Mosby and Union forces of the 16th and 13th New York Calvary will be dedicated at 9:30 a.m. on September 28, 2002. The commemoration will be at the historic St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church which is located at the intersection of Ox Road and Fairfax Station Road. The marker is sponsored by the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Father William Corby Division. The Virginia telephone number is (703) 978-8265. I am trying to locate Civil War information, narrative or pictorial, for Warren Anderson Mitchell, C.S.A., from Jones County, Georgia. Warren Anderson Mitchell was the great-grandson of Henry Mitchell, Revolutionary Soldier, and Sarah Maderias Mitchell of Jones County, Georgia. Warren Anderson Mitchell is my great, great grandfather. Warren Anderson Mitchell, C.S.A., was on duty, in the recruiting office, at Camp Watts, near Notasulga, Alabama, when he contracted pneumonia and died on November 20, 1862. Warren was brought home to his old home in Clinton, Georgia, and buried there. Solving this information: I have found a copy of Confederate Widow's Pension Claim Number 3655, dated August 24, 1891, for Mrs. Lucinda Christian Mitchell, the widowed spouse of Warren Anderson Mitchell. I located this document at the Washington Memorial Library in Macon, Georgia. Problem is that during General Sherman's March to the Sea, the town of Clinton was invaded and there were 15,000 Federal troops there. One-third of the town was burned. Lucinda Christian Mitchell, my great, great grandmother was a survivor of General Sherman's March to the Sea. Solving the information: 1. Was Macon, Georgia, the destination for evacuees from Clinton, Jones County, Georgia, during the invasion of Clinton, Georgia? It may be that the regimental history and company records of Warren Anderson Mitchell, C.S.A., were hidden at the destination point for evacuees. Where is a good place to look for Warren's records? The widow's claim was paid up until the year of Lucinda's death in 1902; however it did not include regimental or company information for Warren Anderson Mitchell, C.S.A. For example, the Civil War records for the brothers of my great, great grandmother, Lucinda Christian Mitchell, were found in May of 1956 (yes, 1956) in Macon, Georgia, when a Confederate monument was removed. Specifically, these were records for Company F, 45th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, raised in Jones County, Georiga. These records were removed to Macon, another county. Why did they remove the records from Jones County? Any information about evacuees from Clinton, Jones County, Georgia, would very much be appreciated.
