    1. [GAJONES] Juliette

    3. Copied with Permission from History of Jones Co., Ga by Carolyn White Williams Written by Alline Jarrell (typed for us by Barbara S.) EAST JULIETTE (GLOVER) The topography of the land in the section of East Juliette is hilly and rolling. In about 1825 when the Creek Indians were pushed across the Ocmulgee River, white settlers moved in where the famous Indian trail Horse-Path crossed, some settling on the east side in Jones County and some on the west side in Monroe county. For many years a ferry was used to cross this river, until a toll bridge was built. It is said that Mike DENNIS erected the first gristmill at Juliette. East Juliette, located on the Ocmulgee River in northwestern corner of Jones County was first called Glovers Mill until about 1925 when the post offices of Juliette on the west side of the river in Monroe county and Glovers Mill on the west were consolidated. It was when the Southern railroad was built that the little settlement became known as Juliette, and tradition says that the name was in honor of the first white woman to cross the river to make her home on the west side. Another story states that someone suggested that the two settlements, one on the east side and one on the west side be known as Romeo and Juliette. In 1872 Nathaniel GLOVER bought a mill from West SMITH, a native and builder of the mill. GLOVER set up a sawmill and cut lumber to build a store. Later he cut, molded and burned the brick with which to build the factory. In 1898, a log dam was constructed on the river to furnish power with which to run the textile mill and a gin. After Nat GLOVERs death, his two sons came into possession of the property. These sons were Jack and Dr. WP. GLOVER. Jack was drowned and Dr. W.P. GLOVER became owner and controlled the entire estate. Dr. GLOVER gave up his practice to supervise the mill which was more profitable. He was a shrewd businessman and accumulated a fortune; however he was outwitted by a business deal and lost controlling interest in the businesses. He sold out and the mill fell into other hands. In 1898 a church was organized and a building erected to serve as a meetinghouse and a school house. It was thus used until 1915 or 1916 when it burned. Then a separate school credited to John N. BIRCH of the Juliette Milling Co. was built and playgound equipment installed. J. Neville BIRCH followed in the footsteps of his father, by helping in the making of a new school in 1939. Across from the old school, an interdenominational church was built by the Juliette Milling Co. It is used mostly by the Missionary Baptists and the Primitive Baptists, but at times it has been used by other denominations. Rev. MINTER served the church for 20 years. Elder E.J. MADDOX of Chester served as a Primitive Baptist preacher for 18 years. The population of East Juliette is about 400 (c1957). On the west side of the river in Monroe county, about 250. This has been a rather isolated community, but now has two paved roads leading out and is easily accessible. Virginia

    3. Hi ~~ I read with interest the following. For three generations, I have James Dawson Cook's. The first being born October 28, 1876 in Clinton, Jones Co., GA. I've not been able to connect any Dawson but it does my heart good to see the name was in Jones Co. and, quite possibly, will end up being a maternal grandmother's maiden name. Here is my list of family names in Jones Co. All my fathers ancestors passed through Jones Co. Many are brick walls. However, I did find a number of them came from the Abbeville, SC area. If anyone can connect to the following Jones Co. families, would appreciate hearing from you. 3. Yes, Virginia, I went to the dedication and saw a lot of the fine people I know from Jones County. I also met one or two of John Childs Sr. decendants who do not live here. One was Childs Ford who has also responded to your message. I also have a couple of digital pictures of the ceremony and a picture of the stone that was placed and dedicated. The dedication was done by the DAR with participation of the SAR. Boys Scout Troup 21 of Macon also did a great job cleaning up the cemetery and access paths to the cemetery. 3. Hi All, I just joined this list, hoping as do all of us, to find some answers to some very perplexing questions. I am researching the ASHLEY surname and while trying to run down some census reports for the years 1800-1840 in Hancock County, the microfilm was very difficult to read, but there was a notation that indicated Jones County which perplexed me immensely. Present day Baldwin County sits between the two counties of Hancock and Jones so am I safe in assuming that at one time, this was all one large area? I would be very grateful to anyone who has access to a census reference book that would search for the Ashley surname for me in the time frame 1800-1840 to see what households & composition were listed. If there are any after 1840, I would appreciate that also. I will try to reciprocate by helping you in any way I possibly can. I am very anxious to see what names there might be and if the William or John Ashley family moved out of Hancock and into Jones or if there were other family members there also. At this point of my research, I don't know if they were part of the family that moved southward into Washington & Jefferson and Wilkinson counties or part of the family that moved up into Greene & Morgan counties. Best regards, Jane Ashley Benson

