It's probaly only of intrest to local people that grew up going to this nice big spring fed lake with super nice natural sand through the bottom. It was really the memory of youth and friends and a fun place with a few water slides. The pics that were just released on facebook really spooked a lot of people (myself included) and so I did a web search after i saw those ieery pics that lead me here. It has a history apprently that i never knew about all the way back to 1950 something. I would encourage all people who have photos of the past and present to post them. I didn't even remember where it was it's been so long but apperantly it's located in the very small south ga town of irwenville. Never actually been there except to go to Crystal Lake. Oh, the fact that Crystal Lake was the same name as "Camp Crystal Lake" in Friday the 13th horror movie, im sure its just a coinsident. It was closed down i think in 90 or 91 im not sure. The pi! cs that i saw looked like they just up and left one day, relly spooky. That's really all I know. Oh, and I know a least one person drowned and there are tales of gost and hauntings and the reason why it closed in the first place. In reality, insurance cost are what shut the place down but there were so many rumors about why. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. It brought back so many memories. I read through all the comments left here and I think that someone should really begin putting some of the pieces together. This whole time I believed that the place closed down becuase of an outbreak of hepatitus! I've heard that it is haunted and a bunch of other rumors. I'm ready to get in the car right now drive down there and jump the fence. I want to hear the story of these people who took these recent pictures and the story behind that at least! More specifically, I am researching Robert M. Cooper and Nancy Ann Horton. You can also find Nancy on a 1910 census in Laurel Hill, Florida. Do you have any idea what the daughters' names were and if they had any other children? I'd love to share info - maybe we can help each other. Some have given my Williams ancestor to David Williams but I do not think so. James H Williams and Stephen Williams appear in the 1850 Irwin Co census on either side of Mary Williams. We believe her to be their mother. However, if Mary Williams, widow of David, is in AL, then this MUST be a different Mary Williams! I have found no evidence that James, Stephen or Mary were in Irwin Co prior to the 1850 census. Stephen seems to have been in Bulloch Co, James may have been in Dooly Co but no clue where Mary was. Would love to get in touch with David Hunter if he's still around. Thanks!! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The County Seat for Irwin Co .Ga. is Ocilla with zip code 31774 telephone number is 912- 382-1556 and ask for probate office.
Below is information I am looking for: ................................ October 11, 1824, Isaac Bankston of Walton County, Georgia gives power of attorney to Robt. Mallin to sell Lot 76, 5th district, Irwin County, Georgia. Lot drawn in 1820 Land Lottery. ................................ Trying to find out information about the sale of this lot in hope some names might be listed. Where would I go to find such papers. In looking at the "old Irwin county" it is quite large and so many counties were divided from the area. Would Ocilla be the county seat where these sales would be recorded ?? Thanks in advance for any information. Live in Brunswick and possibly will drive over when I locate a destination. Thanks, Don Bankston

The History of Irwin County tells the story. It was called Bone Pond in the early days where Bone had a steam corn mill on the banks of what became Crystal Lake. Bone was hung for killing Jack Walker a Justice of the Peace and a neighbor. He also according to the story hid two Yankee prisoners that escaped and later a negro slave that ran away that Jack Walker had down and was preparing to tie, when he was shot from ambush by Bone. The story goes on but Bone was convicted by a court of justice and hung from a oak tree at the edge of the pond. ----- Original Message ----- From: <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> To: <GAIRWIN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, June 14, 2010 1:56 PM Subject: Re: [GAIRWIN] cystal lake/crystal beach waterpark > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Author: fanniefrannie1 > Surnames: > Classification: queries > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.georgia.counties.irwin/789.6/mb.ashx > > Message Board Post: > > My Mom's family grew up going there.
