    1. [GA-JONES] Dames Ferry
    2. Crilley
    3. Quoting from the Monroe History book.... Does anyone have more info on either this Ferry (or others) or these families named... I wondered if the date 1810 was correct. Monroe wasn't even formed until 1821...by the land lottery --- but of course this refers to "protection" so there probably were people in the area prior to the actual land distribution. Does anyone have any experience with land deeds for this early date? I believe that Courts gave permission for the Ferries --- but again that was probably AFTER a county was organized. I believe they regulated the Ferry rate (at least in NC they did) "George and John Dame built a ferry in 1810 which crossed the Ocmulgee River here from Jones to Monroe County for over a century. This ferry was also known as Booth's Ferry. Their home was built as a fort for protection against Indian attacks. John Dame married two of the daughters of Zachariah Booth, a Justice and prominent man in the county." Virginia Crilley
