    1. 1812 militia - draft
    2. Virginia Crilley
    3. Chris Jones shared this "draft information" with me and I wanted to pass it along. If you have ancestors living in the western frontier Georgia area around 1812 -- then it is a high probability that they may have been "drafted". All men were part of the local militia, but these "drafted" would have joined the ranks of militia. I know that Camp Hope near Ft. Hawkins was one gathering point for the men, and many of the regiments went on to Ft. Darien for actual duty. At that time these counties being on the western frontier, probably were sparsely populated thus the "new division" created. We're always trying to collect 1812 pension information and hope to get some rosters on-line. If you have found someone in the 1810 census, then definitely look at the possibility of militia service. ==================== According to the Dec. 9, 1812 Georgia Journal, a new division of Georgia Militia was formed including Randolph (now Jasper), Jones, Twiggs, Pulaski, Wilkinson, Laurens and Telfair Counties. General David Adams was elected Major General and Dr. Lee, Brigadier General of the lower brigade. Every sixth man was drafted, and this included John Dominy.

Pye Redstar36@aol.com May 17, 2004, 11:11 am Eatonton Messenger, Eatonton, Ga In Memory of Mr. Henry Avant Hillsboro. GA On the 11th day of May Brother Henry Avant passed from his tabernacle of clay to receive the plaudits of them awaiting that spiritual home in the beyond. Uncle Henry, the endearing term we all so loved to call him by, in the mist of his last illness of several months, passed his 82nd birthday on the fourth of March in the year of our Lord, 1930. Uncle Henry's childhood as well as youth and manhood through a long and useful life was spent in and near the community in which he was born. His friends were numbered by the legion as nearly perhaps as many man of his simple pretentious and modest retiring nature. During or just after the civil war, he wooed and wedded Miss Susie Jones of the highly esteemed family of that name in Hillsboro. Of this union there were five children, namely Mrs. J. S. Marsh, Macon, J Avant, Hillsboro, O. A. Avant, Hillsboro, Mrs. T. R. Hattaway, Hillsboro, and H. T. Avant, Hillsboro. Each of whom survive him to mourn his loss in that fitting way suggestive of the tender solicitude manifested by them in his old ---- as decrepitide and last illness, even to death. Joining with these in ministering to his suffering was a large number of grandchildren vying with each other in giving comfort and pleasure to Grandpa. And who shall ---- the large number of kind and loving friends who joined so wholeheartedly with those loved ones in self sacrificing concern during his long illness. A loyal husband, a devoted father, he was unswerving in his adherence to his church and faithful to his Lord to whom he gave his heart and life many years before his death, since when his consuming passion was to see his children and friends saved by that grace which sweetened and made glad his own heart. While strength permitted, present at all services of his church, ready to join in songs of praise, his soul"s delight on bended knee to implore a throne of grace for the salvation of sinners. We shall miss you Uncle Henry in church and home, your happy, kindly nature, your fatherly advice, those wonderful prayers, that fellowship which we enjoyed as your pastor for so many years. We carried him to old Union Hill Church where the funeral services were conducted by the Pastor and tenderly laid him to rest by the side of the mother of his children who preceded him there by several years, which her and all those who sleep in Christ to await the resurrection morn. 1. RE: [GAELBERT] Thomas White, RWS, Family of Elbert County
