Surnames: Powell Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Zc.2ADI/1434 Message Board Post: Hello, I am searching for Larkin Powell who came to Laurens County sometime in 1840s. He was married to Nancy and they had the following children and they do show up in the 1850 census of Laurens County. Larkin was listed as born in SouthCarolina in 1807 and he won the land lottery drawing in 1827 of Cowetta County. I desperately am seeking any information you might have. I can't seem to find his grave in a cemetary anywhere in Laurens County or his wife Nancy's. I have no last name for her. I know that Larkin remarried a Matilda Culpepper in the 1860s and had a daughter named Lucy with her. I really would like any info you could give me. The children Larkin and Nancy had together are as follows:Susan Powell b 1832, John Powell b1834, William Powell b 1837, Rhody Powell b 1838, David Powell b 1840, Joseph Powell b 1843, Mary Elizabeth Powell b April 23,1845 (she is who I am seeking), Thomas C. Dublin Post, 12 Oct 1880: Not A Candidate, To the people of Laurens County I hereby announce that I am not a candidate for the office of tax receiver at the coming election, nor will be. I have held the office for four years which I think is enough at one time. With many thanks to my friends for their past support, I decline running for the present. A. J. Dublin Post, 28 Jan 1880: A Dastardly Crime, On last Tuesday night while Mr. Richard Odom was in Dublin attending court in the capacity of a grand juror, some cowardly villian taking advantage of his absence, went to his home, in the extreme eastern portion of the county and burned a house, a stack of fodder, and some fence. The house stood some distance in the field from the dwelling and contained a quantity of oats and all the plow gear. The party who committed this crime is a very eligible candidate for the chain gang, and it is hoped he may be detected and brought to justice. Dublin Post, 28 Jan 1880: New Road, Laurens Court of Ordinary, For County Purposes, 3 Jan 1880, Whereupon certain petitioners have made application praying the opening of a new public road, commencing at Mercer's Creek Bridge on the Durien Road, and running in the direction of Bartow, by the residences of John Wilken, Richard Thigpen Sr, M. Thigpen, R.A. Odum, and W. H. H. McLendon to intersect with the Bartow Road at the Laurens and Johnson County line at the lower side of Vaughn Hilbun's plantation: And R. A. Odum, Richard Thigpen, and W. H. H. McLendon, comm'rs appointed to review said contemplated road, have filed their report recommending said road to be made a public road. These are therefore to cite and admonish all persons concerned to show cause, if any they have, why said application is not be granted on the first Tuesday in February next. John T. Duncan, Ordinary Commentary: The significance of the second article is in the relationships of most of the people listed. M. Thigpen was probably Malancthon Thigpen, son of Richard Thigpen, Sr. R. A. Odum was probably Richard Archibald Odum who married Arlia Ann Thigpen, Richard Thigpen, Sr's sister. Vaughn Hilbun's children and grandchildren married into both families of Odums and Thigpens. Dublin Post, 17 Nov 1880: "Master Octavius Hilbun was riding a mule last Saturday, when, for some reason, there grew up a misunderstanding which finally resulted in Octavius crawling out of a brush heap with a map of the Okfenokee swamp on his face." Dublin Post, 11 May 1881: "On Monday morning as Mr. M. V. Hilbun was crossing the river with a one-ox team, and the flat was about twenty yards from the eastern bank, his oxship jumped into the river. The wheels failed to go over the side of the flat and the ox's head was kept under the water till Mr. Braxton Beacham, who was in the flat, pushed the cart out. Then the ox came to the surface and floated off down stream with the cart. Two darkeys from the west side took a bateun(?), went to the relief of the floating team, unyoked the ox and let him swim to shore. The cart was then floated out also. Mr. Hilbun was knocked out of the flat and swam ashore without injury. George V Hilburn [email protected]
