Most of what was turned in to those interment books done by the UDC was given to them by me on Franklin, Stephens, Habersham, White, Rabun, Banks, and later I turned in quite a bit on Jackson but that didn't make it in the books. In fact my chapter won the Lyle Hightower award for the most interment records turned in because of my work. I also was awarded the Jefferson Davis HIstorical Medal for it. My webpage is found at "http://www.hartcom.net/~scv935/grey" There you will find complete listings for each volume that I have published so far which are Franklin, Habersham, STephens, Rabun, White, and Banks Co. JAckson Co. will be coming up I hope by the end of the Summer if not before as I am hard at work on it right now. I will post to this list as soon as it is in print. Karen T. 3. Annette, Sarah Dunaway was in charge of the project. She used to be off Buford Hwy in Atlanta at Executive Park at the North Druid Hills Rd exit off I-85. This would have been a business address. I tried to find her in the white pages on the internet this way, but no luck. I'm no longer in UDC, but you could email headquarters. The website is http://www.hqudc.org/ and email address is hqudc@aol.com Hope this helps. 3. Several years ago at the Gwinnett Historical Soc., I saw a series of 6 volumes of books put out by the Georgia Daughters of the Confederacy of 'interment of Confederate Sol.'s' I made paper copies of a few counties of my interest such as Gwinnett, Barrow, Jackson, Hall Co.'s & a few others in south GA & NW GA. My question of any one wh would possibly know. In Jackson Co as an example: ONLY 15 Conferate Sol's are listed & the cem they are interred in - Now I know there has be many more than that? Barrow Co even had more listed as did Gwinnett Co - although many weren't listed. I thought at first perhaps those listed had the Conferate Markers place at their grave but according to the preface of the books - "Many sources were used to gather data" Now as is it is still a good source - But very incomplete - does any one know any thing more? Perhaps some one with the GA Dau's could give more information. Thanks Annette Please Reply To: georgianet@webtv.net "My Main Home Page" http://www.geocities.com/annettega_1999/

    1. News Items - Early Winder News
    2. Annette
    3. I am a collector of articles of any type pertaining to this area we have Roots planted. Several years ago I read through the early years of The Winder News on microfilm. So I thought I'd share a few with the list. (partial articles) County Line (By Wage and Sager) Gardens are as good as could be expected here. On of ye scribes visited Walnut Sunday. Everybody is planting cotton in this section, and its cold enough ye to freeze lizards. [this was in April 1913] County Line Who ever heard of folks i this country skooting into their overcoats and wraps in June? The fir places that had been decked with cedar and ferns for the summer, have been utilized for blazing fires. We read in the Bible where it says that the time shall come, but we say it HAS come. You can't tell summer from winter. [this was in June 1913] And I thought the following remark was ironic for what I thought were slow & peaceful times. "Is it going to take the whole world to make the innocent bystanders safe" I wonder what prompt that remark in 1913? It seems we can learn so much about those who came before us, by reading the news of their day. In the 1913-14-15 papers (The Winder News), C.M. Thompson every week or so gave information about some of the old families & churches in the area. Some weeks would go by and nothing would be in the papers & then he would go weeks on end with info. Some of the "History Sketches I made copies of were of William Booth ; Elija Lay ; Mr. McMillan who married Miss Margaret Rainey ; Thomas L. Ross ; William Pentecost ; John Patrick ; The Hinton Family ; Richard Hill ; Smiths & More! Very interesting material for descendants to use & search them selves to prove. I wonder if anyone knows who C.M Thompson was & what happen to his material he used to write some of the History Sketches? Thanks! Her name was Nancy Catherine "Kate" Whitehead. They moved to Wood Co, TX. Another Lyle relative, Elizabeth Jane Hancock married Mark E. Whitehead in Jackson Co, GA. 1. Legg/Warwick/Highfill/Smith Families
    2. lilyroym
    3. I am looking for the parents of my great-great-grandmother, Elizabeth M. Legg, who married Rev. Wiley P(aul?) Warwick in Jackson County on January 24, 1833. She was born c1815 and survived her husband, who died April 22, 1876. He was a Methodist minister (I have always heard that he was a circuit rider, like his father, Wiley Prince Warwick) and they had children born in TN, MS, GA and SC. At different times they lived in Habersham and Cass Counties. I do not know the death or burial places of either Wiley or Elizabeth. There was a large family of Leggs in Jackson County during the early nineteenth century. One James Legg seems to have migrated from VA via SC and I think he must be Elizabeth's grandfather. I have been looking for my Legg great-great-great-grandparents for over two years. Can anyone help me? Also, I would like to know the parentage of another great-great-grandfather, John F. Highfill/Highfield. He was born in GA c1806 and lived in Jackson County, but in the early 1870s he moved to Parker County, TX. His wife was Nancy A. Smith, whom he married in Habersham County. Her family background is also a mystery to me. I would be very grateful for any help at all. Lily Mullinax

    3. Many many thanks to all who responded to me on this. My Mitchells have been Baptist for years, but don't know that far back. I doubt that the family had enough money to put up a tombstone so I was hoping to call or write whoever had the sexton's records (if any). Looking at the wonderful web site that Marilyn Cain sent http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html I now wonder if it was Crooked Creek as that's off the road going to Clarke Co. & the Jackson Co. Mitchells & Clarke Co. Mitchells are related. Now I'm curious about this cemetery book with lots of Mitchells in it. Could I get copies from someone? I'd be happy to reimburse for copies & postage? Many thanks. Meredith Clapper

    3. Marie, Can you clarify this for me? Did the Joel Freeman family you mention (see letter below) actually live in this David-Freeman cabin? Do you happen to know the approx dates? Or other details of this family? The information I have is, Joel Freeman (living in Madison Co, GA) b.1776 d.1863 m. Elizabeth Ware, they had a son Joel Newton Freeman 1822-1883. I have no wife for this man, and had thought he was in the Richmond Co GA, area around the Civil War. These Freemans were related to other Freemans residing in Jackson and Franklin Co GA.
