Hicks, Sr & Julia Reynolds Hicks Thomasville Times Enterprise Letters to the Editor May 1, 2003 Thomas County should be proud of its rich history I have, over time enjoyed books of Bailey White. Her father Robb White, also wrote memorably. Thomas County has been blessed with the beauty of nature and populated by exceptional people. I just visited our family cemetery in Metcalfe where many of my ancestors rest. Absent are graves of John David and Moses Hicks, two teenagers who died in the Civil War. One died in a Yankee prison camp. What I gain from study and research of my forebears is sheer inspiration. The same is true of all American histo- ry, especially Texas, where I have lived mostly since 1945. I also lived in many other places as an Air Force wife. I have read how pioneers to Texas left a trail of lark feathers and jack rabbit bones. My, they had to be good marksmen to hit one of those fast, huge jack rabbits. Once at the San Angelo, Texas, Air Base on a nature walk, a jack rabbit, tall as my waist, refused to move for a while and arrogantly just stared at me and my little children. Those pioneers who died were buried along the way, not even in a marked grave. The old cemeteries of Thomasville on Madison Street provide truly interest- ing sites of local history that can be read on gravestones. William Faulkner said, "Down South, the past isn't dead. It's not even passed." Well, Faulkner was right, and how glad we are and how enriched we are with the example and beauty left to us, preserved and enhanced by all our wonderful ancestors who had great stamina, ambi- tion and courage. I salute the beloved parents and grandparents of all Thomas Countians of all generations. They deserve to never be forgotten. Katherine Hicks Blackson Thomasville High School Class of 1940

