    1. [GAJASPER] 1700 Rations
    2. Jane Foley
    3. My thanks to this group for posting this in an effort to learn about our forefathers and foremothers. I hope you learn as much from this information that has been so generously shared by the living history group mentioned, as I have. This information was collected as a part of the research done by the 25th Continental Regiment, a living history group. The regiment re-creates an American unit from 1776 that fought in the American Revolution. THE ISSUE RATION approved by the Continental Congress appears generous. The "General Orders" issued by General George Washington state what was supposed to be issued to the Continental soldier. Subsequent orders and journal entries indicate what was actually received as time went on. In general, the soldiers' diet appears monotonous. Their diet does not appear to meet today's dietary guidelines as depicted in a comparison of the modern "food pyramid": By order of his Excellency General Washington, a Board of General Officers sat yesterday in Cambridge, and unanimously recommended the following Rations to be delivered in the manner hereby directed - Viz: Corn'd Beef and Pork, four days in a week. Salt Fish one day, and fresh Beef two days. As Milk cannot be procured during the Winter Season, the Men are to have one pound and a half of Beef, or eighteen Ounces of Pork pr. day. Half pint of Rice, or pint of Indian Meal pr Week - One Quart of Spruce Beer pr day, or nine Gallons of Molasses to one hundred Men pr week. Six pounds of Candles to one hundred Men pr week, for guards. Six Ounces of Butter, or nine Ounces of Hogs-Lard pr week. Three pints of Pease, or Beans pr man pr week, or Vegetables equivalent, allowing Six Shillings pr Bushel for Beans, or Pease - two and eight pence pr Bushel for Onions - One and four pence pr Bushel for Potatoes and Turnips - One pound of Flour pr man each day - Hard Bread to be dealt out one day in a week, in lieu of Flour. General George Washington, General Orders Headquarters at Cambridge Mass., December 24, 1775. we wenent down the river Sorrel to Shambalee Fort, where we tried to get baked bread (no other provisions to be had hear) Lt. Colonel Jeduthan Baldwin, Journal Entry Fort Chambly, Canada, May 14, 1776. they [the workmen] had only 12 ozs of pork 1 1/2 lb of Flower pr Day Lt. Colonel Jeduthan Baldwin, Journal Entry Mount Independence VT, July 18, 1776. The Weather being so wet and Stormy all Last Night, the Commisary is to Issue one gil of Rum to Every non Commisioned Officer and Soldier now in Camp. [Note: this order repeats frequently throughout the summer and into the fall.] 2nd New Jersey Orderly Book, General Orders Fort Ticonderoga NY, July 19, 1776. As Live Cattle increce, the Commisary will Issue five Days Fresh and two Days Salt a Week. 2nd New Jersey Orderly Book, General Orders Fort Ticonderoga NY, July 26, 1776. The Troops are to Receive 1 lb. Flower Beef or 1 lb. of pork per Man a Day Till further Orders. 2nd New Jersey Orderly Book, General Orders Fort Ticonderoga NY, August 5, 1776. When there is not Beef, the Commisary will Isue a half a Pound of Porke 1 1/2 lb. Flour to each man Per Day til further Orders. 2nd New Jersey Orderly Book, General Orders Fort Ticonderoga NY, September 1, 1776. The Commissary will issue three Sheep to each Regt. and two to the Corps of Artillery tomorrow Morning at 10 o'clock. The Commanding Officers of Regts. will see that the sick weak Soldiers of Regts. are supplyed with this Refreshment. 2nd New Jersey Orderly Book, General Orders Fort Ticonderoga NY, September 27, 1776. Mr. Commissary Avery has orders to send directly from Saratoga one thousand Bushels of Turnips Potatoes, which will be served out to the Troops in due proportion upon their arrival at the Commissary Store. 2nd New Jersey Orderly Book, General Orders FortTiconderoga NY, September 29, 1776. It having been represented to the General that many regiments would at this season choose to lesson their ration of meat and supply it with vegetables if they could be permitted, is concerned for the health of the troops, and desires to gratify them in every reasonable request, induces him to direct that Cols. of such regiments as choose to adopt that plan signify to the Commy. Gen. and in two days afterwards the Quartermasters of such regiments be allowed to draw one quarter part of the usual rations in money to be laid out in vegetables. Orderly Book, General Orders Martin's Regiment - New Jersey Militia, July 22, 1776. ************* The PURCHASE of liquor from suttlers (people who traveled with the army to sell liquor to the soldeirs) and food from markets established in camp or nearby, supplemented the issue diet. Fruits and vegetables as well as liquor were purchased: Pine apples as large as a quart Mug, for 6d [d = penny, s= shilling] each. ... A vessel came in on the 19th loaded with the above. She brought 300 dozen of Pine apples - I went on board her this morning (23d) and chose two out of several Cartloads, for which I gave only 1s/ 5 1/2d - The most beautiful fruit I