    1. [GAJONES] Carolyn Williams is ill
    2. Crilley
    3. I just spoke on the phone with Carolyn William's daughter about using parts of the Jones County book on-line. She's going to talk with her sister and thinks there will not be a problem and I'll call her back tomorrow morning. However, wanted to pass along that her mother who is 100 1/2 is quite ill with the flu. They have her on antibiotics, and unfortunately she isn't as clear in her mind as she was a few weeks ago. Just wanted all of us to be thinking and praying for the family today. She also mentioned that she is clearing out her mother's home and is saving all the information on Jones County for a young man named Bill Bragg who evidently has done quite a bit of work on the Griswold family and also the CSA in Jones County. Does anyone know him? Don't suppose he's on-line. It would be great to team up with him...so if anyone can contact him, please do so. Virginia

    2. Crilley
    3. Could the person who talked to Carolyn William's daughter, please send me privately the telephone # and the daughter's name ... Since she has no books, I thought I'd just call and talk to her about putting some of the information about the churches and cemeteries on-line.... If I get permission, then I'll be looking for some typists, as I don't have access to the book. Thanks... Virginia

    1. [GAJONES] Re: A DIFFERENT SHADE OF GRAY
    2. It is so exciting to see this surge of activity on the list. Thought it would be an ideal time to reintroduce myself and to elicit the help of avid researchers. My name is Sylvia Ryce Cornell. I am the gr gr granddaughter of James Madison GRAY, one of the founding fathers. I have picked up the family torch to develop a comprehensive history of our family and other early African-American families. James Madison GRAY never married, but he fathered several children by one (possibly more) of his slaves. His will names my gr grandfather James Seaman GRAY (1850-1929) and his cook, Queen Farler, as his only beneficiaries with the exception of Mercer University. According to the customs of that time, they are not identified as relatives, but as domestic servants. Both Queen FARLER and James Seaman GRAY, however, appear in the 1870 census as members of his household. Queen's surname on the census is GRAY. The written records prior to the Civil War did not identify slaves by name, but by sex and age. That omission in census records causes a great dependence upon oral history, diaries, wills and estate inventories to extract and match the names of our ancestors. The Williams book has been helpful in tracing our white antecedents and identifying names and sites that form my family legacy and those of other descendants of slaves. Earlier last year, I did look ups for several members of this list and the GA-L. We are fortunate that most of my kin are buried in a family cemetery located on BLOUNT property in Haddock. We have a formal organization, Jones County Legacy, Inc., that has grown in scope and activity over the past three years. Any assistance from fellow members in the form of diaries, oral histories, estate inventories would be appreciated. You may contact me, via the list or direct email, and I will forward any materials or sources to the appropriate individual. Sylvia Ryce Cornell Researching: GRAY, BLOUNT, LESTER, HUTCHINGS, BARFIELD, BLACK, EARLY, ADAMS We would also appreciate hearing from any of the descendants of Roland T. Ross. He was the Ordinary Court Judge who served as James M. Gray's Executor and played a role in the disposition of many legacies of that period. 1. [GAJONES] RE: Anderson Comer of Jones Co, GA
    2. David V. Clinard
    3. Carolyn, I tried to find info on this ancestor. The following is quoted from the History of Jones County by Carolyn White Williams. Hope it helps: Page 385 "Samuel Comer, direct ancestor of the Comers who settled in the South just after the Revolutionary War, was born in Lunenburg Co., Va. He was the son of John Comer who died in 1767. Samuel was the fourth child. He married Elizabeth Moss of New Kent Co., Va. They had four ch. They were: Rebecca, James Thomas, John Anderson and Hugh Moss Comer. There are many Comers listed in about 15 counties in Va., but we take up the ones who settled in Jones Co. Land grants were drawn by Hugh Moss Comer for his services in the Rev. War. Prior to 1796 three brothers, James, Anderson and Hugh M., all sons of Samuel and Elizabeth Moss Comer, came to Jones Co. They settled near Clinton but nearer what later became Gray. They were unmarried. James and Hugh M. had been in the Rev. War. James served longer than Hugh. Rebecca, their only sister, mar. William Clay, a young Rev. Soldier and remained in Va. She died in 1789." Page 385-386 "Anderson Comer (John Anderson) brother of James and Hugh Moss (Comer), was in Baldwin Co. before it was cut out to form Jones Co., and is also definately identified with the early history of this county. He owned lands here and also in Hancock Co. He married Maria Rymes and had one son, Anderson Comer, Jr. and two dau., one mar. Eton Pinkston, and one a Breedlove (who had sons, John and Bollin) in 1826. Anderson gave bond for $80,000 as administrator of his bro. estate. A daughter Martha Comer mar. Elbert Hutchings. (1832) (dau. of Hugh)" Page 387 "Anderson Comer married Maria Louisa Sanders, Aug. 12, 1825, Jones Co., GA. Their children: Caroline Victoria Comer, 12-12-29; John Anderson Comer, 9-26-33, mar. Hattie Wilson Towns 3.12.57 in Macon. Third child was Harriet Celestia Comer, 3-28-36 who mar. Hugh Lawson 5-31-55 in Macon. Fourth ch. was Maria Louisa 9-8-38, who mar. Paul F. Hammond 11-9-58. The first dau. Caroline mar. James F. Winter in Macon 11-17-49."

    1. [GAJONES] Free database - Cherokee Lottery
    2. Crilley
    3. Ancestry.com is providing a 10 day free database: GEORGIA CHEROKEE LAND LOTTERY, 1838 Of all the states, Georgia has the distinction of being the only one to distribute parcels of land by lottery. This database is a listing of persons allotted land in 1838 from what was considered "Cherokee Land." Located in the northeastern part of the state, over 18,500 parcels were distributed by lottery in that year. Each record of this collection contains the individual's name, residence, and county. Additionally, it provides the district and section number of the parcel of land. For researchers of early Georgian ancestors, this can be an enlightening database. Bibliography: Smith, James F. 1. [GAJONES] TOMBSTONE INSCRIPTIONS
    2. Walter Kenneth Smith
    3. It is so nice to see all the activity on the list. May I share a tip that really works great for photographing old tombstones. You'll never use chalk again. Buy a box of baking soda and a small kitchen sponge. Sprinkle soda on the inscription and wipe away with the flat kitchen sponge. The soda that remains in the letters photographs in sharp contrast to the stone. You will be amazed. Even letters that can't be read with the naked eye will show up well using this technique. I wish someone who lives in the area would use this technique on one of the oldest cemeteries in Jones County that dates from about 1810. There are two graves that are the raised type about four feet high. The sides and top are granite or stone 4 to 6 inches thick, each piece weighing at least 1,000 pounds. They are much larger than a normal grave. There are inscriptions but I do not remember the names - have not been there for about 30 years. Few people in the community have ever heard of this cemetery. These were prominent early settlers in Jones County and deserve to be remembered. >From Wayside, go west on Five Points Road to the intersection with Cuyler Road. These graves are in the northeast quadrant some 200 yards into the forest north of Five Points Road and about the same distance east of Cuyler Road. They are in a very dense area and probably could not be located when leaves are on the trees. I hope that someone can find them and share with the list the names of these settlers.
