. Any suggestions? Thanks, Nancy Higgons

Thompson have been discussing for some time the idea of starting a Wynn DNA project for those Wynn’s of Wilkinson County, Georgia. We would like to get DNA tests on known MALE DESCENDANT’s WITH THE SURNAME OF WYNN of these gentlemen: JAMES (b.1800), JOHN (b. 1787), ASHLEY (b. 1804),. BARTLEY, b. 1793), OBEDIAH (b. 1813) to WILLIAM WYNN, JR. (b. 1790, d. 1870), all of Wilkinson County, Georgia. We are hoping to find one volunteer from each family line to do a simple do-it-yourself at home DNA test and we are also hoping to find cousins willing to help pay for these tests. I am willing to help pay for testing a known descendant of Bartley Wynn and I know that Gervaise is willing to help pay for testing on her line. The number of markers tested determines the cost, of course the more markers tested the more you can be sure of the results. These tests can cost over $200. These tests will not prove that so-and-so was someone’s father and it will not prove that two individual’s were brother’s. What it will establish is that two individuals had a common ancestor. If you would like to participate in some capacity we would appreciate you contacting us at geoffrey.thompson@sbcglobal.net or Gervaise Wynn Perdue at gwperdue@cox.net

    2. Hi Darleen, I have forgotten exactly what I sent you re: Colby Smith but his memorial is quite impressive. It is located in Washington Co., GA along state highway 15 at Montgomery Road just yards from the grave sites of Colby Smith, Thomas Wood, John Lawson Irwin and Governor Jared Irwin. The walkway bricks are engraved with the names of the hundreds of supporters and descendants. There are four bricks there for my grandmother (Martha Jane New Belflower), my father (Harry Esra Belflower), myself and my late granddaughter (Jaclyn Marie Belflower). The site is just a couple of miles south of Sandersville, Georgia. It was dedicated October 26, 1996 and among the guests of honor were my cousins the late Mrs. Tommy Dorsey and the Honorable Jacob New. Colby and Rebecca's daughter Anne Colby Smith married Thomas Wood in 1903 in Washington County. I am descended from that union. Thomas's father was Revolutionary War Lieutenant James E. Wood (b. Loudon Co., VA). He was granted land in Georgia as a result of his Rev. War service and is my GGGGrandfather. His father was Samuel Wood, b. May 2, 1737, Leicestershire, England. Samuel was the son of a wealthy woolen manufacturer in that city. He and his five brothers immigrated to the Virginia colony around 1755. Samuel enlisted in the army and served as George Washington's personal secretary in the French and Indian Wars. Hope this answers your questions. I have nothing on Daniel Smith. Harry Belflower

    3. Harry, Sorry I've been so long to reply. Thank you for all the info on Colby Smith. Where is the memorial? I wasn't aware that there is one. And, yes, I am in central GA. I got into looking at the Colby Smith family some time ago for my own research, instead of my husband's family. I have a paternal and a maternal SMITH family. The paternal line is from William Daniel SMITH (1801-1860) who lived in Emmanuel and Johnson counties. I haven't been able to find out who his parents were or where he came from, although I know he was born in GA. (If anyone is researching that family, I'd like to exchange data.) Thanks, too, for checking your WOOD data for me. We don't have much on that branch of the family and I'd like to be able to learn more about them. Darleen

    1. Re: [[GALAUREN]] Re: [[GALAUREN]] Re: [[GALAUREN]] SMITH, HARDEN
    2. Hi Darleen, Thank you for the nice response and the information about George W. Smith. I have him as the youngest child of Colby and Rebecca and born in Burke County in 1798. That could be significant as Burke is one of the original Georgia counties and is immediately north of Washington. If you are located in central Georgia you probably already know this so please forgive me. However, you may want to remember to look in that direction, also. I must call your attention to the fact that all of the Colby Smith children, except George, were born in Chatham Co., NC. Isaac was the last child born there and that was on Oct 14, 1796. By the way, I show both Isaac and George as Reverends. It would seem that Colby and Rebecca moved from Chatham Co., NC to Georgia (Burke Co.) between 1796 and 1798. I may possibly have additional information in my paper files but have not been an active researcher in several years. Am becoming quite old but still in good health. I supported the Colby Smith memorial and have visited it twice on trips from my home in Maryland to my birthplace in Jacksonville, FL. I purchased four bricks. One each for my grandmother Martha Jane New (daughter of Martha Elizabeth Wood), Harry E. Belflower, Sr.,my (father), myself and my late granddaughter, Jaclyn Marie Belflower. If you ever visit the memorial you may step on my name if you so desire. I checked my database but could find none of the Wood people that you mentioned but I would suspect that there is a connection. I do possess additional Wood genealogical dat that I have never entered because it was rather voluminous and not my direct line. Would have taken a lot of my time. Perhaps, I should review that. I am sorry that I could be of more assistance. Harry Belflower

    3. Harry, Thank you for the information. I've just started researching my husband's family. He had done some research a few years ago and I'm trying to pick up where he left off. I have the George W. SMITH family book. He is a son of Colby SMITH. I saw in the book that George had a son named Henry and the name appears in other generations. I was hoping that perhaps George also had a brother named Henry, but I guess the name comes from Rebecca's surname. My husband also has a Wood family line. The earliest ancestor he has record of is David WOOD, b. 10-15-1828; d. 2-22-1879 in Laurens Co., GA. He married Margaret GLOVER 10-7-1827 in Laurens Co. He had a son, William A. WOOD, whose daughter, Virginia, was my husband's grandmother. Does this family appear to be related to yours? Darleen Miller
