    3. Margie, I do not normally associate the name, TERRELL, with Jefferson County, GA -- they were located a little north of Jefferson County in Oglethorpe, Greene and Wilkes. The BRASWELLS I also do not associate, normally, with Jefferson County but they may have been down there because they were tied to the FARMERS and this family was an eastern NC family, so they may well have been in Burke and Jefferson. The only Willoughby's I have were up in Pitt County, NC tied to the MOORES. The only THOMPSONS I have in the JC area were the ones down in Emanuel County, GA but they may be part of the same bunch and they supposedly came from Roberson County, NC. John R. 3. Margie, I cannot tie my DANIEL bunch to the O'DANIELS who were tied to the ERWINS of Edgefield County, SC or the Berry DANIEL clan out of Brunswick County, VA. I am still waiting on the DNA test which my cousin, Russ DANIEL, sent in the first of May. It should be back soon but things are running slow in these DNA labs, these days. Three months is not outside the realm of possibility so I may not know until after the first of August. That said, my collateral links seem to suggest that I am a descendant of the LANIER-DANIEL clan of Tyrrell and Pitt County, NC or ROGERS-DANIEL clan of Edgecombe and Martin, but I could be wrong. It really does not matter because these two are the same family -- Thomas DANIEL (1686-1749) who married Elizabeth LANIER was a brother of Simon DANIEL (1678-1763) who married Elizabeth ROGERS. However, I will not know until we get the DNA test back, will I? John R. 3. Interested in the JENNINGS line too. John Jennings COTTLE was shown on the Jefferson County Tax Digest in 1799, and in subsequent census records through 1830. By 1838, he and his wife Elizabeth had moved to Sumter County, where he died in 1842. It is believed that his mother was Delilah JENNINGS. Anyone know anything about this Jennings family? Also, if anyone recognizes this family, does anyone know what Elizabeth's surname was? Thanks everyone! 3. Thank you, Elaine, for transcribing the Jefferson Co Marriage Books and sharing them. And John, thank you for doing such a wonderful job on the website so they were easy to find. Thanks to you both, another of our little mysteries is solved: The 21 y/o niece, Sarah Newsome, living with Jesse Alexander and Emily D. Leaptrot in 1880 is Sarah E. Ryals as we suspected. On page 551 the marriage book lists A. A. Newsome and Miss S . E. Ryals 7 Oct 1875. Pam - Sarah's gr gr granddaughter Pamela Newsome Marietta Lawson - Marsh - McNorrill - Newsome - Ryals - Wimberly

    3. Well, a lot of folks from Burke and Jefferson did roll into Russell County, AL, which is right across the river from Columbus, GA. Never forget one thing about most migrations -- they moved almost dead west from their original location. I always tend to say they did not move exactly due west but somewhere along a line "south of west," because we know they all lived north of 30 degrees north latitude which makes the sun actually appear south of directly overhead at 12 noon, even in the summer. This tends to make them move more south of west than they would a lesser latitude. Before the end of the Indian Wars, even as late as the 1830's, it was tough going in states like AL and MS. I always love revisionist historians who like to say, today, these poor little Indians never harmed anybody, but that is pure hogwash. They even murdered some of my ROBINSON bunch in Wayne and Charlton Counties as late as the 1840's and these ROBINSONS were part Indian (Tuscaroras of Duplin County, NC), as the story goes. These were tough times and not for the meek and those who were looking for someone to blame for their troubles, like so many of our generation, today. I can just imagine some attorney from our generation attempting to file suit for some of the trivial things they file suits for today - they would have been thrown out of court so fast they may have ended up in a completely different county. Not to mention the tar and feathers that would probably accompany them. <grin> John R. 3. Margie, The only connection that caught my eye was the connection to the ERWIN family of Abbeville County, SC. This family was tied tot eh LAWTONS, ROBERT, TWIGGS, ALLISON and DANIELL. What I also found when looking a little deeper is the DUNCANS were tied to the GUDYLOUCHS of Albemarle County, VA. That, to me is very interesting because I think I am a GUDYLOUCH descendant through the STOCKTONS of Albemarle County, VA, who were originally from Monmouth County, NJ. The PUCKETTS that I have some information on were from Granville County, NC and another bunch in Randolph County, AL. I do not have any information they were tied to this bunch but they well could be and I do not have any information on them. I do have these PUCKETTS of Randolph County, AL tied into the DANIEL family of Brunswick County, VA (a Berry DANIEL b. ABT 1750) and they then a SMITH, PUCKETT, CAMP and ALMAND family after they get to GA. They seem to flow from VA to the Jackson County, GA area and then to AL. John R.
