Hello All! This past summer I visited the middle Georgia area to do some research. I also visited Bibb, Jones, and Twiggs also. Found a lot of tidbits also that I would like to share with you. I am not responsible for any errors in the information. Please as always, remember to verify it yourself. There will probably be more than one email. Watch the subject line for each section. Please let me know if this is helpful by sharing any leads you have found on the Twiggs list. If not I will not take the time to do it. Please do not ask for further information, I am typing all that I have. Thanks. These abstracts were copied at the Jones County Courthouse in Gray Ga. Lots of counties are listed so use your find featureā¦. Enjoy! Can anyone tell me where I could write to see if there is a will for Leonard Carlton in Jones County, Ga. between 1825 and 1830? Jill Hornung
I can't help you with the will book verification, but your ancestor does appear in the Jones County 1820 census and is listed as over 45 years old at time of census. Jesse Spear was probably the son of Lewis Spear. Jesse was born about 1802 in Georgia and died around 1866 in Jasper County, Georgia. He was captain of Georgia Militia District 364 between 1824 and 1841. Jesse Spear married Isabella Coursey on December 28, 1824 in Jasper County. Isabel was born about 1805 probably in South Carolina and died February 18, 1884 in Jasper County. Jesse and Isabella Spear lived in southwest Jasper County south of Gladesville near the Jones County line. Some early neighbors mentioned in an 1828 deed included Gatewood Dunn, William Taylor, Henry Head, Jeptha Alford, Frances N. Taylor, and Henry and Seaborn Jones. Another deed in 1855 mentions John F. Weathersby, Frances N. Taylor, Michael M. Toland, William Barclay, Amy Mostello, and James McClenden. When the Jesse Spear land was sold in 1884, their property adjoined the lands of Williamson P. Middlebrooks, Brown Sanders, Patience E. Toland, and David M. Langston. Jesse Spear c1802- c1866 Isabella Coursey c1805-Feb. 18, 1884 children Lewis W. Thought some might like to know how to search the NARA. The following was copied from the Ancestry.Com daily newsletter. Happy hunting, Pat <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> ========================================================== I frequently hear from readers that they would like to check to see if the National Archives has anything about their ancestors. Many say that they are intimidated by the volume of what might be there, or by the bureaucracy involved with requesting copies of records. Another e-mail arrived this week from a reader who would like to help a friend overseas to access and use the National Archives. Let me tell you that the National Archives is a great place to find materials and that they are easy to work with! In "Along Those Lines . . . " this week, let's discuss the National Archives of the United States and the tremendous resources at their Web site that can help you best use their resources. BACKGROUND The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is the repository for many of the historical treasures of the United States. Besides the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights are many, many documents of our national history. These include materials such as: military and service records for the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War, the Spanish American War, and World War I; many ships' passenger arrival records; some immigration and naturalization records; records from the Freedman's Savings and Trust Company and other records of interest to African American researchers; microfilm of the decennial Federal census records from 1790 through 1920 (minus almost all of 1890); Dawes Commission records and other records relating to Native American research; and a variety of other perhaps less common documents that may help you with your genealogical research. Genealogists and family historians are the most numerous of the users of NARA's resources. NARA has therefore compiled a Genealogy Page at their Web site, at http://www.nara.gov/genealogy, which contains an excellent collection of information of special interest to family history researchers. These include lists of free pamphlets and publications for sale that will help you determine what materials exist, where they are located, in what format they can be found (original vs. microform), and how to purchase any microform materials you might want to own. In order to access NARA materials most efficiently, you need to know what NARA has and how to obtain copies. Your best starting point is at the NARA Web site at http://search.nara.gov. Here you will see tabs across the top of the Web page and a click on a tab takes you to a whole category of information. The "Research Room" tab is where you want to go first. THE ONLINE RESEARCH ROOM The "Research Room" area is one of the genealogist's best resources for information at NARA. Did you know that there is more than one NARA facility? Many people think only of the building in Washington, DC. However, there also 13 regional NARA sites, as well as the presidential libraries. If you visit http://www.nara.gov/regional/nrmenu.html, you will find a list of all the sites, a general description of the materials held there, a Web address for each location with driving directions and hours, an e-mail address and a telephone number. Make certain that you know the correct place to contact or to visit for the