I am a collector of articles of any type pertaining to this area we have Roots planted. Several years ago I read through the early years of The Winder News on microfilm. So I thought I'd share a few with the list. (partial articles) County Line (By Wage and Sager) Gardens are as good as could be expected here. On of ye scribes visited Walnut Sunday. Everybody is planting cotton in this section, and its cold enough ye to freeze lizards. [this was in April 1913] County Line Who ever heard of folks i this country skooting into their overcoats and wraps in June? The fir places that had been decked with cedar and ferns for the summer, have been utilized for blazing fires. We read in the Bible where it says that the time shall come, but we say it HAS come. You can't tell summer from winter. [this was in June 1913] And I thought the following remark was ironic for what I thought were slow & peaceful times. "Is it going to take the whole world to make the innocent bystanders safe" I wonder what prompt that remark in 1913? It seems we can learn so much about those who came before us, by reading the news of their day. In the 1913-14-15 papers (The Winder News), C.M. Thompson every week or so gave information about some of the old families & churches in the area. Some weeks would go by and nothing would be in the papers & then he would go weeks on end with info. Some of the "History Sketches I made copies of were of William Booth ; Elija Lay ; Mr. McMillan who married Miss Margaret Rainey ; Thomas L. Ross ; William Pentecost ; John Patrick ; The Hinton Family ; Richard Hill ; Smiths & More! Very interesting material for descendants to use & search them selves to prove. I wonder if anyone knows who C.M Thompson was & what happen to his material he used to write some of the History Sketches? Thanks!
