Me and two fishing and hunting buddies camped, hunted squirrels, fished, explored, and had a whale of a good time. There was always a bit of mystery about the place, and that intrigued us. I remember that we camped there once in very cold weather, and the owner came to our camp and invited us to stay free in one of his cabins which had a stove. We were very grateful for his generosity, as we were almost frozen by that time. We caught a lot of nice bass and bream in the lake, and visited another nearby lime sink lake that was very small. I recall its name as "Opal Lake," or at least that's what we called it. There was also a spooky swamp lake back in the woods named "Devil's Den," but if it had fish in it we never caught them. Our last haunt was an old fishing cabin on the Alapaha River way back in the woods, where we camped a time or two. We heard all kind of stories about peopl! e drowning in Crystal Lake, and one story even had a Navy diver coming there to search for a body. If there's anyone living who knows the full story about this lake, I would sure like to read it, and see the pictures Mandy and Gloria mentioned earlier in this thread. I'm attaching an aerial picture of the lake someone sent me not long ago - a sad sight for a lake once so beautiful. My mother has pictures of me taken in 1973 (I was 3 years old) with my dad holding me and you can see lots of little fish swimming all around. I saw it change through out the years. I can remember what seemed like hundreds and hundreds of people everywhere. I remember the challange to swim out to the wooden docks. I guess the last time I went was around 1988 when I was a senior in high school. It was a great place to go and so many memories were made. I would love to go by and visit what is left. I wonder if you can still drive back there. Does anyone know? Sheila Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. PRESS RELEASE August 9, 2009 Elmer's Genealogy Library in Madison, Florida, established by Elmer C. Spear will be merging with the Huxford Genealogical Society Library in Homerville, Georgia in 2010. The merged Library will be housed in Homerville, Georgia. This merger has already been approved by the Board of Directors of both libraries. The transfer of the contents of Elmer's Library, including over 30,000 books, nearly 4,000 rolls of microfilm, and over 10,000 sheets of mirofiche will start taking place as soon as the City of Homerville completes the renovation of the building that will house both libraries. This merger will produce a genealogical library that's more than double the size of the existing Huxford Library. The City of Homerville provides utilities as well as housing for the Huxford Genealogical Society Library and will continue to do so. Since Elmer's Genealogy Library is a 501 (c) (3) corporation, the library building on Range Avenue in Madison will also be donated to the Huxford Genealogical Society. This decision to merge Elmer's Library with the Huxford Library was made to ensure the survival of Elmer's Genealogy Library into the future. If you are a genealogist, you will really enjoy this new combination library. After the merger, the new library will be the finest private genealogical library in the southeastern United States. There are two Bed and Breakfast establishments in Homerville and this small Georgia town, located between Waycross and Valdosta on US Hwy. 84, welcomes genealogists with open arms. Genealogy draws a lot of out-of-town visitors to this small town which really appreciates it. Homerville is easily reached from both I-10 and I-75. See Map. Elmer's Genealogy Library members will be extended an invitation to transfer their membership to the new and larger library. The new library will be named the Folks Huxford and Elmer Spear Genealogical Library. This new library will be managed by the Huxford Genealogical Society. Crystal Lake and Lake B was the place to go, it is a shame that the kids that grew up going to these places no longer have a place they can take their grand kids or kids to show their old stomping grounds What is life? It is the flash of a firefly in the night. It is the breath of a buffalo in the wintertime. It is the little shadow which runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset. - Blackfoot --- On Sun, 8/9/09, gc-gateway@rootsweb.com <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> wrot From: gc-gateway@rootsweb.com <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> Subject: Re: [GAIRWIN] cystal lake/crystal beach waterpark To: GAIRWIN-L@rootsweb.com Date: Sunday, August 9, 2009, 7:29 PM This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list.