    2. Robert C. Johnston, Jr.
    3. Dear Luana, Wow, what a small world, and how cool is it how things always come together in Genealogy in the strangest ways. First of all, I am most interested in that 1847 deed. I have only gone through deeds up to about 1820 looking for my ancestors. Now, about this John White and Barsheba Gunter of yours. I do not believe this John White is related to me as of yet. There were two White families living in the Vann's Creek and Ruckersville area of Elbert County after the Revolution era. Though both families had a John White and Thomas White in their lines, the rest of their families have been pretty easy to separate in records and books. The "John white" I have seen in Elbert Co. records has been a challenge for me, trying to keep them separate. My Thomas White, RWS, was said to have named his oldest son named John White after his beloved father. It is also rumored that this John White was married to a Rachel Carter, d/o Josiah Carter and Mary Anthony, on November 25, 1812 in Warren County, Georgia, but I have not yet been able to find concrete proof of the relationship as of yet. Since every White family in Georgia had to name a son "John White", there are a zillion "John White" men all over Georgia in pre-Civil War records, so it has been hard to find mine. I'll get to my point. I was in the Jasper County, Georgia courthouse recently searching for records on my Joseph White, s/o my Thomas White, RWS, and brother to the above mentioned John White who married Rachel Carter. While searching through indexes, I recorded other non-related Whites found in the "early" Jasper County record books, just in case (you never know, just like right now). In the Jasper County Record Book "General Index of Estates 1812-1841 M-Z", I found the following listing which you should find exciting: Estate of John White, dec'd Isham Gunter & Bashaba White (execs) July 31, 1823 Will (Return Book 4, page 136) 1824 Order: Letter Testamentary (Minutes Book A, page 38) 1824 Inventory & Appraisal: Warrant of Appl. (Minutes Book A, page 38) Mar. 6, 1824 Inventory & appraisal: Appraisement (Return Book 4, page 138) 1826 Annual Return (Return Book 4, page 139) 1831 Annual return (Return Book 4, page 140) This is all the documents recorded for the estate of John White, deceased, in Jasper County. There are many second and third generation Whites listed in the General Indexes of Estates, but I only recorded the ones related to me, due to so many being listed as the years progressed. I'd suggest either making a trip to the courthouse to look up heirs of your John & Bashaba White (and Gunters), or go to the new Georgia Archives in Morrow to view the estate index on microfilm. I did see a couple land records for a John White in early Deed books of Jasper County. Perhaps these belong to your John White. It is worth a look: John White, Grantor Deed Book 5, page 72-73 John White, Grantee Deed Book 2, page 214 I did not record all Whites in the Land Indexes. There were two many and time was running out. I only copied my line of Whites I could identify. You might want to check the deed books for more names you know are related to you. I hope this helps. I had wondered who this John and Bashaba White were, and I'm glad I could pass them along to you. I wish you luck on your research. God Speed! Robert C. You seem to have done quite a bit of thorough research and may already have the info from the deed I am referring to...but if not I'd be happy to provide it. Although I can't quite connect based on the info you provided, I do have a John White in my database married to Barsheba Gunter (married June 1 1803) in Elbert Co. 3. This might not help much, but in the book, "HISTORY OF JASPER COUNTY, GEORGIA", I found a list of churches. Pages, 73-95. Did you want the list of church names? I did not see the people you are looking for listed in the church section. All members are not listed, just some of the leaders and pastors. I did find on page 327, the marriage of Farrow, Finch-Jane Wray. Married 4 Aug. 1818, by Sam'l Clay, JP The only other mention of the Wray name, was a Viney Wray, on pg. 235. That name is listed with William Lynch, as a granddaughter in his will, 1 Jan 1833. The only Ray name: pg 233, Beatrice, m. in 1948, John Paul Cook Jr. Could not find Farrow or Echols any other place. Solomon Ray died in 1813 and his wife Jane Echols Ray married Tench Farrow and I am trying to find out where Jane Echols Ray or Farrow attended church. In some way the horse became frightened and began to run. Miss Hill was thrown from the buggy a short distance from where the horse became unmanageable and received severe injuries. Miss Pennington, did not escape so well. After running down the road about half a mile the horse made a sudden turn into a side road, throwing her out upon her shoulders. In the fall her collar bone was broken. Her escape from sudden death is deemed as miraculous. Miss Pennington is a daughter of Mr. W. B. R. Pennington, of Covington, and has a large circle of friends here who will read of her misfortune with regret. At last account the young ladies were resting easy and a rapid recovery is looked for. Miss Hill is also well known here, having visited in our city on a number of occasions. This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 1.6 Kb
