HI Chris, Sorry about the mistake. Guess I was reading too fast. Harry
Thanks Harry. My interest is J.T's time on the ferry. But noting the mis-spelling they did on my grand-father...D.M might be your D.W. I'm searching for a couple of individuals in the Laurens-Dodge-Wilkinson area: 1- Furrell Seaborn Jones of Cadwell, died in 1985. Does anyone know who his parents were? 2- G.G. Warren of perhaps Dexter. I'm trying to confirm his spouse as Mary Jones? And, did Mary have a sister named Ella Jones from Dublin? Thanks. Chris Jones Roswell, GA
My grandfather, John Thomas or J.T. Jones, operated a ferry boat at what I think was called Blackshear's Ferry (all we know is family tradition says "turn of the century"). "History of Laurens County" (Vol II) has a story of Blackshear's Ferry said to be one of more fascinating, more romantic landmarks in Southeast (41/2 miles north of Dublin). The ferry was first known as "Tramble and Batey" Ferry. When General David Blackshear was sent to drive out Indians and survey land in Colonial times under Government orders, the General took over the riverboat and became known as "Blackshear's Ferry." During the 1930's, the ferry almost lost existence as government expenses were cut but since it was the oldest "rope and pulley" ferry in the nation, they kept it for another 15 years. Known ferryman have included: R. A. Watson, William Beaty, S.L. Weaver, E.M. Lake, Joseph T. Watson, D.M. Watson, J.C. Jones (believed to be John Thomas or J.T. as he went by), J.L. Boswick, and D.W. Skipper. I'd love to be able to sort out the time periods for them. W. Chris Jones Roswell, GA
Chris, My 90 yr old Mother says her Dad, Peyton Harlow Towns, ran a ferry across the Oconee River. He was born June 19, 1880 and died May 28, 1964. He had inherited land that John Gias Nicholas Freeman CLARK owned in sounth Laurens County along the Oconee River. John GNF Clarks youngest daughter, Hettie Sophie Clark, married George Belvin Towns and they were the parents of Peyton Harlow Towns. My Mother remembers that the ferry was at Baughnaughclaughbaugh Bluff where he had a stave mill and I beleive a cotton gin. He lost this land during the depression and moved into Dublin. She does not remember if the ferry had a name, but thinks her Brother might remember so I will contact him.
