What a terrible tragedy. Fussell, Wiley August 1901 Carla Miles transcribed this: The Marion County Patriot, August 16, 1901 The Marion County Patriot, No. 32 August 16, 1901 Page One Dr. Fussell Murdered Irwin County the Scene of a Cold-blooded Homicide Fitzgerald, Ga., Aug. 14 – One of the most cold blooded murders in the history of Irwin County took place about 10 miles east of Fitzgerald, in which Dr. Wiley Fussell, one of the best known men in the county, was shot and killed by a white man by the name of Brantly, who met him in the public road and told him that he was there to kill him, and immediately put a double-barrel shotgun to his shoulder and blazed away, the shot taking effect in the doctor’s head. He died instantly. After the killing Brantly got in his buggy and drove off, and is supposed to be hiding in the big cypress swamps on the Omulgee river. It is reported the trouble is of two years standing, when it is said Dr. Fussell won the wife of Brantley’s brother. More trouble is looked for, as Fussell is well connected.

Surnames: Luke, Rhoades, Rhodes, Grantham Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Tc.2ADI/812.1.2.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Nacy, I'm a great great granddaughter of William and Sarah Luke and g grandniece of Rutha Luke but unfortunately I don't have anything to offer other than what is published in Phil Luke's book. There hasn't been any indepth research done on the William and Sarah Luke line. This would take someone getting into all of the early Irwin County, Wilkinson County records to learn more about William and Sarah's life. To date no one knows the names of William's parents only that he came into Irwin County from Wilkinson County and may have been in Columbia County prior to that. Some believe that William, Daniel, and John Luke (all early pioneers of Irwin County) were brothers. This is a good asumption but not a proven fact. They could have been cousins. But I have little doubt in my mind that they were related by blood. The only way to learn for certain how the Luke families of Ben Hill and Irwin County are connected is to have DNA tests made for men from each family group (William, Daniel and John). As for Rutha Luke, she was said to have married a Luke cousin but I don't know if that was the case or if so who he was. Wish I had more to offer. My father was close friends throughout his life with members of the Grantham family as I am also. Kind Regards, Gloria

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Tc.2ADI/812.1.1 Message Board Post: June... how good of you to look this information up. I disagree that Rutha's little girl Sarah (b 1878) died at 2 yrs of age. She appears in the 1900 Irwin Co census with her mother (who was listed as Seavy Ann instead of Rutha, don't understand that), her sister Juda (b Mar 1874) and Julia's 2 children (Julia A. and Cornealius F.) ... plus Sarah's child Rutha M.(aggie). Sarah married in 1903 to Joe GRANTHAM, and in the 1910 Irwin census she must be deceased because Joe Grantham is listed with Maggie and and others in the household. Wonder where Mr. Paulk got his information. I look forward to hearing from you again. Many thanks.
