SMITH The subject of this sketch was born in Jasper county, Georgia, on the 24th day of April, 1846, and is consequently in the 47th year of his age. He was educated at Newbern, Georgia. During the war between the States, or the war of the rebellion, he enlisted under the banner of the Stars and Bars and was engaged in a number of battles. After the close of the war he came to Kentucky in the year 1867 since which time his interests have been in Hopkins county. Soon after arriving here, he engaged in teaching, his first Kentucky school being taught in Madisonville. In 1881, he was elected by the Court of Claims as Commissioner of Public Schools for Hopkins county. He served two years and while holding that position looked well to the cause of education. He is at present superintendent of the schools of Madisonville. He is a teacher of both experience and ability. He is an earnest educator and has a reputation as an instructer that any man might feel proud of. He is also a minister! in the Christian Church. (Source: Madisonville (Ky.)
