    1. [GAJONES] Re: Cemetery in Hillsboro Lake Road , Glady Creek Area
    2. David V. Clinard
    3. I tried to find this cemetery this afternoon, but had only minimal success. I did find a grave site in the woods at Hadaway Road and Hillsboro Lake Road intersection. This area is probably less than 1 mile from the Jasper County line. I walked into the woods at two different directions and found a marble marker memorial that, I must believe, has been totally forgotten about - I had to beatt a path through briars to even get close enough to it to read the inscription on one side. The marble stone is about 4 feet high and is leaning a little. There was inscription on at least two sides but I could only get in a position to read one side. It read "Saphronia, wife of Jas. S. Glawson Born Aug. 17, 1847 Died Dec. 10, 1891" "Daughter" was written at the bottom of the side of the stone containing this inscription. There was writing on the opposite side of the marker but I could not get to a position where I could read it because of the heavy briars. (I wasn't equipped with a machete - that's what I would have needed, nor was I dressed in heavy protective clothing to allow me to try). The only word that I could make out on the opposite side of the marker was one word at the bottom - "Mother". Dvaid Clinard Gray, GA

    3. Jimmy, I visited the Dunn grave again today, and yes, it definitely is Nehemiah Dunn It is the only marked grave in the stone wall enclosure, although there is another obvious grave in the enclosure at the right of Nehemiah's grave. The epitaph reads To the Sacred Memory of Nehemiah Dunn died May 8, 1821. There is also a foot stone with the initials "N.D." at his grave. The grave isn't hard to find, but it is off the beaten path. Coming from Macon ( south of Jones County) head north on US 129 all the way to Gray. Turn left on GA Hwy. 11 North before crossing the railroad tracks in Gray. This highway will take you toward Bradley, Round Oak, Wayside, and Monticello. Drive north to Bradley, (about 4 miles) and turn right on Hungerford Road (paved and identified with street sign). Drive about 6 miles and you will see Shoal Creek Road on your right (gravel dirt and identified by street sign). Immediately at your right is a well kept clearing with tall hardwood and pine tree). This is the grave site. The stone wall enclosed area is visible from the road. Coming from Eatonton (north of Jones County) head south on US Hwy 129. About 7 miles into Jones County, you will see Ellis Church Road on your left. The road straight across on your right is Damascus Church Road. The area at this intersection is known historically as Blountsville, and in fact, there are 2 or 3 official state of Georgia historic marker signs at this intersection identifying the area as the former community of Blountsville. Turn right down Damascus Church Road (dirt with some gravel and no street sign) and drive about 3 or 4 miles. The road will eventually become paved. After you top a hill on the paved part of the road you will see New Damascus Church on your right as the road makes a 90 degree curve to the left. Just a few hundred feet past the curve turn right on Shoal Creek Road (the same spot I described earlier coming from the south). The stone wall enclosure containing the Dunn grave will be visible on your right. This grave is in fact identified as Nehemiah Dunn, not Jeremiah Dunn. I got down on my knees and clearly read the inscription. David Clinard Gray, GA ----- Original Message ----- From: Jim Chesteen <[email protected]> To: David V. 1. [GAJONES] Bradley Baptist Church
    2. BRADLEY BAPTIST CHURCH The Bradley Baptist Church was organized August 18, 1891, in a meeting held in the school house at Wayside, GA. and was first known by the name of Wayside Baptist Church. Presenting their letters for church membership were Mrs. C. M. Little, William E. Whitehead and Mrs. William E. Whitehead. On these letters the three named person were constituted into a Missionary Baptist church and recognized as such when the hand and fellowship was extended to them by the Presbytery which consisted of S. A. Burney and J. C. Burton The growth of the church was slow and it was probably due to that fact that this very small band at Wayside were unable to build a house of worship. The communities of Bradley and Gray felt the need and desire for a Baptist church more centrally located and a movement was started for that purpose. On the third Sunday in June 1897 , the Wayside