Please let us know what ancestors that your researching in the area? Also we want to thank you for all the transcriptions that you have placed online lately. We do apprectiate having information about our direct Ancestors online and the more that is there the better for all of us. As for the books in public domain I think that those are the ones you have placed online. The other books that I know of are still under copyright. Perhaps June or someone else on the list might be able to tell you any published work where the author did not renew the copyrights. June do you know of any works that are available that are not under copyrights? The LDS does have some material which was microfilmed but the homestead records are online which I transcribed some years ago and Edd Dorminey transcribed many records and they are online at Edds Website. Zaroga Goff who hosts the Georgia GenWeb Turner County site has been placing some Irwin County marriages online that pertain to Irwin residents who lived in the portion of the county that became Turner County. I will be scanning some Amnesty Oaths later this week to place online. Due to my mother in law being in the hospital again this past week and over the weekend that was delayed, but I will get to it this week. You might check with the LDS to see what has been microfilmed. Louie Harper and I are trying to find out about a transportion service that someone mentioned that was on a track, like a trolley in Irwin. Now this is news to all of us and I have been doing some research on it and would appreciate any information on any type of service such as that which existed before the railroad came into the area. From what I have found so far there was a type of trackless steam driven trolley that was used in the early years. I found some images of those vehicles. But we are hoping someone will find something in a state record which will provide information about a service like that used in Irwin County. For those of you who are new to the list including Joy, we have some people on our list that live in the area. I was born in the area and reared in the area until I was about nine years old and then spent all summers and many other vacations in the area. There are many people on this list who are counsins many times over as the people in the South Central portion of Georgia moved into the area from VA, NC, and SC together in small clusters of family groups from other areas. If you have questions about the history of the county, the people let us know and we will try to answer your questions. Many of these families were allied by marriage and by bloodlines long before coming into Georgia. Irwin County residents and Ben Hill County residents are very closely allied through these unions and many of the descendants are on this list. Our Harper's, Fletcher's,Paulk's, Luke's, Tomberlin's, Land's, Sumner's, Troup's, Brown's, Rodgers', Tucker's, Turner's, Horton's, Hendley's, Bass's intermarried many times over. Most families were very large and it was very difficult to live in the area and not be marrying a cousin twice removed and sometimes there are cases of first cousins being married. So most of us on this list are cousins several times over. Not just through one line but from several or more. Our lines sometimes go back to SC or the NC and VA and were allied families prior to coming to the area that became Georgia. Most of the mail list members have been with the list since I first created it when Rootsweb offered us the mail list to use for States and Counties. We are a family group and we welcome newcomers to the list. So if you need information on any of your ancestors do post a query and someone will be happy to look up the information for you. So we don't confuse any of the new members to the list or anyone who has been unsubbed during the past couple of months and came back from vacations, there is now a Georgia GenWeb Project and also a GAGenWeb Project. The original Irwin County Webpage that at one time was affliated with the GAGenWeb Project which is hosted by Gloria Holback, June Harper and Louie Harper is now with the Georgia GenWeb Project. There is also a Ben Hill and Irwin County list located in AHGP but believe those are both up for adoption in the event anyone is interested in adopting a Georgia County. The url for the original Irwin County page that I have hosted since 1996 still on comcast. This will let you all know that the original Irwin County pages are still online and we are still adding to the pages. All of the volunteers that you have had help you through the years are still here on the mail list and if you need questions answered about your ancestors don't hesitate to ask them for help. June, and Louie both live in the area and there are many of us who were born in the area who have resources also and can heip you with your questions about your Irwin County ancestors. Most of us have a personal knowledge of the area, the people and the pioneers of the county. I am in the process of building county pages that have been set up with the new Georgia GenWeb Project for those Counties that need County Coordinators. We do need county coordinators for Crisp County, Berrien County, Wheeler, Dougherty, Tift and several others. We are hoping to get County Coordinators who either live in the areas or they have direct ancestors who lived in those counties and the new County Coordinators have something to offer in the way of knowledge about those areas, the people and the pioneers and history of each of those counties. Each of those counties has close ties with Irwin County Pioneers as many of the children, and siblings of Irwin County populated those counties named above. Many of the Surnames are the same as those found in other parts of South Central Georgia. Most of us have ties to these counties and also to Pulaski, Dodge, Telfair and Dooly as many of our ancestors were first in Pulaski before coming into Irwin county. I have been adding data to each of those counties about those families who have ties to Irwin County and the family information crosses counties. For those of you searching for ancestors who are buried in Ben Hill or Irwin June Harper has surveyed the Irwin County Cemeteries and we have that data online. Also many of the Ben Hill County Cemeteries. As many of you know that Irwin County was the Parent County to Ben Hill County and many of our ancestors lived in that portion of the county before it became Ben Hill County, the Wilcox, Luke, Barrentine, Land, Tomberlin, Young, Troup and many more surnames are found in that area before the land lotteries. Those people were "squatters" and because they had lived on the land the land became theirs before the lottery and they were the Original Irwin County property owners before the land lotteries. My own John Willcox owned and operated pole boats which took the people from one side of the Ockmulgee to the other. Crisp community which was located very near the river and Bowen's Mill was the center of that first settlement in Indian Territory which later became Irwin County and even later was cut out to form parts of Ben Hill County. Steam boats went up and down the Ockmulgee. Be sure to visit Julian William's site "Old Jacksonville" to learn about our Ancestors who settled in Telfair, Laurens, Wilkinson and Pulaski before coming into Irwin County. Julian's site has some wonderful photos of our Ancestors and so many stories about the part that our Ancestors played in building South Central Georgia. Irwin has a special meaning to me for I was born in Irwin and love the county and the people. My Mother and her siblings were born in Ben Hill County and her Parents were reared in Irwin and Ben Hill Counties. There are some cases where my Mother recalls many of the early families and can tell me about them from her own first hand experiences of growing up in the area. And then June knows the area better than anyone that I know as she has been a lifelong resident of Irwin County. Anyone growing up in Irwin or Ben Hill know that the counties are adjoining and that many of us never thought much about county boundaries when we were growing up. More like Ocilla, Fitzgerald, and the places we went to like Lake Bea, Bowen's Mill, Crystal Lake, and even Ottsiwitchee Springs which is over in Turner County but at one time was part of Irwin County. We thought only of the names and not as the places being part of any one county, just being a part of "home." For home to us was South Central Georgia and the adjoining counties were just an extention of our own town or communities. Growing up in a small town or small community in that area was a gift as life was really good. Jim Rodgers has written several narratives about what it was like and his narratives are on the Irwin County Georgia GenWeb pages along with photos of early pioneers who are his direct ancestors. June wrote a wonderful narrative or growing up in Pinetta. And if any of you who grew up in the area want to share your memories with others please do send them to us. When my Mother was a girl in the early 1920s the church's in the area had all day sings and the young people would go on hay rides to the place where they would hold the all day "Sings." Eddie Bell was the person who usually organized those for the young people. Mother said they did not have any problem with the young people as they had people like Eddie Bell who cared enough about them to organize events to keep them busy and teach them at the same time. This is a good time to by the way for everyone on the list to do a roll call and post your own Ancestor's names. Be sure to put the first names or your direct ancestors if possible so others will know who it is that your researching. 3. Joy, many of our lines came out of Colonial VA in the earliest years. There are some excellent sites online where our Fletcher cousins have placed data online about William's line going all the way back to Colonial VA. I will get the links and post on the list. The Irwin County newspapers have already been transcribed by one of my cousins but the book is still under copyrights however, he may give me permission to post some of the transcriptions online and I will be calling him to get his permission to do that. Believe that in the Salt list that my Rountree ancestors were going down into Florida to get salt. Forget where I saw it but believe I have it in one of the books that is still under copyright. There are a lot of good books which have been written about our families but many were published in the 1980s forward. Many of us have these books but we cannot violate copyrights by posting the material in these books. However, we are happy to do lookups and help in every way that we can without violating the authors copyrights. I just gathered some of the information that is available for Irwin County researchers that might be of some help. Go to the Wilcox County Georgia GenWeb Site and see if Janet Moore has anything on her site that might be of help to you. I looked in the books that I have on hand and found no listed for James' gravesite. Wish I could have been of more help. But do check the adjoining counties to see if he is buried in one of them. Since Murdock is buried in Wilcox I think that is the best place to look first. Kind Regards, Gloria

    1. Re: [GAIRWIN] Updates On Irwin Research

    3. Welcome Joy, nice to have you join us.