records you seek. Different records are stored at different locations. RECORD GROUPS To effectively locate materials held by NARA, you should understand a little about record groups. Record groups are categories of like materials A description of the record group concept at NARA can be found at http://www.nara.gov/research/tools/rgconcpt.html. A full catalog of record groups, their number, contents and location can also be found at http://www.nara.gov/research/findaids/abc/part_a.html (please note the underscore character between part and a in the address). If you take the time to review the lists of record groups, you will be amazed at the range of materials encompassed by the NARA holdings. PUBLICATIONS NARA has a wide array of publications describing its holdings. Check their descriptions at http://www.nara.gov/publications/pubindex.html. A specific Web page containing aids for family historians can be found at http://www.nara.gov/publications/genihome.html. OBTAINING COPIES/USING THE RIGHT FORMS TO REQUEST THEM Most important, however, to those of us who wish to obtain copies of specific records for our ancestors from NARA is the Web page, http://www.nara.gov/research/ordering/ordrfrms.html. This page contains information about the six types of records most requested by genealogists and the NARA forms required to obtain copies of those records. The record types and the forms required are: - Military service and pension records in the National Archives Building in Washington, DC (NATF Form 80) - Military service records in the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis, MO (Standard Form 180) - Ship passenger arrival records (NATF Form 81) - Census records (NATF Form 82) - Eastern Cherokee land application records (NATF Form 83) - Land entry files (NATF Form 84) Information regarding how the forms can be easily obtained can also be found on this Web page. (Form 180 can be obtained from a Web site; all others can be requested by standard mail or e-mail by following instructions provided on the Web page.) ONLINE SEARCH FACILITIES NARA has online search facilities at its site. Click on the 'Search' tab at the top of most screens at its Web site, or enter http://search.nara.gov in your Web browser program. Once you understand what a record group is, you may want to try a search of NARA's online catalog for records of interest to you. Here you can search both NARA's Web pages and their Web-based databases. Another online search facility is NAIL (the National Archival Information Locator), a prototype of the database ultimately intended to contain an index of all NARA's holdings. Some materials are there already, including text, maps, motion picture, sound and other materials. Some of these materials have been digitized and are available as part of the search results, serving as examples of what is available. As an example, starting to use NAIL at http://www.nara.gov/nara/searchnail.html, I used the NAIL Standard Search and entered the surname Abercrombie. The search results yielded some Selective Service System Registration Cards for several Abercrombies, some criminal defendant cases for people of this surname in the 1880s and 1890s, and some Dawes enrollment records for Native Americans from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Commissioner to the Five Civilized Tribes. (NOTE: There are representative records from many areas of NARA but certainly not everything from NARA is represented and indexed in NAIL.) NAIL also provides a search of microfilm publications. For example, I submitted a search for the words 'post' and 'office' in hopes of locating microfilm records of old post offices. Sure enough, using NAIL I located four rolls of NARA's microfilm publications that contain information concerning post offices. ASKING QUESTIONS VIA E-MAIL Finally, if you have searched the extensive NARA Web site and checked the catalogs and still have questions, you can contact NARA electronically. Go to their Web page at http://www.nara.gov/nara/mail.html# inquire and read the instructions for sending e-mail to NARA. Make sure you use the correct E-mail address for the right topic. Please be patient. You will find that the people at NARA are responsive and helpful but they do have a lot of e-mail inquiries. SUMMARY As you can see, NARA is a very big place with a tremendous volume of historical records about the United States and about its citizens. I will admit that it can seem overwhelming for family history researchers, and that it might be a challenge to locate specific records there. The key here, as in all other effective research, is in your advance preparation. Obtaining free pamphlets and purchasing publications about NARA's resources is an excellent starting point. Invest some time in becoming familiar with what types of records you might find at the various NARA sites. Spend an enjoyable hour or two exploring the NARA Web pages mentioned above and others you encounter along the way. Experiment with NARA's online search facilities. Determine (and order) the forms you need to request copies of records of your ancestors. And finally, ask those still unanswered questions via the e-mail query facility. The quantity and quality of the materials at NARA can be invaluable to your genealogical research. I hope you will invest the time to learn how to use their resources and achieve some new successes in your research there, whether by mail or by visiting the correct location to work with documents in person.
