I am still trying to clean out 20 years of clippings from news papers & other notes that I have saved. For some reason I didn't date this clipping from an old photo copy of The Winder News - but noted one small line of interest & I can't quite make it out but of interest to me any way. I have set down many a day at the old readers & tried to read a lot of the old newspapers of early days - sometimes you can gain a world of in site to those days & people. Brief The Winder News (date unknown) The gentlemen who was writing this was being show around Winder by Doctor Bush. The time frame is unknown but he mentions The Winder Banking Company began business a few years ago & mentions another private banking establishment of ?_____? and Carithers. He mentions the Winder Cotton Mill. Now I didn't make a very good copy but here is what I can make out ---my note in ( - ) Mr. Smith of Smith & Carkhers (same as bank?) is a giant in stature and a most genial man. "Do you know old man John Silvey, of Atlanta?" he asked. "Like a book." Well he was one of my good friends in the old days. John was raised in Jackson County, you know. He told me once that he that when he started in life he worked the first year for his victuals (sic - food?) and clothes. He died rich." He certainly did (answer) "By the way". said Mr. Smith, "I used to know old man Patman (crease in paper?) , who owned pretty much all of the ground Winder stands on before Doctor Bush here came along and bought hm out ?________? I(I couldn't make out the last few words. Now Dr. W.H. Bush died in 1918 so it was before that - Does anyone know who this Mr. Patman could have been?? Just curious!
