Jim, There are several reason I think they may be connected, not necessarily close but connected in some way. Rev. Isaac SMITH, Colby's son, married Asneath BRANTLEY and the BRANTLEYS are all over the Benjamin DANIEL and Lucretia BURGAMY family of Washington and later, Laurens County, GA. Ann Colsby SMITH married a Thomas R. WOOD and a John WOOD was listed in the 1845 will of Ann MARSHALL (ABt 1770-1845) of Jefferson County, GA. She was the widow of Joseph MARSHALL, Sr. If you have any QUINNEY, MOYE, RAIFORDS or the like around you bunch, then I would say they were probably connected. However, the HENRYS are what caught my eye. Colby SMITH was married to a HENRY and so was Col. Nathan JOHNSTON (1738-1807) of St. Peter's Parish, Beaufort County, SC. Actually Col. HENRY was not of Beaufort District, SC until later, originally he was of Pitt County, NC and the father of Col. Amos JOHNSTON (1768-1815) of Beaufort who married Elizabeth DANIEL, d/o Josiah DANIEL and Elizabeth MAY nee TISON. The noted chronicler of eastern NC families, Coy K. JOHNSTON, Esq. of Atlanta was a descendant of Col Amos and Elizabeth Daniel JOHNSTON of Danielton, Jasper County, SC. Josiah was the younger brother of Capt. Aaron DANIEL who married Elizabeth WHITFIELD, whose mother was a WARREN. Aaron's son, Benjamin DANIEL was the boy who married Lucretia BURGAMY and lived in the part of Washington County that was later cut into Laurens County, GA. There are three families out of the Craven/Dobbs area of Eastern NC that ride together like the Three Musketeers. They are the SMITHS, the WHITFIELDS and the BRYANS. If you have any of these families in your overall bunch, you can bet your boopy these SMITHS are related...... John R. John, Colsby Smith is my fourth great-grandfather and this line has been extensively documented from his generation. Unless somebody has made a connection that I haven't seen, neither Noah nor Jordan Smith is in the Colsby Smith line. One of Colsby's sons, Micajah, had a son named David but I do not have any more info on him at the moment. Micajah was born 1786 Chatham Co., NC and married Elizabeth Duty. I am interested in the David T. Smith of Jefferson Co. since he married Frances Ross, sister to my third great-grandfather, Jonathan Ross (now you know where one of David's son's name came from). Yes, I do. Greene Berry MARSHALL was the son of a William MARSHALL and Elizabeth LEE. He was born in Richland County, SC in 1792 and died in Tuskegee, Macon County, Alabama in 1853. Greene Berry MARSHALL, married Frances COLEMAN, d/o Lindsay COLEMAN and Sarah STUBBS of Richmond County, GA. Lindsay was the brother of Eliza Ann COLEMAN who married Gen. John SCOTT (1773-1839) of Montgomery, AL. How do you have connections into this bunch? John R. Dawn, Well, I think Martha PARTIN of Crawford County, GA was his first wife and she died ABT 1850 so that matches up. Hinson QUINNEY was born ABT 1805 and his wife, Mahala MARSHALL was born 1810, so their child, Nancy, would have been born ABt 1830 and she could have married John after Martha died. Let's say ABT 1855. Have you ever gotten any more on the MARSHALLS? The PERRYS and the MARSHALLS must have been pretty close even before the marriage of John PERRY (1799-1863) to Nancy QUINNEY because John's sister Ann Perry DANIEL (1809-1861) was the co-executor along with her husband, James Lane DANIEL (1814-1857), of the will of Mahala's grandmother, Ann MARSHALL (ABT 1770-1845), widow of Joseph MARSHALL, Sr. (ABT 1765-ABT 1820) of Jefferson County, GA. I do feel that Noah SMITH of Jefferson County, GA who was married to Wylanty WAY was related in some way to Rev. Jordan SMITH or his wife, Mary GAINER, because Joseph and Rev. SMITH were living side by side in 1820 in Jefferson County, GA. Later, Rev. SMITH moved to Washington County, GA. All of these SMITHS may have also been related, in some way, to Colby SMITH and Rebecca Ann HENRY, also of Washington County, GA because I have an L. C. SMITH that married Julia R. DANIEL (b. ABT 1842) in 1859. She was the daughter of Robert W. DANIEL, my GGF, but by a different wife. In 1860, this, some say Luther (Lewis is also a possibility) C. SMITH, age 24, Noah SMITH, age 42 and Robert W. DANIEL age 51 are living side by side in Bethany, Jefferson County, GA -- actually the 83rd MD. I am still trying to find that WILCOX/WILCOXEN that married Julia R.'s sister, Mary Green DANIEL who was born ABT 1848. We know Mary was married by 1867 when her father's will was probated but I do not know what happened to either of these two girls, after 1867. I also do not know what happened to their brother, James R. DANIEL born 1850. I think he married a Sarah Julia MURPHY ABT 1871 but she and her daughter died in 1874 and I do not know what happened to him, afterwards. I think this MURPHY girl was daughter of a C. M. and G.D.A. Murphy she is buried with these Murphys in Lowry Cemetery, Jefferson County, GA. However, I do not know what happened to James R. DANIEL. John R. Syl, I really do not look at families much after 1800 because they get very difficult to track after that time frame, surname wise and given name wise. I do know the KEY family was a close family to all of this bunch, especially to the JORDANS and was basically an IOW area family. However, what you have to watch for in the Jefferson and Burke County, GA areas is KEA and KEY, they were not the same bunch, as they say. My DANIEL bunch did not get to Jefferson County, GA until the late 1840's, after a