ever saw, and in flavour much superior to any in England. Lt. Mackenzie (British Army), Royal Welch Fusiliers Upon Arrival in New York City, June 29, 1773. No Person is for the future to presume to sell any Stores, or Liquor to the troops, unless he be first appointed Sutler to some Regiment, by the Colonel or Officer commanding the same... For the future all persons bringing any of the above articles immediately for sale are to carry them to the foot of the glasee of the old fort where the markitt is constantly to be held - Should any person or person be detected monopolising or fore stauling the markitt, they will be punish'd by a Court Martial and have all their goods seiz'd for the sick of the hospital. The markett is to be opened every morning at 8 oclock and be allow'd to continue till Sun Sett. 4th Penn. Battalion Orderly Book, General Orders Ticonderoga, September 25, 1776. The two hundered bushels of onions just brought to the Carrying Place at Lake George are to be one half of them sold at the markett post upon the glacis of the old fort and the other half at the markett place in front of Col. Pattersons Regt. upon Mount Independence. 4th Penn. Battalion Orderly Book, General Orders Fort Ticonderoga NY, September 29, 1776. ************* FORAGING, or gathering food from the surrounding countryside, was another way the soldiers could add variety to their meals. Not everyone wanted soldiers to find food this way: our People are not alowed to tread on the ground scarcely they are not alowed to get orsters out of the Cove one man forbid the soldery catching eales But he got nothing for that But Cryes. G. & A. R. R., near Shiloh church, between Broughtonville and Kelly, and was knocked from the track and so badly hurt about the head and body that he died on Sunday. The engineer did all in his power to stop the train, but could not do so until it had struck the boy. No blame can be attached to any of the trainmen for this accident, because it was brought about by the reckless carelessness of the boy in going to sleep on the track when he was sent to watch some cows that were grazing near the railroad. 1. [GAJASPER] Thomas LANE of Jasper Co.
    2. Marian Steward
    3. Descend from Thomas LANE and Rhoda NICHOLSON from Jasper County, GA. Thomas built a house there about 1820, but he died before the family moved in. The youngest son, Henry (Doc) , was 9 months old at the time of his father's death. Their only daughter, Mary Ann (Polly), was 12 years old at the time. 1810 census has Thomas Lane in South Carolina. 1820 census has Thomas in Putnam Co., GA, where his brother William Dawkins LANE had been living. I have read with interest the "History of Jasper County, Georgia" book by the Jasper County Historical Foundation, but now would like a copy of the "History of the Lanes of Jasper County, GA." Does anyone know where it is available for purchase? Please contact me if you have the information at marians03@bellsouth.net Thank you.

    2. In a message dated 12/19/03 8:00:23 AM Central Standard Time, jbrown73@tampabay.rr.com writes: <<Hi, I am from the Jeffries and Tuggle lines. Have you ever seen any of your Spears connected to the Jeffries and/or Tuggle families? Both of these families came out of VA, into Greene, Wilkes and Oglethorpe Counties.>> Hi Anne: No, I have not researched the Spears family, except their (twice) connection to my William Jones SR family of Jasper CO circa 1810. But, you are right about the Virginia migration to Greene/Wilkes. Many Rev War soldiers of VA were paid for their war service by land grants in this frontier region of Georgia, circa 1780-1820. (Most Rev War soldiers served without pay and were true Patriots.) So, when when genealogy dead ends in this region of GA, it is a good bet to search Virginia censuses, probate records, etc., for the first known name of the family in GA of that time period. Incidentally, Jefferies was an early Virginia Colonial family. - Bill Jones

    2. Reference William Spears: I have John Spears born in Greene CO, of Jasper CO 1787-1858, whose wife was Mary Amelia Polly Jones 1793/97-1850. Both died in Jasper and came there from Greene CO. She was the dau of William Jones SR of Jasper CO (removed from Greene CO). I have her full up-line to Colonial Virginia. John Spears and his wife had the following children: Adeline b. 1830 Jane b. 1832 Sarah b. 1834 Robert b. 1820 John b. 1818 Thomas b. 1825 Robert Spears married Mary ? Their children were; William Spears born 1845 John Spears born 1849 Thomas Spears married Mary Catherine Jones abt 1845 These are the Spears in my data base. The above listed Birth dates are not proven. Suggest you find these names in the Jasper CO census of 1830, 1840, 1850 for further research, Also the Greene CO census 1830, 1820, 1810 to trace John Spears' ancestry. Many folks came to Greene/Wilkes CO from Virginia circa 1780-1820 for land grants on the frontier. I would suspect that John Spears was one and you might find him in a Roots Webb search prior to 1810. Hope this helps. Bill Jones

