These reminescences are wonderful and makes you remember walking down red dirt roads with grandparents, aunts and uncles. Does anyone on the list know where the Green Roberts house is in Jones County? It is mentioned in the history of Jones County, but that book doesn't give an address or town name. Does anyone have a picture of early Juliette Mill? "In 1898, a log dam was constructed on the river to furnish power with which to run the textile mill and a gin." I'm assuming that the Textile Mill first came into existence around this time.... Does anyone research Nathaniel Glover? Virginia Crilley

MAEBELL has started us off with some memories of Juliette (Jones County) If you relate to any of these things mentioned, please share with us all. This is a wonderful start!! The History of Jones County gives us how it reportedly got its name: It was when the Southern railroad was built that the little settlement became known as Juliette, and tradition says that the name was in honor of the first white woman to cross the river to make her home on the west side. Another story states that someone suggested that the two settlements, one on the east side and one on the west side be known as Romeo and Juliette. JULIETTE JULIETTE WAS A MILLING COMPANY, I WORKED IN THE COTTON MILL WHEN I WAS SIXTEEN, TO PAY MY WAS THROUGH SCHOOL. ON THE EAST SIDE OF THE RIVER WE HAD A SCHOOL, THREE STORES A BARBER SHOP. WE WERE CALLED THE RIVER RATS, BUT WE HAD FUN. WE WERE ONE BIG HAPPY FAMILY. THE STORE ON THE WEST SIDE OF JULIETTE THREE STORES ONE WAS OWNED BY THE WILLIAMS, IT IS KNOWN NOW AS THE WHISTLE STOP CAFE. I WALKED WITH MY GRANDMOTHER TO THE WEST SIDE OF JULIETTE EVERY WEEK BECAUSE SHE BOUGHT ALL HER FEED AND GROCIERYS FROM MR. WILLIAMS. ROBERT WILLIAMS INHERITED THE BUILDING WHO FORMED A PARTNERSHIP WITH JERIE LYNN WILLIAMS (NO KIN) THE STORE WAS BUILTED IN 1927 BY EDWARD L. WILLIAMS. I WILL SEND MORE LATER. THE TOWN OF JULIETTE WAS FIRST CALLED "GLOVER" AFTER DR. GLOVER WHO BUILT THE COTTON MILL NEAR THE RIVER IN EAST JULIETTE. THE TOWNS OF ICEBURG AND BROWNSVILLE HAD SPRUNG UP EARLIER BUT DISAPPEARED AS JULIETTE BEGAN TO GROW WITH THE COMING OF THE EAST TENNESSEE, VIRGINIA AND GEORGIA RAILROAD IN 1882. BEING SPLIT BY THE OCMULGEE RIVER, THE TOWN OF JULIETTE IS IN MONROE COUNTY AND EAST JULIETTE IN JONES COUNTY. ROBERT M. WILLIAMS WAS THE FIRST POSTMASTER WHEN THE POST OFFICE WAS ESTABLISHED IN HIS STORE BUILDING ON JUNE 30, 1879. THIS WAS IN THE ICEBURG COMMUNITY. JULIETTE RECIEVED ITS NAME FROM THE ENGINEER THAT WAS BUILDING THE RAILROAD. IT WAS NAMED FOR HIS DAUGHTER, JULIETTE MCCRACKEN. MCCRACKENSTREET IS THE NAAME OF THE MAIN STREET RUNNING THROUGH JULIETTE TODAY. THE FIRST JULIETTE SCHOOL WAS BUILT NEAR THE EXISTING JULIETTE METHODIST CHURCH AROUND 1900 AND BURNED IN 1907 IT WAS REBUILT AND STILL STANDS TODAY. IT IS UNSAFE TO GO IN AND IS FALLING APART. THE SCHOOL WAS CLOSED IN 1943 AND FROM THAT TIME ON THE LOCAL KIDS RODE THE BUS TO FORSYTH. EAST JULIETTE HAD ITS OWN SCHOOL COMPLETE WITH A GYMNASIUM THAT RUN THROUGH THE NINTH GRADE FROM THERE THEY RODE THE BUS TO GRAY, WHICH IS THE COUNTY SEAT OF JONES CO. JULIETTE. G Virginia Crilley
Juliette (being a community on both sides of the river and thus in Jones and Monroe) was once a Mill Town, I have been told. It would be interesting to collect stories of the Mill and the little community that was around it, ie. church, school, stores. Do you have anything to share? When was the Mill in operation and when did it close? Virginia Crilley
Is anyone researching this Milner Family.... Rev. Milner was a Baptist preacher and The History of Jones County relates that "His daughter, Mary Parks MILNER married Major John Francis TUFTS. She gave the land for the Baptist church and shared most of the expense of building it, donating a large Bible for the pulpit." Which church would that be today? MILNER CEMETERY JONES CO., GA Located near old Blountsville about ½ mile to right of road leading to Lake and 10 miles north of Haddock, GA. Rev. Benjamin Milner b. 1772 d. 1828 Penelope Milner, wife of Rev. Benj. Milner b. Aug 1773 d. 1845 Laura Dodd, dau. Of John & Martha Milner Blackburn No dates. Virginia Crilley
http://www.gbgm-umc.org/pittschapel/index.html This page hasn't been updated recently, but it does give information about the current church and also where it is located..... northeast of Macon (but in Jones County)... I'm hoping we might be able to get more history of these early church members --- and also more info about the Cemetery. I'm not sure if the cemetery is mainly for Pitts family members or for all church families. http://oldcapitol.gcsu.edu/Jones/mainpage.asp Earl Colvin has a listing, but it is a very small one.... and he stated many unmarked graves. Does anyone know more about this church and its early founders? Copied with permission from "History of Jones Co., GA," by Carolyn White Williams The first record of this church dates back to October 13, 1860, when 3 3/4 acres of land was purchased from James Wells for the purpose of erecting a Methodist Episcopal Church. The consideration for this amll tract of land was $130.00. Upon it was erected the largest and finest church of that time in Jones County. This church located at Cross Roads in the souther part of the couty was named Pitts Chapel for Peyton T. Pitts, Sr. who built it of his own means, and who was its main support until his death on July 1, 1855. Provisions for domestic and foreign missions and a sum sufficient for needed repairs of the church were made by Mr. Pitts in hiw will executed September 10, 1880. The frame building is of choice material and shows the skill and workmanship of the negro builder, Owen Bostic. When completed this house was valued at $2,000.00. The first Trustees of the church were Payton T. Pitts, Sr., Thomas J. Stewart, Albert O. Blanks, Washington Kelly and Giles Griswold. Pitts Chapel formed an important part of the Clinton Circuit until 1918. About that time it was transferred from the Oxford District, North Georgia conference to the Macon District, South Georgia Conference, to become a part of the Cross Keys Circuit. In 1884 116 persons formed the membership, some of whome were: Peyton T. Pitts, Sr. James W. Slocumb Peyton Griswold Crowell Woolfork Ellen Henderson Mary Martin Mary Gibson Thomas J. Stewart Lizzie R. Stubbs Elizabeth James Jane Henderson Washington Kelly Virginia Crilley