short stint in Emanuel County, GA. However, their father and mother were in Burke by 1812, according to their mother's 1846 obit. She was a LANE. All of this makes me think that they had earlier connections to Jefferson County, GA and quite possibly Emanuel County, GA which was the early stomping grounds of Abraham Sheppard LANE RS-NC (1757-1848), who I think was a cousin of my Penelope LANE (1773-1846) of Burke. My guess is -- this is all part of the Allen WARREN, Sr. (1662-1738) and Elizabeth Ann CLEMENTS of Surry County, VA. Which exact line in this family was the ancestor of your John, I do not know. We know that Hinchee WARREN (Robert, Allen, Sr.) moved to Burke and died there in 1803. John R. The RATCLIFFS were out of the Southside area -- IOW, Nansemond County, Surry and Sussex County, VA, early. They were tied to the KNIGHTS, JORDANS and WOODSONS and this set. The PORTERS would also seem to fit into this bunch. John R. Clarke Thomasville, GA ----- Original Message ----- From: "David R. Jim, Yes, there more than several sets of DANIELS in this area, some of which I can identity. All of this is by the 1820 time frame. In Washington County, GA there was the Ezekiel DANIEL set. They were part of the Northampton County, NC DANIEL family, which was part of the Thomas DANIEL family of IOW County, VA. There was also a William DANIEL and Elizabeth SKINNER family and he was of Ireland and she was from NY. A McDANIEL family is also in Washington and collateral with this Daniel-Skinner family. In Burke County, GA, there were also several sets of DANIELS, some of which were descendants of Aaron DANIEL and Betsy WHITFIELD. This is also part of the IOW clan. There is also my bunch from Greene County, NC and we are not sure who they were but my guess is they were also part of the IOW clan. In Jefferson County, GA, there were not a lot of DANIELS there, early. There were DONALDSONS but some of them later migrated to Bulloch County, GA. In Emanuel County, GA there were several sets of DANIELS or DANIEL related families. One of these was the DANIELL family out of Bogart, Oconee County, GA, quite possibly William DANIELL, Jr. who was quite prosperous in Emanuel County, GA. In Laurens, we have part of the Aaron and Betsy Whitfield DANIEL family, part of which was also in Burke. This bunch migrated south from Duplin to the Cheraw area of SC and after Aaron and Betsy died, their kids migrated to GA. Their son, Benjamin and Lucretia Burgamy DANIEL were in Laurens, formerly part of Washington County, GA. The BRANTLEYS are also collateral with this Laurens County, GA DANIEL family. There were also several DANIEL families in Richmond County, GA and some of these families later moved into Burke County, GA. There was a John and a Jeptha DANIEL that really interest me. I know that my Robert DANIEL of Burke had a brother, William DANIEL, because he is mentioned in early court orders back in Greene County, NC and a Jeptha DANIEL is also mentioned in these orders. Several names which float around my DANIEL family are JORDAN and WARREN, besides LANE which we also know is collateral. I would love to see a confirmed linage of the "Warren" DANIELS of Burke and Richmond and a linage for the Robert DANIEL of Augusta, for which the Augusta airport is named. I would more or less guess, they were probably related to my overall bunch. My best guess is the WHITFIELDS, BRYANS, WARRENS, COUNCILS, TYSONS, WOOTENS, SMITHS, ANDREWS, GARDNERS, FORTS, BYNUMS, possibly ROGERS, CASON, CANNON and this whole bunch out of Pitt, Warren, Wayne, Greene, Craven and that area of NC are probably part of my overall DANIEL bunch. I also think my Capt. Isham LANE (ABT 1730-1801) of Greene/Wayne County, NC and Levin LANE (ABT 1730-1790) of Jones County, NC were brothers and I think their father was a son of Joseph LANE, Sr. and Julian JARRELL of Edgecombe County, NC. They may even have been first cousins but it is still the same LANE bunch. Burke, Jefferson and Washington County, GA families are really a mess because these are "burned over" counties. A lot of their records are reconstructed records and they cannot be trusted, one bit. Green County, NC is also a burned over county, so we have the same problem, there. We also have much of the same problem over in SC in many counties. One might say, we have no records in these counties before the end of the CW and in that, you would be correct. This has led a lot of early researchers to "wing it" and rely on compiled genealogy, much of which we now know is incorrect, including a lot in Huxford's POWG, all of which is compiled, family provided genealogy. If one was to believe DAR applications, Capt. Aaron DANIEL (1733-ABT 1800) and Elizabeth WHITFIELD were probably the most prolific pair in history, none of which is correct. Some also list 1739 as Capt. Aaron's birth date but that is also incorrect, since he was "of age" (at least 16) in his father's 1749 will. He was also listed as being "of age" in his mother's 1752 will, so he was born at least by 1733. He was also a Captain during the RW and not an Ensign, as most list for him, because you always list their highest rank and he was a captain in Marion's Brigade, SC militia at the end of the RW. The problem we have with these DANIEL lines is many of them in the Jefferson County, GA neck of the woods (Burke, Richmond, Washington, Emanuel, Tattnall, Liberty and Laurens) descend from Thomas DANIEL of IOW County, VA, so DNA is not an option we can use to straighten them out.