Smith, Deputy Marshal, was not found until Friday last, when a searching party discovered it in a well near Newborn, in Jasper county. He had been shot in the abdomen with a shot gun at short range. The body was wrapped in a quilt, tied with a plow line. The neck was broken, supposed to have been done by being thrown in the well. At the inquest held by the Justice of the district no clue was found as to the perpetrator of the deed and a verdict was so rendered by the jury. It is said that Mr. Smith was not a regularly commissioned officer in the revenue service, but was employed in the capacity of an informer. His murder will be thoroughly investigated by the State and Government officials. This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 1.2 Kb

Surnames: Smith Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Dd.2ADE/1388 Message Board Post: PROF. THOMAS H. SMITH The subject of this sketch was born in Jasper county, Georgia, on the 24th day of April, 1846, and is consequently in the 47th year of his age. He was educated at Newbern, Georgia. During the war between the States, or the war of the rebellion, he enlisted under the banner of the Stars and Bars and was engaged in a number of battles. After the close of the war he came to Kentucky in the year 1867 since which time his interests have been in Hopkins county. Soon after arriving here, he engaged in teaching, his first Kentucky school being taught in Madisonville. In 1881, he was elected by the Court of Claims as Commissioner of Public Schools for Hopkins county. He served two years and while holding that position looked well to the cause of education. He is at present superintendent of the schools of Madisonville. He is a teacher of both experience and ability. He is an earnest educator and has a reputation as an instructer that any man might feel proud of. He is also a minister! in the Christian Church. (Source: Madisonville (Ky.) Joseph Woodruff, Revolutionary Soldier, Of Boro Neck, McIntosh County, Georgia” by Dr. Caldwell Woodruff, published in Hyattsville, MD on 23 July 1917 (available in the Library of Congress- Call # CS71.W887 1917), page 82-83, we find the following letter transcribed as printed: Mayfield, Georgia 25 May 1867 Mrs. A. Nabors, Dear Madam: I am induced to write you, after seeing an obituary of your father in the last Southern Christian Advocate. I am glad of being able to correspond with those that I have so long desired, and have never before had the necessary information to know where to write. I presume I am not mistaken in the family. If not I beg to say that I am now living within a mile of where your mother (Agatha Medlock) was born, and I did own a portion of the land that was originally owned by Uncle George Medlock, your grandfather, and subsequently owned by cousin Lafayette Medlock, your uncle. I sold the land to a man who owns a factory erected at the shoals on Ogeechee river, where your grandfather (George Medlock) had a mill. I am living at the old homestead, where I was raised. My father’s name was Charles. He died in 1840. My mother died in 1850. There was but two children of us. My brother is now living in Columbia County, Arkansas, having moved there in the year 1858. He had several children, and lost two sons in the War. One died at Shiloh and the other at Goldsboro, N.C. I have but two children living, Charles and James. One is married and living near me. I lost one son at the battle of Fort Harrison near Richmond (George) a very pious boy. He was in the junior class of Emory College at the breaking out of the War. I own where I live, about 1600 acres of land, nearly all of which was originally owned by my father. Cousin Mary W. Howell, who was a Jordan, is living near me, and family all well. As I had but few relatives in this country on my father’s side I have long since made many inquiries to learn the whereabouts of your family, so that if we could not see each other we could at least correspond. I have often heard my father speak of your family. A good many of your grandmother’s relatives are now living in this section. She was a Smith if I mistake not. I am now fifty years old, have been a member of the M.E. Church for the last twenty six years. Am living in Hancock County, Georgia, on Ogeechee river and my Post Office is Mayfield. The Milledgeville Railroad runs within five miles of me. Would be very much gratified to see some of you at my house, or to hear from you at least by mail. Come to see the old place. Please write me all the particulars about your immediate family, and inform me where they live so that I can write to them. I have In his book, “Sketch of Col. Joseph Woodruff, Revolutionary Soldier, Of Boro Neck, McIntosh County, Georgia” by Dr. I would never have found it without her and tho I eventually went to the Library of Congress to obtain a copy of the original, will always be eternally grateful to her and the USGENWEB. According to Dot, whose research area was of the Woodruff family; the original letter was in the possession of a member of the Caldwell Woodruff family. Mary Jean Medlock Zimmerman January 2001.