Joe, Falling Creek is a watercourse running thru Jones County from its northern line with Jasper County, and courses south-southwest until it empties into the Ocmulgee River near the Dames Ferry site. I'm not sure if there was a military district called Falling Creek or not, perhaps others on this list can help here. However, after looking at the 1811 Jones County Tax Digest, many names listed in Captain C.B. Harrison's District identifies land locations as being in the Falling Creek section. It appears that all lands in the 1811 digest were identified by the major water course that the property was located on or near. Other Jones County Posters: Can you help Joe? William Q. Coulter was the son of William Coulter and probably Sarah Martin of Jones County, Georgia. The younger William was probably the grandson of Jesse Coulter of Green County, Georgia later became Hancock County. William Q. Coulter was born about 1824 in Georgia and died in Jones County, Georgia between 1855 and 1860. William married Elizabeth Bradley on November 19, 1844 in Jones County. She was the daughter of Dennis Bradley and Mary Hodges. Elizabeth was born about 1827 and died August 10, 1898 in Jones County. Bryant Funderburk was posibly the son of John Funderburk (R.S.) and his second wife, who lived in Jones and Monroe Counties between 1815 and 1830. Or he may have been the son of Henry Funderburg of Newton County, Georgia. Bryant was born in Lancaster County, South Carolina on March 29, 1811. By 1816 the family had moved to Georgia. Bryant married Jane H. Love in Jones County, Georgia on March 22, 1832. She was the daughter of Mary (?) Love. Bryant was a farmer; However, he was elected and became the Jones County Tax Receiver from Janary 28, 1848 to January 31, 1854. He was elected and became the Jones County Sheriff from January 10, 1854 until his death on September 13, 1854. Jane H. Love was born on August 8, 1808 and died in Jones County, Georgia on May 2, 1873. It is possible that Bryant and Jane Funderburk were buried in the cemetery now known as the Ben Woodall Cemetery near Wayside, Georgia. The Bryant Funderburk property was sold to Francis Haskell. My g2gfather, Thomas S. Jordan, was born on 3 January, 1832 in Macon, Bibb county, Georgia (according to his obit). Both of his parents were born in GA (according to his later census). I have no information about his life between 1832 and 1847. In 1847, he began apprenticeship as a printer in "the Advertiser" office (this is from his newspaper obit in Ashland, AL - I am assuming that this means either the "Advertiser" newspaper in Montgomery, AL, or in Forsyth, GA). I can not find him on the 1850 census. In 1852, he was foreman of the job office that printed the Code of Alabama (I assume this was located in Montgomery, AL). On the 10th of October, 1859, at Wedowee, Alabama, he married Mary Creel who was born in Carroll county, GA; she was the daughter of Jordan Creel (a descendant of John Creel of VA) and Mary(Polly) White, both of Carroll county. In the 1860 Randolph Co., AL, census , T.G.W. Jourdan (28 yrs, male, printer, born in GA, married within the yr), Mary Jourdan (22 yrs, female, HW, born in GA, married within the yr), and Cinthia Jourdan (38 yrs, female, HW, born in SC) are listed at Wedowee, Dwelling 17. Thomas G.W. Jordan married Cynthia SMITH in Harris County, GA, July 14, 1853. Thomas S. Jordan and Mary Creel married in 1859. Apparently, the man listed in the Randolph county census is Thomas S., not Thomas G. W. On July 21, 1860, Thomas and Mary's first son, Joseph Wiley Jordan, was born in Randolph county, AL. This son later practiced medicine in Ashland, Clay county, Alabama until his death in 1951. He also was elected to serve in the state legislature in 1930s, and was associated with newspapers. In 1862, a second son, William Dotson Jordan, was born to Thomas and Mary. They also "adopted" a daughter, Mary Dyson, during this period, who m. Robert L. Thurman in 1893. Thomas was a courier for the Confederacy between West Point, GA and Talladega, AL during the Civil War. I can not find him on a muster roll. After the war, he farmed for a while near Opelika, AL, then worked as a printer until starting his own newspaper, The Opelika Reformer. In 1876, he moved from Opelika to Coosa county, AL, where he and his sons published The Coosa News. In 1878, he moved to Ashland, AL, in Clay county, where he began publishing another newspaper. At 9:15 PM, 6 May, 1894. Thomas S. Jordan died in Ashland, AL. He had been a Baptist, a Mason (he had a Mason's funeral), and he was active in politics. I can find no trace of his birth family. Any assistance would be much appreciated!! Carol C-H <[email protected]>
We're continuing to work on the typing of the Jones Co Cemeteries from Carolyn William's book. Several of you are working very hard on this, and I'm trying to keep up by putting them on-line. Have a question... Where is Dames Ferry? There is a Dames Cemetery and that is the location given. Virginia

Hello All, Haven't forgot about the list, been very busy. Today I called the Tax Office in Twiggs County. I was able to pinpoint the lot number that my OBEDIAH EVANS b abt 1817 owned in 1860. Lot #90. Someone gave me this info a few months back. They were able to look up the lot number on an old 1892 District map and gave me some of the previous owners names. The land was located between Old Marion Rd. and Seymonds Gaskins Rd. in Twiggs co. The land 272 acres was purchased in 1990 from a Gary and Charlotte Prim (property is known as Barksdale Estate). They purchased it from James Emery Corporation who purchased it from William Howard Barkside in 1937. Barkside purchased it from MORRIS BURGESS in 1932. Unfortunately, couldn't go back any further without knowing when Morris Burgess could have purchased it. The Tax Office needs an approximate date. Books that old are in 10 year increments. My question is this: Does anyone have this MORRIS BURGESS? or any BURGESS for Twiggs, Jones or Wilkinson? The land has been mined. Does anyone have any history on the Kaolin Mining Industry in Twiggs County? When did they begin mining there? I would also like some History on Camp Wheeler. When was it started? How or who would I contact about civilian employees that worked there? My father worked at Camp Wheeler in the 1950's. He is deceased. He had a son that was killed with a grenade at Camp Wheeler. He was about ten years old and was playing with some friends. Some of the older Twiggs residents might rememeber the accident. It was publicezed in the Macon Paper. Thanks......maybe this will get some chat going. We have been to quiet on this list lately. LOL Sincerely, pat
