According to Civil War Historian, Bruce Catton, Major General Daniel Butterfield, of the Union Army of the Potomac had a fascination with bugles and was one of the first commanders to make up bugle calls that were unique to his own troops. He could thus use the bugler during battle to signal his troops only. According to Catton, Butterfield called his bugler to him one day and said that he wanted to compose a tune that would tell his troops that it was "Lights Out" time. He said that he wanted a sound that would make anyone who heard it picture the army bedding down under a peaceful moon. He sat and hummed sounds for a long time until he and the bugler got it the way he wanted it.
