Hi, One of our list members, Winnette Stinson, shared this link with me and I think it is something that many of you might want to read. A very interesting article about changes in our National Archives and Records system. Gloria Perhaps genealogists should be concerned about the information in this article in Dick Eastman's newsletter. The newsletter in its entirety can be read at http://www.eogn.com"This is the first time since the National Archives and Records Administration was established as an independent agency that the process of nominating an Archivist of the United States has not been open for public discussion and input." Hi, if I have forgotten to get back to anyone regarding a request for a lookup or any other reason please forgive me. John and I have been back and forth to the county where his Mother lives due to her failing condition. Believe I had mentioned she has cancer which is all over and also has congestive heart failure/renal problems so it is a matter of time. I hope you will all be patient with us as we will be on and offline. In the past John has always checked my messages if I was not available but this time we will be together when out of town and I will rely on June, George, Gene and other cousins who help out on the message boards and mail lists. Hope everyone is having a wonderful summer and most of all a healthy one. There are also some family mail lists and chat areas set up at yahoo.com for more personal chats and mail about our generation for family and old school friends from Irwin, Ben Hill and Pulaski Counties. While this mail list is more for genealogy the others are more for a wider variety of purposes. So do think about subscribing to those lists also and invite your family members to join. There is live chat on all three should you want to download the software and get some live chats going. If anyone's query has gone unanswered do keep checking back as some of our volunteers may be on vacation and not available. But when they see your queries they will respond to your request. He may have owned property in more than two GA Counties and may have been in the Irwin County area on a temporary basis to help establish the county. Also see Houston County records as I found listings for Winslow in both counties. I transcribed the 1820 and 1830 Irwin County Census records and did not find any listing for the Winslow family. The book that I have is from the early edition and is not indexed. But perhaps George or one of the other volunteers who has a copy of the reprint which does have an index will check for other references to the Winslow surname. In addition to the Clements book I checked in four other books that I have on hand that pertain to some of the Irwin County pioneer families. There was no mention of Winslow in any of those. I also checked to see if he was among a group of Irwin County Pioneers who moved to Florida and he was not mentioned in the land records for that county either. George has the census indexes for Irwin County, 1820, 30, 40, 50, 50. I have the 1870 Census index and did not find him listed on that index. I am sure that as soon as other subscribers see you message they will check their books and see if they have any information on the Winslow family. Kind Regards, Gloria

Once stating he was a JP and evidentally had done some services to help with the founding of Irwin Co. That was in 1822; and again in 1823, he is listed under the historical papers on education. I have not found him in censuses in the early 1800s there. If anyone has information as to his line and decendants, I would like to hear from you. Thanks, Barbara
I am seeking information on a connection between the Smith,Gibbs and Hall Families. My mother-in-law was Myrtle Wayne Hall(1912-1983). She was the daughter of Dennis Kilmar/Kilmer Hall and Mary Elizabeth Smith. I am not sure of a connection between, Mary Elizabeth Smith, and a particular Smith in the Irwin County area. If you will notice Myrtle's middle name was Wayne but that does not prove a relationship but hints at two. Henry Wayne Smith and I believe there was another Smith with the middle name of Wayne in the area at that time. Dennis Kilmar/Kilmer Hall, age 25, is shown in the 1910 Federal Census for Wilcox County as the son of Elizabeth B. Hall, a widow. I haven't been able to find a name for her husband. I would appreciate any help you can provide. Janice Morgan woodjems@juno.com

Well another fourth of July is upon us. Each fourth of July brings me closer to my ancestors who were a part of that great time in the history of our Country. Last night I was thinking about my John Willcox who owned and operated an iron foundry in NC. In fact John who had a leg injury since childhood could nor fight so he turned over this iron foundary and donated 40 tons of iron ore for the American Cause for Independance. The iron ore was used to make cannon balls which helped to defeat the British. But many of you on this list most likely know about our "John Willcox". Wilcox County, GA is named for John's grandson, General Mark Lea Willcox, brother to my John Willcox, III aka Jr. I think if I had the chance to meet John and his wife Rebecca Butler Willcox, my first questions would be who was Rebecca's father? It would not be about the war at all but mostly genealogy questions. Was her mother, Jane Barry related to Admiral Barry (father of the US Navy) a cousin? Eventually, I would make my way around to asking about the hardships that the war had placed on the family and why there was no painting done of Rebecca? After all there is a very good one of John which resides in the NC Historical Society. And speaking of that painting the work really appears to be the work of the artist Peale. If given the chance to meet these family members I would show them photos of both my father and my paternal Grandfather and let them see the close resemblance which spanned so many years. In each photo the man is posed just like John Willcox was when his portrait was painted back in the 1780s. Each one has the same nose, the same chin, the same mouth, same hairline. That is amazing to me and is one of the reasons I love old photographs so much. We can see how our family members have inherited features from out ancestors. When in college I majored in fine art and was trained to see minute details in everything that I view. Family photos are a visual genealogy of our ancestors. Like their names we also inheriet their genes and with those genes come physical traits and characteristics which are passed from one generation to another. Sometimes there will be a child born who has almost all of the features of that early ancestor. Which one of your ancestors would you want to meet and what would you ask them? I wish all of you a safe and joyful fourth of July. God bless all of you, Gloria "What good is knowledge if not shared?" --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? New and Improved Yahoo!
