I completed the transcriptions of the Fitzgerald Enterprise up to end of Dec. 1900. In fact I have been working on the index so hard copies can be printed out and sent to the library in Fitzgerald. Those copies will have an everyname index in each of them. Also I have started on the transcriptions for the years 1901 through Dec. 1903. Later this week I will get the remainder of the 200 pages loaded to the website. When pages were counted there was 200 that I have done to date of the 1897 to 1901. This film reel is only half done, lots more to go. And I thought I could do this all in one month...ha, ha, big HAH! No way, not unless I just get the obits, marriages, births and leave everything thing else, and I just can't ignore, who moved to town, moved away, took a new job, graduated from college, the joys and the tragedies that occured through those years and the new buildings that went up, businesses that opened and all of the day to day happenings that tells the stories of our ancestors lives and how they interacted with their family and neighbors. Hope you all will approve that we to know those things that are sometimes ignored. In the spring of 1865, he murdered Mr. Jack Walker, who was a justice of the peace. Mr. Walker was searching for a runaway slave and Mr. Bone was allowing the slave to hide out on his property. The story of the event is in the Irwin County History Book as well as in the Tifton Gazette in 1930.
When I was a child the pavillion was still standing, in the early to mid 1940s. The beach/shoreline was clear of anything other than the beautiful white sand a crystal clear water. Time changes everything. Sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse. Many generations of children and young adults have spent joyous hours of sun and play at Crystal Lake. The other popular places was Eli Vickers, Lake Beatrice "Lake Bea" and Bowen's Mill. Each had swimming pools for adults and children, dancing to the juke box, Lake Bea had duck pin bowling, skating at one time it seems in my memory, a snack bar, and people fished on the lake. Also, the end of the lake farthest from the pavilion was said to be very deep. Some Navy divers supposedly went down and found several holes (caves) off the sink home on that end. In the late 70's I went back there. It had a waterpark beside the lake with waterslides, etc. Haven't even thought about it for a long time. Hi, There is a very interesting article in the newspaper for June or July 1900 about the Federal Census and lots of great information about the enumerators job, how it was all done. Down side is some enumerators were not honest and were taking names from tombstones, obituaries and other sources to add to the census. Why? Well I will soon be transcribing that section of the Fitzgerald Enterprise and will put the entire articles (there were several) online. Each enumerator in Irwin County and some other GA counties had about 2000 residences to visit. Maps, and other helpful aides were provided to the enumerators. I found it interesting that the enumerators did lie and falsify records, so we all need to keep that in mind in the event we find something that we know "can't" be, such as a dead relative showing up two years later on a census schedule. Hopefully, that was something that did not happen often and I personally have never ran into that problem in about twenty years of research. Some missing, but never there when they shouldn't be. By using the census, newspapers and the histories written about a county one can now trace their ancestors movements even during the 1880s to 1900 during that period when the 1890 would have helped. Be sure to check the Georgia newspapers for all counties as they all clipped articles from other papers and published some of them in their local papers. You will find articles about Ben Hill and Irwin County residents in the Coffee, Dooly, Colquitt, Dodge, Telfair, Wilcox and other neighboring counties papers. So don't ignore that great source of information. When it was a murder trial or an accidental death it sometimes made the Atlanta papers as well as local papers. Sometimes you will find a lot of information about Georgians in the Alabama and Florida newspapers too. Just some helpful hints to where you might find that one bit of information that will help you with your brick walls. Be sure to take a look at the latest newspaper uploads for March 1900 through April, May, June http://home.comcast.net/~gholback/1897__1903.htm http://home.comcast.net/~gholback/1900_jan_march.htm http://home.comcast.net/~gholback/1900_april_july.htm new Jeff Davis Park, Jefferson Davis page http://home.comcast.net/~gholback/hist_jdp.htm have a great evening. Hi, tonight I will get the latest transcriptions loaded to the Ben Hill County site. These transcriptions are from 1900 and Fitzgerald was part of Irwin County at the time. Ben Hill County was not created until 1906 so these papers pertain to not only residents in Fitzgerald but to Irwin, Coffee, Colquitt, Berrien, Dooly, Wilcox, and a few other counties. With over 100 pages of transcriptions I am barely into this film. There is still over 3/4 roll left to transcribe. I am trying not to leave anything that is helpful in providing clues to where your ancestors may have came from, went to, worked, attended schools, married, when they were born, died, played an instrument, fell out of a buggy, and sometimes were murdered or murdered someone else. These transcriptions have a bit of everything mentioned above and more. Let me know if you find one of your own ancestors among those mentioned in these transcriptions as it feels good to know that someone has benefitted by the material. The rivaly between the editor of Fitzgerald's newspaper and the editor of the Ocilla newspaper continues. Mr. Mercer in Fitzgerald and Mr. Hanlon in Ocilla continue their sparring with words. Hope you enjoy the latest transcriptions. Gloria "What good is knowledge if not shared?" --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? vote.yahoo.com - Register online to vote today!

We were lucky again! Thanks to last minute re boarding all of the windows and parking cars in front of the garabe door to break some of the wind damage. Now I and most of the people living in Florida are suffering from hurricane fatigue. We board the windows, then remove the boards. Thinking that Jeanne would go up the coast we waited till about 1:00 to put some of the boards we had removed from windows and doors back up. But it didn't miss us and came across the state as you all know. Some folks lost their roofs and had lots of water damage, flooding are now without power in many areas. It is like camping out in your own home. So sorry for those who got the brunt again from a hurricane. Sorry for you folks up in AL, LA, MS, NC,SC, and GA and all areas too who have suffered this year from these unwelcome visitors to our states. Pardon any of us who are delayed in getting back to anyone asking for lookups. It will take us a few days to get back to genealogy mode from hurricane mode. John and I in Sarasota Florida which is along the coastline (Gulf of Mexico), and Florida is not a very wide state and again this hurricane crossed the state and came right down on top of our county as well as those north of us with winds up to (maybe above) 75 miles per hour (for what seemed like hours). We lost a tree in our back yard, lots of limbs down and debri all over the yard from neighbors trees. My mother has been without power for going on three days (her entire neigborhood without power). We only lost power for a few hours during that first night as our power lines are buried under ground and no power lines above ground in our neighborhood which I think does help during these hurricane seasons. The tree that we lost went right in between our neigbors screened pool enclosure and ours missing both. All night we heard loud "thuds" hitting and bouncing across the our roof. Limbs, avacados (neighbors trees) and other air borne debri pelting the neigborhood. Some of our friends came and stayed over night as their home lost part of it's roof during the last hurricane and isn't yet repaired. Lots of folks again lost everything they owned. One couple in Western Hillsborough county burned their home during the hurricane by placing a cardboard box on the stove and the box accidently brushed against the power switch and caught the kitchen on fire, they lost their family dog in the fire. Again some auto accidents claimed lives with people out driving in the high winds. Be sure to check out Zaroga Goff's Turner County site as she has added some more newspaper transcriptions to her site. Within a day or two I will feel like transcribing again. For now I am just getting the house back in order. Everything on the porch comes in and everything outside is moved to the garages during these hurricanes. So now got to get it out of the house and garage and back where it all goes. By the way I received my DNA test kit last weekend and will be doing the test which tells me what geographical area all of my ancestors came from. Now I will find the real truth of my ancestors through their DNA trail...back to where they came from. It is a very simple test and just includes two swabs to swab inside the mouth on the right and left inner cheeks. Send it off and learn who you descend from.
