By the way, my mother's name was Athleen Lewis and her sisters were Maudine and Doris. I actually still live in the old Leon Lewis homeplace (that he built in the 1920s) in Irwinville. I am glad someone is interested in the history. Mandy

I have some fond memories of going there as a child with my family. In fact I have a photo of me playing in the beautiful white sand on the shore with my mother when I was less than a year old. I host the Ben Hill County, Georgia GenWeb site and would love to set up a page for the Crystal Lake site on either the Irwin or Ben Hill pages. Gloria

The other half was owned by Jehu Fletcher. My mother and one sister also bought out Mr. Fletcher's shares. They sold the property sometime before my birth in 1954. I have many old photos of the wooden pavilion and have heard many stories through the years. Yes there were bowling or duck pin alleys, a dance floor and roller skating in the pavilion back in the day. My daughter worked their as a teenager just before it closed to the public. She was told that insurance became too high to keep the park open. Mandy Bryant

It was taken around 1949 or 50. I have another family photo taken from almost the same vantage point five years earlier....can barely make out the framework of a building. I wondered if it was going up or going down at that time. BTW, would like to visit your site but can't find the url.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Tc.2ADI/835.2.1 Message Board Post: Dayna, I worked hard over the last week to form my own views on the Goff line. I am new to this line. I am coming at it as a known descendent of Samuel Goff who married Eliza Hunter on 30 November 1839. One of Samuel Goff's youngest children, Martha (born about 1859) married George Washington Conger 25 February 1874, in Irwin County, Georgia. What I have compiled from census records makes good sense to me, however it remains circumstancial evidense. There are rumors of the Samuel and WIlliam (of the 1820 census) being the children of a Dempsey Goff who served in the Rev War in North Carolina. The unusual names, Dempsy and Tabitha, showing showing up in later generations suggest very strong ties. Again please let me know your thoughts, mine are below: Goff Thoughts: Note that the various census recorders spelled Goff in many ways: Goff, Gaff, and Gaugh. However, the names and ages of the children provide clear continuity through the decades. 1820 US Census; Emanuel County, Georgia · two entries, one following immediately after the other, on page 82 William Goff: 1 free white male, 26 – 45 years old 1 free white female, 26 – 45 years old Samuel Goff: 1 free white male, 26 – 45 years old 1 free white female, 16 – 25 years old 2 free white males, < 10 years old 2 free white females, < 10 years old I think: This William and Samuel, each married and a head of household, with 1820 census entries right next to each other are most likely brothers; but possibly cousins. __________________________________________________________________ 1830 US Census; Lowndes County, Georgia William Goff: 1 free white male, 30 – 39 years old 1 free white male, 70 – 79 years old (father – in – law ?) 2 free white male, < 5 years old 1 free white female, 30 - 39 years old 1 free white female, 20 - 29 years old 2 free white female, 5 - 9 years old 1830 US Census; Irwin County, Georgia Samuel Goff: 1 free white male, 40 – 49 years old 1 free white female, 30 – 39 years old 2 free white males, 10 – 14 years old 1 free white males, 5 – 9 years old 1 free white males, < 5 years old 2 free white females, 10 - 14 years old 2 free white females, 15 - 19 years old 1 free white females, < 5 years old I think: The 2 male children 10 – 14 years old are William & James Goff. The male child 5 – 9 years old is Samuel Goff. ___________________________________________________________________ 1840 US Census; Irwin County, Georgia · two entries on the same page, separated by 7 entries Samuel Gaff: 1 free white male, 15 – 19 years old (Married Eliza Hunter, 30 Nov., 1839) 1 free white female, 15 - 19 years old William Gaff: 1 free white male, 20 – 29 years old (Married Elizabeth Hunter, 24 Aug., 1837) 1 free white female, 20 – 29 years old 1 free white male, < 5 years old 1 free white female, < 5 years old 1840 US Census; Dooley County, Georgia James Gaff: 1 free white male, 20 – 29 years old (Married Eliza Woodward) 1 free white female, 15 – 19 years old 1 free white female, 40 – 49 years old (mother-in-law ?) I think: This Samuel, William and James are brothers (they live in very close proximity), and are the sons of either the William or Samuel from the 1820 census. However, 20 years have passed since the 1820 census, and only Samuel had children in 1820, and therefore only Samuel’s children could be 20+ years old in 1840. Samuel had two males under 10 years old in his household in 1820; probably William (born 1816) and James (born 1819); Samuel was not born until 1821. ___________________________________________________________________ 1850 US Census; Irwin County, Georgia William Gaff: age 34 Male farming Georgia Elizabeth age 28 F Penelope age 11 F Susanah age 10 F Nancy age 7 F Martha age 5 F Larkin age 3 M William age <1 M 1850 US Census; Dooley County, Georgia · two entries, one following immediately after the other, on the same page Samuel Gaff: age 29 Male farmer Georgia Elizer age 26 F Elisha age 6 M Thomas age 4 M Mary J. age 3 F John age 1 M James S. William’s oldest daughter is named Penelope, which was the name of his supposed mother-in-law, Penelope Cox who married Elijah Hunter. James was the most likely to use family names; his first two boys are named after his father & brother (Samuel) and his uncle & brother (William). Tabitha is am unusual name as well, but it was his mother’s. James’ youngest and last son (Dempsey, born 1866; see 1870 census) was named after a rumored grandfather. Dempsey is a very uncommon as a given name. ___________________________________________________________________ 1870 US Census; Irwin County, Georgia Eliza Goff: age 50 F Keeping House Georgia (Samuel’s wife) Rutha age 16 M Sarah age 14 F Martha age 10 F Nancy age 9 F 1870 US Census; Worth County, Georgia James Gaugh: age 51 Male farm laborer Georgia Eliza age 48 F Sarah age 16 F Delila age 14 F James age 11 M Eliza age 8 F Elvinia age 6 F Dempsey age 4 M Note: Samuel died between the 1860 and 1870 census. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Tc.2ADI/71.128.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Dayna, Thank you for your reply. I am greatly confused. I have been working with reports that Samuel Goff (born c. 1821) who married Eliza Hunter (on 30 November 1839 in Irwin County, Georgia) was the brother of William Goff who was to have married Elizabeth Hunter (the sister of Eliza Hunter). Both brothers were supposed to have been the sons of James Goff (born 1782 in North Carolina and moved with most of his family to Mississippi, including William Goff). I have the 1850 Mississippi census for the James Goff that I was thinking of, showing a son named William (age 21, meaning he was born about 1829). William was supposed to have married Elizabetrh Hunter on 24 August 1837. He would have been nine years old. Conclusion, The William in Mississippi must not be the William Goff that married Elizabeth Hunter in 1837. I found the census record for your William in Georgia. He is much more likely to be the William that I am trying to find. Do you have any evidence of the parentage of your William Goff. Do you have any evidence that he had a brother or cousin named Samuel Goff. My Samuel Goff (and his wife Eliza) is found in the 1840 Irwin Co., Ga.; 1850 Dooley Co., Ga.; 1860 Liberty Co., Fl.; and 1870 Irwin Co., Ga. census'. I would love to confirm the links between these supposed relatives. Thanks again for any help.
