    3. I am looking for information in regard to my Fifth Great Grandfather Burrell Henry Bailey & his family. 3. Becky, I would love to have family group sheets for your Bradford and allied lines so that they can be placed in files in the Fitzgerald Library once we have the file cabinet set up to house all the Pioneer families. In fact I am hoping that the County/City will o.k. and go forward with "Genealogical/Historical/Heritage Society for the area so that we all have a place to send our original documents so that they are preserved for all time. At present there is a museum in Fitzgerald but that is more for the Civil war and the City and not the County and they are not taking in additional artifacts. Perhaps a group of us online researchers can share research and encourage the County/City to publish our findings in a County history book. When I was a teenager I dated a Robert Bradford from Mystic/Irwinville. He would have been born about 1939-44. He had at least two brothers. I forget their names. All of those boys were very nice young men and believe they remained in the area though I am not sure of that since I was only visiting my Grandparents that year when Robert and I dated a few times. Believe he married a Betty Jean Padgette and his older brother married a Miss. Mendel/Mendal. 1. How and Who Will Publish The History Of Ben Hill County
    2. Gloria Holback
    3. We can ask the County, City and County and City Organizations to be involved in this project. We can request these groups to create a committee and hope that one of these local groups will assist us and work with us in getting this book published. If no interest there we can contact one of several groups in Georgia who offer grants and will publish the book. I have a package sent to me by one publishing companies that includes a sample book (this will be donated to the Ben Hill County Library after interested parties view the book or it can be placed on display at the local library in Fitzgerald so folks can view the book binding, contents and layout of this one example. There is already one on display in the library in Fitzgerald that I donated to the library in December by this same publisher. The books are beautiful and the publisher offers someone to assist us from beginning stages to the publishing and advertizing stages. This book would be a nine by twelve inch book, hard bound in a black cover with a metal gloss County Seal. The publisher provides 4,000 promotional brouchures to help presale books. We need folks to proof read the family groups/articles/stories submitted and a committee would need to be set up to receive the submissions of articles and photos. This is too large of a project for a small group to coordinate. We would be allowed 512 pages, the text would be black throughout the book. We would be allowed to include 1,200 photos. Tips for writing: Double space with one inch margins. Stories of 350 or less are free to the submitter, with ten cents per word over that amount. One photograph will be printed free for each story and additional photographs would be $10.00 each. Photos would need to r studio quality, glossy and clear with sharp contrast. Names should be in full and married women include m,aiden names such as Ann (Jones) Smith. Write in the third person, usinbg peoples names, they, he, she and not in the first person. Do not write anything that is embarrassing, or offensive. The use of good well thought out humor is fine. Tell when, why and how your family came to the area. Include honors, communtiy involvement and family traditions. There will be sections for military and memorial pages. Now, I'd love to hear ideas and suggestions from each of you who are willing and able to help with this project. Please pass the word along to family and friends who are not on the world wide web and don't own computers who might be interested in submitting their family history articles. For those of you who live near or in Ben Hill County please tell other residents about this project. Let's do this in 2006, the Centennial of Fitzgerald, Georgia. 1. Writing A History Of Ben Hill County
    2. Gloria Holback
    3. The history of Ben Hill County is too complex for any one person to write and have the piece of work tell the true story of the County from all points of view. I know, for I have compiled a huge website during the past nine plus years that tells only a portion of the story of Ben Hill County and the people who played a role in the history of the county. Every family whoulived in that county played a role in one way or another and those families should be included in any accurate history. Just this and last month I have spent many hours transcribing the information found on the World War One Draft Cards of Ben Hill County residents. This took over ten hours per day out of my week/s. Not an easy undertaking to say the least. In addition to that in my "spare" time I am continuing my on going transcription of the early Ben Hill County newspapers and I am anxiously waiting some microfilm copies that I ordered a month ago from South Dakota of images of early newspapers so that I can also transcribe those which pertain to several Ben Hill County families. A history of Ben Hill County needs to include the Southern and the Northern points of view during the early creation of Fitzgerald and a truthful and honest dipiction of what adjustments had to be made by the residents of that area of