Hello Folks, The Huxford Genealogical Society of Homerville, Clinch Co., Georgia invites you to join your friends and neighbors for the once in a lifetime Grand Opening of the new Huxford-Spear Genealogy Library at the Municipal Complex in Homerville, Georgia. This is a FREE event! Refreshments will be served and door prises will be awarded. Please R.S.V.P. via Facebook (Huxford-Spear Library) or by email to Elmer Spear at espear1943@gmail.com, so we can plan food and door prises for this event. This 'new' Huxford - Spear Library is going to be a great new genealogical experience. The Grand Opening will be Sunday, February 13, 2011 at the regular Huxford Society Quarterly Meeting. The library will open at 10:00 a.m. on this Sunday for your researching enjoyment and the Grand Opening celebration and lecture will begin at 2:00 p.m. Elmer Spear will be the speaker for this celebration (speaking about the new additions to the library). If you haven't heard, the very large and excellent Elmer Spear Genealogy Library from Madison, Florida was closed last year and the contents of this great library are being transferred to the new Huxford-Spear Library in Homerville (a donation made by Elmer Spear to the Huxford Genealogical Society). The Huxford-Spear Library will have genealogical reference books from every state in the Union and several foreign countries. The primary focus of this library is still the southeastern U.S., but this new library will also have many resources for the New England states, the mid Atlantic states and the mid West states (especially for Ohio). This combined library will house both the original Huxford Library collection and the Spear Library collection; Over 30,000 genealogy books and other research materials in the new library will be a great resource for all genealogy enthusiasts. You can't depend on the Internet for all of your research. Please mark your calendar for the Grand Opening. If you can't make the Grand Opening, plan on a visit to Homerville in the near future. Many of the reference books from both libraries will be back on the shelves in the new library by late January. The Homerville Municipal Complex, which houses the Huxford-Spear Library has been modernized and refurbished for the new library. The floor space allocated to the library has been more than tripled. Please make every effort to visit the new Huxford-Spear Library in the coming months. You will be glad you did. While you are there, please help support this wonderful library in the heart of Wiregrass Georgia by joining the Huxford Society and if feasible making a contribution of funds or your unique reference material (like your own family history). You should also consider submitting biographical sketches (to be published by the Huxford Genealogical Society) for your ancestors who were once residents of the Wiregrass Region of Alabama, Georgia, or Florida. Having your sketches and brick walls published by the Huxford Genealogical Society will enhance the likelihood you will be able to expand your knowledge of your family history when the thousands of Wiregrass Georgia researchers see your sketches in the Huxford Quarterly Magazine. By the way, I (Robert B. Noles) will be available during the Grand Opening to answer your questions about genetic genealogy (DNA testing for your family history research). Your descendants will be very disappointed, if they don't find your DNA test results on file. Rob Noles Robert B. Noles rbnoles@bellsouth.net

According to the History of Irwin County by J.B. Clements published in 1932, Wyatt A. Tucker was sheriff from 1910 to 1921. Archie Tucker must have served as sheriff after 1932. Who would know the dates he served or his date of death where I can locate his obituary? I was told by someone who knew him that Archie Tucker retired to Florida. I would have loved to seen all that. I love anything historical. I went when I was a child and went 1 time in 1991 before they closed. Good memories. I wish the owner would let people look around, but not all people would go and be nice and honest. They would try to do something mean. It is ashame us honest people can't go see it. I wish you could have posted some pictures. I wonder why the owners are so secretive about it. There are sooooo many people with memories that would like to see it. John R McCall was born in Webster county 1854, his children mainly Clifford R McCall moved to Irwin county. Clifford married Maude Jeffers in Irwin county in 1903. In many records, it shows Cliffords mom and Johns wife as Mannie McCall. Born in 1862. I can get no marriage or death record for Mannie or Mamie McCall, and no idea of burial, justknow she died somewhere around 1910-1920. They were living ( John and Mamie) in Dougherty, Albany in 1910 census. Mamie or Mannie is my main concern so I can find her maiden name. There children of her nad John R are as follows. Most moved to Florida as did John R Mccall. Other counties they were in Webster, Talbot and Muscogee Mary Alva Clifford Yvonne Annie Cylde Labert Carl Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I hiked back to the park this morning and most everything is still in tact. The ticket entrance and ticket check booth are there and very much faded by the sunlight. Seems like some slight vandalism has happend over the years. The lake itself still has alot of white sand but most of the lake floor is now covered by bushes and growth...even more so than the 2008 photo taken by plane. The water? .....none to speak of....completely dry. The waterslides are all still standing ( The Rampage and one other slide ) as are the slides built into the lake banks....I counted two. The pavillion is there but worn down. The wooden sidewalks around it are falling apart. The pavillion is also chained up and locked tight. Last but not least "Old Slippery Dip" is still there with only weeds growing over one of the chutes i used to slide out of as a y! oung boy. I walked around what would be the lake floor and took it all in. It was alittle emotional. This was such a fun place as a child and now a dead wonderland. When hiking out i ran into a policeman who lives out there to provide security. It seems there has been people who have broken into the place and tore things up. I had taken pictures while there and after explaining myself to the officer was asked to delete my photos at the owners wishes. The officer was also aware of pictures being posted on the internet from others who had entered at their own risk and claimed that the owner was unhappy about it. Was escorted off of the property and headed back home. So...the park is watched by cameras and security and I am all for it. The owner wants to protect was is left and not everyone just wants to embrace the past....they want to rape it. I'm glad I got to see it one last time......nothing ever last forever.
