Two children are listed, along with 2 or 3 of Sarah Jane's brothers. She petitioned the court for custody of minor children after the death of her father and mother Needham Arnold and I think the mother's name was Mary Woodard. I have nothing more than this and part of this info came from a relative. I think there is no doubt this is the same family listed in the 1880 census, names are the same for family members.

It was a really wonderful place. I would love to have a copy of your photos of the lake and building. What a memory that will bring back for both my Mother and I. There is one in my own family collection that is of my Mother and I in the water. But it doesn't show anything but us in the water. I must have been about 15 months old at the time. I host an Irwin County webpage and would love to post that photo on the page so others can see what we saw as children. Many thanks for sharing the information with us, Gloria

There ws a big wooden pavillian when my grandfather owned the lake. It had a skating rink, bowling alleys, and dance floor. They sold beer, rented out cabins, even rented bathing suits for swimmers. The original building burned. I actually have pictures (somewhere) of the water up to the back steps. Fishing was also popular there back in those days and you could rent boats to fish. Sometime in the early 60's the original spring that fed the lake caved in or something and they began feeding the lake through wells the water was pumped in from the pipes that held the diving boards. (that was when Adcock and Morris owned the lake.

At that time, my mother and her sister bought out Jehu Fletcher's part of the Lake. They sold it I believe in 1953 or 54. Adcock and Morris were the last owners, but that is not who my family sold it to. It is my understanding that Adcock and Morris sold out because it became to expensive to insure for liaibility.

Thinking back to when I was about four years old and we went there one afternoon, the lake was all the way up to the mid steps, completely covered the sandy beach. Guess there had been some heavy rains during that time. Must have been about 1945/46. Even in the 1960s the beach area was pretty. The sand was a fine sand as I recall. But anyone correct me on this if I am wrong about the fine sand and the details about the snack bar, dance floor, and think there was a duck pin alley? Could be though only Lake Beatrice had the duck pin alley. Anyone else have any memories of Crystal Lake? Gloria

When I was a young child my Mother took me there many times and I have photos of she and I in the water. As I recall the water was crystal clear and the lake water was not too cold. Believe it was a spring fed lake and it had a very deep bottom. Some claimed that if you swam across it you would drown and never make it to the other side. There were a lot of old wives tales about the lake. Gloria