Baptist Church resolved to move their place of meeting from Wayside School House to Bradley, and erect a new place of worship at a cost of $800. A suitable lot at Bradley was donated July 19, 1897, by John W. Bradley. Under the leadership of Rev. W. F. Wagner, a large substantial frame house was erected that year. The dedication of the church took place on the third Sunday in October 1897. A large congregation assembled for this occasion. Rev. A. J. Moncrief, Macon, GA. preached the dedication sermon. Following the removal of the church to Bradley there was a noted increase in the church member ship. A report to the Central Association which met with Bradley Baptist Church, September 1898, showed forty-nine active members. The 1939 roll shows eighty-seven. The present Board of Deacons consisted of A. L. Harris as chairman; B. F. Winters, J. J. Glawson, A. B. Winters and B. J. Glawson. Clerk of the church is A. B. Winters. Other clerks since organization are; W. H. Whitehead, 1891-1898; M. H. Mullikin, 1897-1904; J. H. C. Ethridge, 1905-1906; B. F. Winters, 1907-1930; A. B. Winters, 1930- __. The ministers have been; John C. Burton, 1891-1892; E. W. Sammons, 1893-1894, 1900-1904; W. F. Wagner 1895-1898; S. Emmett Stephens, 1899; G. W. Thorpe 1904-1909; A. F. Sellars, 1910; J. P. Lee, Z. T. Weaver, Rev. Hulme, J. J. Winburn, C. D. McDaniel, Rev. Carriion, J. J. Bennette and John Fred Eden , Jr., Rev. Johnson, Rev. Batts. Early members were: Mrs. C. M. Little, Mr. and Mrs. William E. Whitehead, Mr. and Mrs. ML Mullkin, Mrs. Allie Childs, Ella Green, Mr. and Mrs. J. Walker, w. W. Brown, James Bryant, W. L. Hadaway, Minnie Bryant, Mamie D. Whitehead, J. J. Glawson J. M. Winters, W. P. Winters, H. J. Wheeler, Mrs. J. M. Winters, H. J. Winters, J. H. Burney, Mittie Mulligan, Addie Winters, Willie Perry, Joe Bradley, Mrs. WP Winters, Emma Glawson, Cassie Whitehead, Mark C. Greene and W. F. Wagner. The first and only record book used by the church is a gift from Mrs. C. M. Little. The Bradley Baptist is the first and only church at Bradley. The building and nearby cemetery are well kept. In the cemetery rest loyal and faithful Jones County citizens.

    2. Walter Kenneth Smith
    3. Joyce McMurray's nice posting of wills from "Georgia Pioneers" included the will of the father of a prominent Jones County resident of the Civil War period, that of Thomas Bazemore, RW Soldier. It names son Thomas Jeferson. There may be members of the list who would be interested in the location of Thomas Jefferson Bazemore's grave site. He is buried in a little known family cemetery located in the Hitchiti Experimental Forest just east of Wayside, Ga. Marked graves include: T. J. Bazemore (Confederate Monument) CO A 32 GA INF CSA Mrs. Elizabeth wife of T. J. Bazemore Born Nov 8, 1846 Died Nov 8, 1907 John P. Smith Husband of Mattie Ross Born Sept 15, 1853 Married Jan. 31, 1875 Died Aug. 20, 1895 Several slabs marked: Infant Daughter of T. J. and Elizabeth Bazemore Countless unmarked graves, many thought to be slaves of this family. Moses Smith who died about 1825 and possibly Jeremiah Smith, his brother, who also died about the same time are buried here as well as Jeremiah Griffin Smith, son of Moses Smith. Elizabeth Smith Bazemore and John P. Smith are children of Jeremiah Griffin and Bethana Morris Smith, grandchildren of Moses and Mariah Smith. This cemetery is located at the old home site dating from about 1807. The Forest Service has been kind enough to clear a foot trail to this cemetery. From Wayside follow Five Points Road to the intersection with Cuyler Road. Turn right (North) on Cuyler Road and go approximately two miles. After passing the gate to the Hitchiti Experimental Forest continue for 3/10 mile to a Forest Service sign on the right that reads "Foot Traffic Welcome." There is a cleared trail directly to the cemetery several hundred yards into the forest. The home site is located about 50 yards West of the sign on the right on a bluff no more than 25 feet from the road. I will be happy to share extensive research on this Smith family from the line of Major Lawrence Smith of England and Gloucester County, Va. (1629 - 1700) who arrived in Virginia in 1652. 3. I just spoke with Mrs. Hambrick, Carolyn William's daughter, and am glad to report that she is doing much better today. She also gave us permission to put on-line the Cemeteries and also the Church History information that was in her book. I don't actually have a book, so I'm sort of at a loss to know exactly what this is going to be, but hope that some of you who do own the book would be willing to type up some of this information and send it to the List. We don't want to duplicate efforts, so if you are willing to do some typing, why don't you send to the List what you would be willing to work on, i.e. the specific cemeteries or churches. That way, everyone would know that each other was doing. I can pick them up straight from the List, and put them on-line in the Jones County Archives. Then John can Link to them on the Jones County Page itself.... Thanks....and I welcome your suggestions about how to go about this... Virginia

