Is anyone familiar with the William and Priscilla (?) MORGAN family. I know they were living in Jackson County at the time of William's death in 1809 (I have the Faye Poss Stone books). I need to know where they moved from in North Carolina and what Priscilla's maiden name was. Thanks!
Hello List -- I am searching for the specifics on the parents of George Madison CHANDLER. He was born 8 June 1903 in Jackson County and was killed on World War II. His father was Edgar M. CHANDLER, born in Georgia in 1868(?) and his mother was Cora E. (Last name unknown) born in 1872(?) in Mississippi(?). I do not know the towns that these people were born in. Any kind of help or clue would be appreciated. These people are a significant part of my family line. Regards, Carl Smarling

I have to backup a little on what I posted the other day (shown below) - I'm not sure about the last name of Jacob Pettyjohn's wife. Her first name was Betsey, but the last name may not have been "Staton". I have copy of a chart that shows Abraham Pettyjohn, who m. Elizabeth Marsh; their dau. Mary Pettyjohn m. James(?) Staton, and Mary d. abt 1808 in Jackson Co., GA. This Mary was the sister of Jacob Pettyjohn - the one that came to Jackson Co. Since the lady who produced the chart was uncertain of the first name of James(?) Staton, I'm wondering if it could have been William Staton. Abraham Pettyjohn d. abt 1763 in Sussex Co., DE, and his widow Elizabeth Marsh married twice after his death. (They had 3 children: Jacob, William and Mary.) She m. second Robert Warren, Jr. Mar. 7, 1764 in Sussex Co., DE (and this was probably the father of Abraham Warren who m. Rebecca Staton on 1/20/1794 in Amherst Co., VA). Her third marriage was to Pearce Wade bef. Dec. 1769, Amherst Co., VA. The book TIDEWATER VA FAMILIES by Virginia Lee Hutcheson Davis, 1989, has a substantial amount of info - well researched - on the Pettyjohn family. Faye My prior posting shown below: ---------------- I have some info on Staton's & Pettyjohn's also ... your Jacob must have been a grandson of Jacob Pettyjohn who died in Jackson Co., will dated 12/13/1810, probated 1/7/1811. I have the names of the children of his sons Abram and James, but not for Reuben and William. Do you have? His wife's name was Betsey Staton. You probably have, but he was b. in Sussex Co., DE about 1754, was in Albemarle/Amherst Co., VA, also was found in SC prior to moving to Jackson Co. Also named was dau. Sally Kirkpatrick. One of the executors of his will was Abram Warren. Abraham Warren m. Rebecca Staton, dau. of William Staton, on 1/20/1794 in Amherst Co., VA, and Jacob Pettyjohn was the surety. I suspect William Staton was the brother of his wife Betsey, and that Rebecca was his neice. He also named Fleming Staton as his nephew. These relationships get quite confusing, but - as far as I can figure out - William Staton married Lucy Bailey, dau. of Samuel Bailey. Abram Warren d. 7/1818 and Rebecca (Staton) Warren and Ralph Bailey were appointed executors of his estate. (Ralph Bailey is my line.) Samuel Bailey's will was dated 2/16/1796, probated 2/1797 in Albemarle Co., VA and named his dau. Lucy Staton.
Hi Lisa - From the 1850 census for Jackson Co., this appears to be the father of Sarah Susannah Hayes: Household No. 1143 James J. Hays 27 M Laborer, b. SC Viana 32 F, b. GA Edna E. 5 F, b. GA Sarah S. 2 F, b. GA No Tillison's in the 1850 or 1860 Jackson Co. Census. From the info I have, can't tell who James J. Hay's father is. Sorry! The 1860 Jackson Co. Census shows them in Household No. 686: James J. Hays 36M Farmer, b. GA (this varies from above) Vianna 42F, b. GA Edna 14 F, b. GA Sarah 11 F, b. GA Mary 9 F, b. GA Georgia 4 F, b. GA BTW, these Census books are still available from Terri B. Boyd, at a very reasonable price. Her E-mail address is: terriboyd@airnet.net Hope this gives you a start! Hello everyone, Below is a snip from a recent post. I am interested in learning more about James Toy HAYES. We have a Sarah Susannah Hayes born possibly February 18, in either 1840 or 1848 (census and bible records seem to differ) in Jackson Co. She was married to James David TILLISON (b. SC, July 9, 1848). The Tillison family bible says that they were married on February 18, 1869 "at J.T Hayes". We are assuming that J.T. Hayes was Sarah's father. If anyone has a list of children for James Toy Hayes (hoping it includes Sarah Susannah) I would appreciate knowing their names. I am interested in all the info you have on Staton's,Whitmire's and Pettyjohn's. Fleming Staton is in my direct line. I would be interested in whatever part of a Whitmire book which you have. I have Jacob Pettyjohn and Mary Mariah Whitmire's children with dates. This Jacob Pettyjohn was son of James Pettyjohn and Temperance Rogers. James Pettyjohn's father was Jacob Pettyjohn of Va. I don't have dates on him or his wife's name but it might be the same one you mentioned. I am willing to share whatever I have.
