    3. Hello! I'm looking for information on my 4g grandfather, referenced above. The information that I currently have on him is this: he and his family moved from Pendleton District, SC, after 1800, and was in Jackson Co., GA, by 1804. He may have had a brother named Josiah. Any information would be appreciated! Best regards, Lorrie Thedford lorriet@mindspring.com

    2. I would like to tell about my experience with the Jackson County Courthouse. In the spring I called the courthouse in Jefferson, Ga and requested a copy of John Martin's will. I was told all I needed to do was send a letter with my request and a stamped self addressed envelope and they would mail a copy of the will to me. About a week after I mailed my request I received a letter from a man in Waycross, Ga telling me he would copy the will from the Will book by Faye Poss for $10 plus $2 handling fee. He said the employees at the courthouse were to busy to make copies. It was mailed in the envelope I sent to the courthouse. Well I checked online and bought the book for $32 and found 6 wills for my ancestors in it. The book is well written. I had copied one of the orginal wills earlier in the Archives and the transcribed will is exactly the same. Needless to say I was dissappointed in the people from the courthouse sending my request to someone in the southern part of the state, no where near the archives or Jackson Co., GA Joyce in AL << Could someone please give me the address for obtaining copies of Jackson Co wills & deeds. 3. Hi Everyone, I live in Jackson County just outside of Jefferson, which is the county seat. You can send your request to: Probate Court 85 Washington Street Jefferson, Ga. 30549 706-367-6366 Right now the they are pretty busy getting ready for the election next week, so if you are requesting information on records there I would wait until the end of July or beginning of August when things have settled down. The probate judge is one of the seats that is up for re-election this year. Right now Margaret Deadwyler is the Probate Judge, she has done a wonderful job!! We are hoping she will get re-elected. I know where the six votes in this house is going!! 3. I've had good success writing directly to the probate court for various counties and getting copies of wills & estates. It depends on how busy a county it is and I've never written for anything in Jackson Co. as of yet. The GA archives will also do it, but they are pricey-last I checked 2 years ago it was $15 for instate & $25 for out of state (which was an improvement as for a while it was $50 out of state.). If you live by a Mormon church, you can rent the film for Jackson county for a small fee and check it yourself at the church genealogy center (called Family History Centers). ----- Original Message ----- From: <a8d4c65xka@mailexpire.com> To: <GAJACKSO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: July 11, 2000 2:54 PM Subject: Re: Jackson Co GA > > Thanks for the response to my query. > > However, I want a copy of the original will, not an abstract, > as well as copies of some deeds. 1. 1797/99 - 1802 TAX DIGEST FOR JACKSON COUNTY, GEORGIA, Vol. 1 - For Sale
    2. Belinda & Dave Savadge
    3. I have just transcribed and published the 1797/99 & 1802 Tax Digest for Jackson County, Georgia. This book is the transcriptions for the first Tax Digest book in the Jackson County, Georgia Probate Court Office. It has what could be found of the 1797, 1799 and all of the 1802 Tax Digest, 1800 & 1801 are missing and not in the Courthouse. This book contains approx. 949 surnames and over 1200 individuals. The Tax Digest list the Tax Payers Name, the Quality of Land, To Whom the Land was Granted, which County the Land was in, the Water Way, Whose Land it Joined, Number of Slaves they owned, Town Lots they owned, Stock in Trade, the Tax they paid or if they only paid a Poll Tax. In some cases it list the Agent, Administrator, or Guardian who was representing the tax payer. Tax Payers paid taxes in the county they resided in, so this books also list if they owned land in a different county and also includes the above information on it. Jackson County was formed from Franklin County in 1796. The following counties were formed from part of Jackson County: Banks (1858), Barrow (1914), Clarke (1801), Gwinnett (1818), Hall (1818), Madison (1811), and Oglethorpe. 8 1/2" x 11", sftbnd, perfect bound, 374 pages, fully indexed.