    1. [GAJONES] Jesse Spear family
    2. Gene Funderburk
    3. Jesse Spear was probably the son of Lewis Spear. Jesse was born about 1802 in Georgia and died around 1866 in Jasper County, Georgia. He was captain of Georgia Militia District 364 between 1824 and 1841. Jesse Spear married Isabella Coursey on December 28, 1824 in Jasper County. Isabel was born about 1805 probably in South Carolina and died February 18, 1884 in Jasper County. This Spear family has a family tradition having been told of an Indian heritage. The only facts I have found shows Isabella Coursey Spear, the wife of Jesse, listed in the 1860 census as a person of color and could not read nor write. Jesse and Isabella Spear lived in southwest Jasper County south of Gladesville near the Jones County line. Some early neighbors mentioned in an 1828 deed included Gatewood Dunn, William Taylor, Henry Head, Jeptha Alford, Frances N. Taylor, and Henry and Seaborn Jones. Another deed in 1855 mentions John F. Weathersby, Frances N. Taylor, Michael M. Toland, William Barclay, Amy Mostello, and James McClenden. When the Jesse Spear land was sold in 1884, their property adjoined the lands of Williamson P. Middlebrooks, Brown Sanders, Patience E. Toland, and David M. Langston. The Jesse Spear family had a 100 acre farm just east of Atlanta during the 1860s. They were farming this land when Sherman marched into Atlanta. The family was told to leave before/during the battle. Jesse Spear c1802- c1866 Isabella Coursey c1805-Feb. 18, 1884 children Lewis W. Marion Spear married Sarah "Sallie" Lavonia Marsh the daughter of James William Marsh and Lucinda H. Lynch on July 24, 1869 in Jasper County. Sallie was born March 31, 1852 in Jones County, Georgia and died June 28, 1926 in Griffin, Spalding County, Georgia. In later years, Marion worked in the cotton mill in Juliette, Georgia, then in the cotton mill in Griffin, Georgia. Sallie took care of a boarding house owned by the cotton mill in Griffin. 1. [GAJONES] Eli Clark
    2. Mitzi Bateman
    3. Eli Clark is listed as the head of the household on the Jones County census of 1820. There is an Eli in Burke County in 1807, and Eli is in Thomas County by 1830, so Eli's sojourn in Jones County didn't remain long. There seem to be some good historians on the list. I'm wondering if he left any traces in Jones County besides the census record. Does anyone know if Jones was a county stopping off place for those going further south? By the way, I recall going through Jones County (Gray) en route to Macon (from my childhood home in Milledgeville). Mitzi Clark Bateman in CA

    2. Kelly Hokkanen
    3. Does anyone have information about the DUNCAN family of Jones County? I saw in the will abstracts just posted today, a George Duncan Sr. (died 1853) with a son Lee Duncan. I believe this is the Lee Duncan who became the guardian of my ancestor William Jasper O'Banion in 1830s. I'm trying to figure out if the families might be related somehow. Kelly

    1. [GAJONES] BRADLEY
    2. Walter Kenneth Smith
    3. As one who spent early years in Bradley living in the Bloodworth house two doors north of the Bradley Baptist Church, I enjoyed the information on Bradley which was posted. It brings back childhood memories, one which I will share. The northbound evening train in the early 1940's stopped for passengers and mail in Bradley. The engine usually was stopped directly in front of my house at the beginning of the uphill grade heading north. By that time the cannery was no longer operating but large quantities of grease remained in drums in the old building. You guessed it. On winter evenings when it grew dark before the train ran, a liberal coating of grease would be applied for several hundred yards on both rails. I vividly remember the locomotive spinning it's wheels giving the appearance of a giant sparkler in the clear night air as hot metal flakes flew high into the air. It was a grand spectacle. And though there was much speculation as to the culprit, the mystery remains unsolved to this day. Ken Smith