Georgia who were Confederate veterans who found their homeland being "invaded" by Northern veterans. And yes, there were some hard feelings and all was not smooth in the beginning. Reporting history is only done right when it is reported honestly and as it is found in the records and through family traditions by those who lived during their ancestors lifetime. Let's do this right and lets do this together as a group and get our own allied family members involved in this huge project. But by all means lets do it now and not wait till our interest has wained. Money isn't my goal. Telling the story of our home and of our Ancestors is my goal. I will do my work on this project and hope others are willing to work with me on this. I'm a telephone call or an email away when someone needs some guidance on how or where to find records. We have others who are knowledgeble and willing to help. So what are we waiting for? 3. What is June's Husband's Name? I will put him on our prayer list at church. -----Original Message----- From: Gloria Holback [mailto:gholback_1999@yahoo.com] Sent: Monday, January 09, 2006 6:30 PM To: GAIRWIN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [GAIRWIN] 2006 Members Roll Call Hi, hope everyone had a wonderful Holiday Season and we are all going to have a healthy and happy new year. Do join me in saying prayers for June Harper and her husband who is very seriously ill. June has been with the Ben Hill and Irwin County Mail List since each were first created and has always been there for everyone who needed lookups and information. We love you June. We have a few new members who have joined the older ones who have been with the list since the beginning. Please reply direct to introduce yourself and let others know what surnames that your researching so we can all get acquainted with our newest members. I was in Ben Hill and Irwin County in December and had a wonderful time giving a genealogy seminar in Fitzgerald and a presentation at the museum. Each had a wonderful turn out and we had a great time at both events. During my stay in Georgia I was on two talk television shows promoting genealogy and Fitzgerald's museum and library. As some of you know Fitzgerald is my home town and I was born in Irwin County which is about only about fifteen minutes from downtown Fitzgerald. My ancestors were some of the first settlers in each of those counties and most of us on the Ben Hill and Irwin County mail lists are related through at least one or more lines. Some of us are working on establishing a Genealogical and Historical Society in Fitzgerald that would house a research library and repository for old documents and family papers. This Society would cover both counties in fact would cover that part of Georgia since so many of the early settlers had ties to Telfair, Dodge, Dooly, Pulaski, Wilcox, Berrien and Coffee Counties. During the past year I donated three boxes of genealogy books and two boxes of fiche to the Library to be added to the genealogy room. At present the materials are being cataloged into the library. If anyone has any genealogy books, films, fiche that you would want to donate in memory of a family or family member don't hesitate to do it in your lifetime and not wait. Make sure that your family documents and heirlooms don't end up in a thrift shop of even worse in a garbage can someday. That does happen all too often and I personally felt that my Great Grandparents and Grandparents would want the Museum in Fitzgerald to have the Railroad Documents, Employee's Rule Book, Some china, Early Newspaper's Employee's belongings, and other items that has a provenance with the City of Fitzgerald. There are some historic buildings in the area that are being considered for a location. As soon as I have more information about the project I'll announce it on this list so that everyone will know what news is coming. Fitzgerald is a great location for a genealogical and historical research facility. For those of you who are in Georgia I hope to see you this spring when I make another trip up that way. As soon as I know the dates I'll let you know so we can arrange a get together. In the meantime have a great New Year. Reverend Wilson Conner and John Willcox were two of my ancestors who had ties to the history of Irwin County and other surrounding counties. 3. I am so sorry to hear about June's husband. I have been off internet for several weeks with computer problems so I hadn't heard. I sure will remember him. June has been so much help to me ever since I start researching. Hope he will soon be better. My name is Shirley McMillan Durden and the names that I am researching are mostly in Irwin, Coffee, Berrien and Atkinson Counties. McMillan, Vickers, Harper, Paulk, Purvis, Tucker, McDonald, Sumner, Henderson, Smith, Yates, Young, Mettitt, Marshall, Luke, Jernigan, Graves, O'Neal, Jowers, Trowell, Ricketson, Sears and several others. If I can be help to anyone I would be glad to do whatever I could. I live in Berrien Co., GA. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gloria Holback" <gholback_1999@yahoo.com> To: <GAIRWIN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, January 09, 2006 6:30 PM Subject: [GAIRWIN] 2006 Members Roll Call > Hi, hope everyone had a wonderful Holiday Season and > we are all going to have a healthy and happy new year. > > > Do join me in saying prayers for June Harper and her > husband who is very seriously ill.
