    1. [GAJONES] Jones Co Home Page
    2. John & Jan Radford
    3. Hi folks. I have made some changes on the Jones Co Home page to incorporate the new features at GenConnect. We can mow post queries, Obits, land records etc on special pages. These items can be cross searched making research a little eaiser. Also, I have tied in the GaGenWeb Archives pages. Check them out. They are pretty neat. Also, make some submissions. It all helps. I will not accept any more surname listing on the surname page after March 31, 2000. It has gotton too much to keep up with. I have seven county/parish pages and mail list to keep up with. Please submitt your surnames and queries to the query page. Your surnames then can be cross searched. This should be better. I will keep the page open for about a year to give people time to post their queries to the query page. Whenever anyone enters a query etc on these pages, the query is automatically entered on the GaJones-L mail list. So, if you have requested that you receive notice each time a query is posted, you will now receive two notices. I suggest that you go to the query page and remove your request for notification of every posting. Thanks for your participation in this project. I hopt that all of this has been of some help to you. Good luck with your research. John and Jan Radford [email protected] Baton Rouge, La

    2. David Slay
    3. Posted on: Jones County, Ga Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ga/Jones?read=764 Surname: ------------------------- Greetings: I am compiling information for a book entitled: "Bibliography of Civil War Manuscripts in the state of Georgia." This book will list and briefly describe all Civil War manuscript collections held by organizations in this state. Due to the large number of such organizations, I cannot visit them all. I need a couple of volunteers to help me with Jones County. The task involves visiting Old Clinton Historical Society, the Jarrell Plantation, and the Jones County Library to check and see if they have any unpublished Civil War era letters or diaries. After that a brief description of the item is all I need. In most cases this entire process can be completed in an hour or two. All volunteers will be credited for their work in the foreword of the book. This work will be of great importance to historians and genealogist all across the nation. If you would like to help me, please contact me. David Slay [email protected]

    1. [GAJONES] Churchwell Walker/Anne C. Coleman
    2. David Walker
    3. Hello Everyone, I am posting this to attempt to enlist those of you searching Jones Co., GA records in my more than 20 year quest to identify the parents of Churchwell Walker and Anne C. Coleman, who were married in Jasper Co., GA on 26 March 1815. They were listed in the 1820 Census of Jasper Co. and in the 1830 Census of Putnam Co., GA. I have come to believe they may never have moved but resided in that place where Putnam, Jasper and Jones Counties come together and probably were associated with people in all three counties. They never lived near either Walker or Coleman families and I suspect they may have lost one or both of their parents before the 1820 census. Churchwell is also at times listed as Church or Churchill Walker. He was born circa 1787 in NC and Anne was born circa 1789 in GA. If anyone recalls coming across any document with either of their names on it or should you come across one, I would greatly appreciate an email. Any clue might be helpful as I have been at this a lon! g time and am now confronted by a seemingly brick wall. My web site is posted below and contains a number of GA families during the same time frame. Thanks in advance for your consideration. 1. [GAJONES] Paul family
    2. Paula Griffin
    3. Posted on: Jones County, Ga Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ga/Jones?read=763 Surname: Paul, Reynolds, Allen, Stephenson ------------------------- I am looking for the family of Sara W. Paul, born about 1826. I think her father was William Paul, born about 1782 in NC. He is on the 1850 Jones County census, with second wife Mary Stephenson (married Feb. 2, 1840), and children John, born 1829, Lucy, born 1836, Mary, born 1841, Martha, born 1843, William, born 1847, and Jabey, born 1848. I think her brother was Charles Paul, also on the 1850 census, with wife Lucy, William, born 1843, and Sarah, born 1846. Sara married James M. Reynolds on Feb. 2, 1841 in Jones County, and had daughter Ann Eliza in 1848. James died in Houston County in 1853, and she remarried John J. Allen of Macon on June 3, 1853. Ann Eliza married Dr. James C. Johnson of Houston County. John and Sara had a daughter Georgia in 1855, who married Edward Coke Pearce in 1871. Is this the same William Paul?

    3. The first newspaper in Bibb County was the GEORGIA MESSENGER (estab. March 16, 1823, Ft. Hawkins > 1824, Macon, 5th Street). after passing through the hands of many owners, it was bought and merged with the GEORGIA JOURNAL of Milledgeville and titled the JOURNAL and MESSENGER. Apparently it was a weekly paper and didn't become a daily until 1868. In 1869, it was united with the TELEGRAPH. The Macon TELEGRAPH was founded in December, 1826. A small daily was also published from 1831 -1833 (1st in Macon). In 1844, a weekly paper, the REPUBLIC, was begun and continued until 1845 when it merged with the TELEGRAPH. After several more ownership changes, and merges with other papers, including the GEORGIA CITIZEN and the CONFEDERATE, interest in the MESSENGER was purchased, and merged also with the TELEGRAPH and was titled the TELEGRAPH and MESSENGER. The MESSENGER title is no longer used, but the MACON TELEGRAPH continues today even after more ownership changes... (these notes were taken from Butler, John Campbell. HISTORICAL RECORD of MACON AND CENTRAL GEORGIA, c1879, J.W. Burke CO, Macon, GA. {2nd copyright 1958 by the MACON TOWN COMMITTEE of the NATIONAL SOCIETY of the COLONIAL DAMES of AMERICA in the state of GEORGIA}, PP. 329-333. Hope this helps...no mention was made of the EAST MACON LEDGER...could it have been started after this book was written? 2. Laura: I wonder if your James Jones had any siblings. My great-grandmother, Eliza Jane Jones, was born in Jones County Georgia on 19 July 1821. She married William Crawford Newton on 12 November 1846, also in Jones County Georgia. They moved around Georgia, Alabama and maybe Florida before coming to East Texas in 1871. I have never been able to find out anything about either of their families. Any help would be appreciated. Bill Newton

Posted on: Jones County, Ga Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ga/Jones?read=762 Surname: Jones, Hicks, Mitchell ------------------------- I am looking for a James Jones that was born in 1822 or '24. He married Ellen Frances Hicks and they had 4 children. Savanah Mitchell Jones, Titus Taswell Jones, Ella Jones, and William M.? Jones. James served in the Civil War in the Ga. 2nd Cavalry Regiment Co. E. He died at Camp Morton Indiana in 1864. Ella may have married a Hammock or Hammonds. Titus and Savanah both married Mayfields. Ella, Titus and Savanah moved to Ar. in the 1890's. William lived in Atlanta. Ellen moved to AR. too. Have found Ellen and James in the Bibb Co. census. We think that Savanah's middle name Mitchell may have been a maiden name of one of her Grandmothers. We can not get back any further then James and Ellen. We have no marriage date on them. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Laura Jones
