The 1850 census lists both Micheal W. (34), and John L. (31), as living in the John Lowe (age 79, born in NC) household. John Lowe is listed as the head. This fits with the age groupings in the 1820 and 1820 census for John Low (no "e" in 1830, but the "e" is included in 1820) of Jones County. Also, the 1820 census shows 6, and the 1830 census only shows 7 children for William Lowe (one was young enough to be born after the 1820 census). Based upon the estimated age of William's wife, I doubt there were others, unless you have other information. The 1830 census age grouping for William's children is not consistent with Cader Lowe (born in 1807), but is consistent with John Low(e). My theory is this: William Lowe's children had, by 1849, mostly moved away. William Candler had moved to Alabama by 1841, and I believe, taking Isaac R. Lowe and family with him. Cader, Micheal, and John L. are children of John Low(e), born about 1771 in NC. Abraham (M.?) Lowe of Jones County is not listed in GA in 1820, yet his age in 1830 (50-60) should definitely list him, and the age groupings do not show an older relation living with any older "head of household", except for Thomas Lowe of Warren County. Abraham was most likely a recent migrant to Jones County in 1830. Jeremiah Lowe shown in the 1850 census as age 29 is in the correct age grouping for William Lowe. Jacob Lowe I have not found yet. John W. I have not found yet. May be John Low(e) previously mentioned. So who does this leave me with as William's children? Isaac R. Lowe b 1811 unknown Lowe (male) b 1815-1820 (Jacob?) When Officer Brooks saw the body, he remembered that Mr. Will Bass, a Telegraph compositor, had found on Thursday morning of fair week, a light-colored hat at the boom, a piece of timber projecting out into the river below the Central railroad bridge. The had was recognized as that of Mr. Cook by those who saw him in the city on Wednesday. In the pockets of his clothing were found a handbook of information containing a greenback dollar bill, some loose change, a pocketknife; pocket comb, keys, etc, and a ticket over the Covington and Macon railroad from Hillsboro to Macon and return, issued October 26 and good to return until October 29. It was known that Mr. Cook came to Macon on the 26th. He was seen by Capt. F. S. Johnson on that day, and Coroner Hodnett and others remember seeing him Wednesday afternoon near Davis's stable talking to Mr. E. C. Grace. Later in the afternoon he was seen near Cassidy's bar on Fifth street and then all track of him was lost. Among those who knew him well is Mr. A. J. Ownes, the Central railroad bridge keeper, who informed the TELEGRAPH that he hoes not believe that he was on the bridge on Wednesday evening, because he always visited him when coming to town. The body was turned over to Undertaker Keating and interred in the cemetery. A half brother of Mr. Cook came in from Jones county yesterday but could not throw any light on the matter as it had been several weeks since he saw him. Coroner Hodnett's theory is that Mr. Cook was murdered and thrown in the river. He bases his theory on the fact tha he remembers the dead man to have had on a watch and chain and no such property was found on him and the further fact that the body was found straightened out. He says that of the many drowned persons he has seen, he never saw one straightened out, all being doubled up. There was some slight disfigurement of the face which might have been caused by striking a snag or rock in the water. Another theory is that Mr. Cook probably started to visit his friend Owens on the bridge, but the night being dark and rainy, he missed his footing and fell into the river. It is evident that he was drowned on Wednesday night, as he was not seen after that evening and his hat was found Thursday morning. Mr. Cook was about 38 yeard old. For some time he had be been farming near Hillsboro, in Jackson county. He came to Macon often, and those who knew him best say that sometimes he would come to spend only one day and would remain a week. I am desperately seeking the name of the ggggrandfather. My gggrandfather was Greene Ferguson who married Milly Chapman in Jones County in 1827. Greene was born in Talbot County and later lived in died in Upson County. Milly Chapman was his first wife. I find in Jones County a Joseph Ferguson married to Emily Dubose. I have always believed that Greene's father's name was Joseph. His first son was named Young Joseph and he had a daughter named Emily. The ages would be about right. Up to now, the only practical place for me to read "The History of Jones County" has been the library of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution in nearby D Street. Muster roll of Company F, Gray Volunteers (Jones County), enlisted March 11, 1862, for the war and served under General Robert E. Lee in the Army of Northern Virginia, and surrendered on April 9, 1865, at Appomattox, Virginia, as found on page 993 of "The History of Jones County, Georgia", by Carolyn White Williams. This list was in the confederate monument in Macon, Georgia, when it was opened on removal, May 1956, and is nearly identical to the roster of Company B, 12th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, found on page 992 of that same volume. There are two websites about the 45th Georgia Volunteer Infantry that I have located. Private Reuben Jackson, C.S.A. is in each listing. Reuben is his name. The Heritage and Historical Committee is re-printing Mrs. Williams book, "The History of Jones County, Georgia". It is a wonderful book, and until just recently, the only practical place for me to read a copy of it has been the library at the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, in nearby Washington, D.C. (By the way, the DAR library also has a copy of the Jones County 1850 census--there was a partial census taken, and a complete census, too. The DAR library has both). I have found the census information most helpful--it is the way you look at it that makes it so very helpful. "The History of Jones County, Georgia" is available through the Jones County Chamber of Commerce in Gray, Georgia, for a modest price of $60.00. They are now taking orders for this book. After March 1, 2003, the cost of the book (1100 pages) will be $75.00, and it is my understanding that it will only be available to June. It is very rare to find the Mitchells in the history books. Now, there are some sentimental reasons for me to buy this book. Exciting news was that documentarian Ken Burns was at Pentagon City Mall, in nearby Arlington, Virginia, on December 7th of this year. His great work, the "Civil War" is now available on DVD. May I ask if you are related to William Jackson of Jones County, Georgia? The reason I am asking you this question is that (and maybe this will be helpful) the Confederate Widow's Pension Claim of my great, great grandmother, Lucinda Christian Mitchell, widowed spouse of Warren Anderson Mitchell, C.S.A., includes the names of the requisite Three Witnesses: William Jackson; Uriah Mitchell (great, great granduncle); and B.F. Finney. I located Lucinda's Confederate Widow's Pension Claim at the Historical and Genealogical Room, Washington Memorial Library, in Macon, Georgia.