I have some info on Staton's & Pettyjohn's also ... your Jacob must have been a grandson of Jacob Pettyjohn who died in Jackson Co., will dated 12/13/1810, probated 1/7/1811. > > I am related to two of the surnames that Dawn mentioned in her > msg. I do have the part from the Whitmire book that shows the children of Jacob Pettyjohn and Mary Mariah Whitmire - but I cant figure out whose child he is. Hope you have! Faye
I am related to two of the surnames that Dawn mentioned in her msg. My uncle was Charlie Hayes married to Bessie Staton. He would have been born around 1910-1915. He is buried at Cross Plains Baptist Church cemetary in Forsyth Co. Ga. Also I al related to a lot of the Whitmire's, some from Jackson Co, Ga. Mary Maria Whitmire married Jacob Pettyjohn in Jackson co. Ga around mid 1800's. I have more. Sam
Dawn - Re. your query, I have a few items (maybe someone else has some input?). I don't have much on Youngblood - there was an article in the old Georgia Express Newspaper on 9/15/1810, from Wm. Wood, Jailer at Jefferson, Jackson Co., about a negro fellow named Jacob, who said he belonged to Benjamin Youngblood of Baldwin Co., GA - owner requested to come and take him home. > Youngblood line comes from Blairsville, Union County and is first found in > Jackson Co. GA with John Youngblood b. 1842 (buried in Pendergrass Cemetery- > inscribed Co F. 6 GA Cal CSA) his children were : Wallace b 1869 m. Lillie > Ann Hayes (children Charles R. and Ralph), James Calvin b. 1871 (m. As you had mentioned, Cinthia Jane Long was the dau. of Willis Long and Sarah Whitmire. I have a copy of a chart that shows Willis's father as being John Anderson Long, b. Aug. 22, 1787, Abbeville Dist., SC, m. Rhoda Pearce, b. 1795. Willis was b. June 16, 1816, Jackson Co., m. Sarah Whitmire on 3/1/1840, d. Aug. 24, 1859, Pendergrass, GA. According to the book WHITMIRE FAMILY OF GA by Nellie Leola Whitmire Pantell, 1992, Sarah Whitmire was b. Sept. 14, 1821, d. Apr. 24, 1909, and was the 11th child of John and Susan Whitmire. Sarah d. Aug. 24, 1895 and was buried at Pendergrass Church Cem. In a volume at the Jackson Co. Courthouse, "Bonds, Administrators & Guardians, 1818-1843", p. 195: William Lyle, John J. McCullock, Isaac Boring and Osbon M. Long bound in the sume of $20,000 on July 4, 1837. Condition of the above is that William Lyle and John J. McCullock, temporary administratos of the goods, chattels and credits of James Tait, deceased, do make a true & perfect inventory ... Wonder who Osbon M. Long was? I didn't find another reference to him. > George A. Hayes was the son of James Toy Hayes b. 1823 d. 1889 and Martha D. > Lyle b. 1825 d. 1860. George's parents died in Terrell Co. . Martha Lyle was > the dau of William Lyle b. 1770 VA d. 1860 Jackson Co.and Elizabeth Boring b. > 1784 Jackson Co d. 1863. As you know, Elizabeth Boring's parents were Isaac Boring and Phoebe Browning. Isaac was b. in NC on 3/8/1762, was a Rev. Soldier and left a will in Jackson Co., will dated 9/14/1829, probated 6/7/1831. (He was the son of Joseph and Susannah Boring.) Elizabeth Lyle was mentioned in the will. She was b. Oct. 29, 1784, m. to William Lyle in 1803, and d. 1863. William was b. Dec. 21, 1770, d. Oct. 24, 1860. (This info taken from a newspaper article, The Times, Gaiknesville, July 18, 1976.) Their children: Dilmus Lyle, b. 1/4/1804, d. 1880, m. Sally Green Charles B. Lyle, b. 1/4/1807, d. 1881, m. Julia Carlton James B. Lyle John B. Lyle William C. Lyle Francis M. Lyle Rebecca Lyle Elizabeth Lyle Asenath Lyle Martha Lyle David S. Lyle The article says, "William Lyle was the son of Maher Shallol Hasby Lyle who came from Halifax Co., VA. Maher Lyle was a Scotchman and also a soldier in the Rev. War. He was with George Washington at Yorktown when Cornwallis surrendered. Mather was b. Mar. 14, 1737 and died Jan. 30, 1814. He was m. to Elizabeth Gibson, b. Feb. 13, 1741 and d. Jan. 15, 1831 at age 90." (I suspect you have most of this!) There are numerous references in my book JACKSON CO., GA, DEED ABSTRACTS, 1796-1808, to William Lyle, William Henry Lyle, and one each for Dilmus Lyle and George Noble Lyle. William H. Lyle was agent, and had a power of attorney dated 9/11/1800 from William Lyle of Prince Georges Co., MD to lease, rent or convey his properties in the State of GA in Franklin Co. On 2/24/1806, William Lyle of Prince Georges Co., MD appointed his son, George Noble Lyles, his true and lawful attorney for his lands in Franklin Co. (now divided into other counties). Sworn before Cleon Moore, N.P. for Alexandria Town and Co., D.C. As far as I can tell, this is the same William Lyle. Maybe you can verify, Dawn? > William Lyle's father was Maher Shallet Hasty Lyle b. Scotland 1737 > Elizabeth Boring's father was Isaac Boring Sr b. 1762 Hope you got that snow - its just COLD down here in Snellville, GA! Faye