    1. [GAJONES] The Wayside Presbyterian Church, Jones County
    2. The seeds of the Wayside Presbyterian Church were planted when the Wayside Community Sunday School was organized in March 1921, at the inspiration of Miss Maud Childs; with the schoolhouse as a meeting place. In the fall of the same year a series of evangelistic services were held by the Reverend John Goff, evangelist from the Macon Presbytery. In December the Presbytery organized a church with four members. Messrs. E. M. and H. B. David, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Marquess, Reverend John Goff and Reverend Doctor R. E. Douglas, pastor of the First Presbytery Church, Macon had charge of the organization services; Messrs. E. M. and H. B. Davis were appointed trustees, and ordained deacons, Mr. W. H. Marquess was elected and ordained elder, and Mrs. W. H. Marquess, pianist. Plans for a church building were soon being made, a lot was given by a devoted member, Mr. Dorf. Barfield, plans were gratis by Mr. Elliott Dunwody, a Macon Architect and through the influence of Mr. Goff and Dr. Douglas a thousand dollars was given by the Assembly Home Mission, this amount was more than doubled by resident of Jones County and Macon and friends of various denominations, the building was dedicate in May 1923. In the meantime a manse had been built, this being entirely financed by E. M. Davis, Sr. The Reverend E. B. Witherspoon had arrived in May 1922 and under his leadership the membership grew to thirty or more. Mrs. Witherspoon organized a Woman's Auxiliary in June 1922 which has continued to function efficiently after the happy start which she gave it. Following Mrs. Witherspoon's death in June 1023, Mr. Witherspoon left, and the church was pastor less until January 1924, when the Reverend George R. Ratchford took charge, in the summer of 1925, when he accepted another call. During the period when the church was pastor less the pulpit was often filled by Reverend Goff and by the Men's Evangelistic Club of Macon. In December 1925, Reverend F. E. Manning accepted the call of the Wayside Church, he proved to be a wonderful Spiritual guide, organizer and friend. In the fall of 1926 the Church voted to divide the pastor's time with Liberty Community, about nine miles from Wayside. A Sunday School was organized there and in September 19297, Liberty Presbyterian Church with Reverend J. W. Smith as the principal factor in organizing this. This Church was soon moved to Caney Creek Community, this being a better location, the name was changed to New Liberty Presbyterian Church. For a short time the services were held in the Caney Creek schoolhouse; however the building was soon bought and remodeled, the work was superintended by Doctor Gillian. Under Mr. Manning's enthusiastic leadership being assisted by his splendid and beloved wife who was an Assembly Training School graduate, the church continued to grow. In August 1933, it was decided to make an exchange of pastors for the period of eight months, beginning with Oct. 1, 1933. The change was made between Reverend C. L. Landrum and Reverend F. E. Manning; Reverend Manning going to Kenly, N.C. and Reverend Landrum to Wayside. In October 1933, Reverend Landrum became pastor of the Wayside Church for eight months, he was the Spiritual guide and leader and through his earnest efforts and those of his efficient and beloved wife, the work prospered. Reverend F. E. Manning returned Jun 1, 1934, and was with us until the last of August 1934, when he accepted another call. In April 1935, Reverend J. M. Davis accepted the call of the Wayside Church. In 1942 he went to the Army as a chaplain. Miss Alva Byrd was a home mission worker from Ilah, GA. J. R. Rogers of Cincinnati, Ohio contributed substantially for years to the support of this church. E. McCall Davis was also a loyal supporter.
