Surnames: Wadford-Watford-Hubbard-Hammock Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Zc.2ADI/1897 Message Board Post: I am researching my g-grandfather, William Henry Whadford, 1860’s-1939. His original surname/family connection may be Wadford, Watford, Wafford, Wofford, Wolford, Walford, Woodford, Whitford, Halford, Alford or a close variation from Laurens County with Alabama connections. William Henry Whadford was supposedly born September 15, 1862(?) in Alabama(?) approximately during the Civil War years (different years on different censuses 1900-1930) and the tale told is that his family may have originally come from the Carolinas and/or Georgia to perhaps Newton, Dale County, Alabama, where he may have been born. He was orphaned at a young age when his family may have died in a "plague" possibly on a river(house)boat and the story has it he was discovered alone after a couple of days. What happened to him next is unknown, as he may have been sent to an orphanage or home, but at some point, he was claimed by a supposed “uncle” where he may have been an indentured servant on a farm. This may have been in Alabama or Florida, but ran away with supposed “cousins” when he was a young boy and they ended in Texas. The family is able to trace him from his first marriage to Mary E. Havens on October 25, 1885 in Rains County, Te! xas. There is an 1870 census of Shelby County, Hillsboro, P.O., Alabama, page 423 that lists a Willie Wadford, but I cannot find any further information: Hubbard, James D. age 24, M, W, Farmer b. Alabama. Mollie, age 20, F, W, Keeping house, b. Alabama. Walter R. or B., age 1 , M, W, At Home, b. Alabama. Wadford, ? (Annie, (N)Annie, Ammie short for Amelia?), age 25, F, W, At Home, b. Alabama. Wadford, Willie, age 4, M, W, At Home, b. Alabama. There is also an 1880 census of Butler County, Oaky Streak, Alabama, page 496 that lists a William Wadferd and I cannot find any further information on this family/listing either: Hammock, George, age 49, M, W, Farmer, b. Alabama. Sarah, age 49, F, W, Wife, b. Alabama. Elizabeth, age 18, F, W, Daughter, b. Alabama. Wadferd, William, age 24, M, W, Laborer, b. Alabama. Allison listed on http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/deeds/1821/1821ab.txt and, according to this text he was living in Laurens county in 1821. Therefore, I'm wondering if anyone has any 1820 city directories or anything (Tried the 1820 census but couldn't find him--but Heritage had a lot of question marks pertaining to that census in Laurens) of the sort to help me locate this man and/or his parents if they're still with him at this time. I've been tracing his path but this is as early I can get with the exception of knowing his birth date and location in Greene County. Any help or advice would be appreciated--thanks! Brent

There is some confusion regarding Leary (Larry) Hobbs and Unity Clementine Scarborough who were married December 23, 1858 in Laurens County. This was Larry's first marriage--he was never married to Elizabeth Nobles. This Larry is the son of J. Larry Hobbs. According to his headstone, he was born Dec 3, 1833 and died Dec 9, 1911. The Larry Hobbs that married Elizabeth Nobles was the son of Bolling Hobbs, one of J. Larry Hobbs' brothers. This Larry Hobbs was born in 1830, died in 1858. He married Elizabeth Nobles June 6, 1850 in Laurens County. In "Hobbs and Related Families", Volume 1, Ralph Hobbs has some erroneous information regarding these two Hobbs. I have thoroughly researched these two Larry Hobbs and provided Ralph with my findings. He agreed that the information regarding the same Larry Hobbs marrying first Elizabeth Nobles and then Unity Clementine Scarborough was incorrect. John

That is not the Larry that was married to Eliza Nobles. That Larry died in 1858. I don't know where he is buried. Eliza is buried at Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Bleckley County. J. Leary Jr born Dec. 3, 1833, died Dec. 9, 1911. The tombstone just has Leary Hobbs. Unity Clementine born Jan. 16, 1846, died Oct. 2, 1906 These dates are from the tombstones. Larry, Sr. and Polly are buried at the Hobbs Family Cemetery in Dexter. I don't have much info on Nancy and James witherington. Eliza Nobles Hobbs is supposedly buried in the same cemetery plot as daughter Mabel Catherine Hobbs Jones and husband Benjamin Franklin Jones are buried. Unfortunately, I don't have the information on where the Jones are buried, but perhaps that's easier to find out. Elwood Padgett
